  • Monkey Island 2 LeChuck’s Revenge - The Secret of Monkey Island was one of the greatest adventure games ever made, a masterpiece with few peers. And yet, somehow, the sequel managed to stand on its own and prove that there was more to this series than a one joke, one trick, one headed monkey.

Best line: "I'LL be back! I'll BE back! I'll be BACK!" :^D
A worthy successor that I enjoyed playing back in the day ('93ish or so). But some puzzles were indeed off-kilter, and the backgrounds struck me as more "impressionistic" compared to part 1. I never checked out the later instalments, as I hate their visual style.

A few minutes ago I beat the game for the first time, so I decided to watch a review. Your video was the first review that appeared when I looked up Monkey Island 2 in the RUclips search bar. I mainly wanted to see what were other peoples thoughts on the ending of the game. Somehow the game went from being about pirates to something that belongs in the Twilight Zone.

That's Ron Gilbert wacky imagination, but I'm sure it would be explained IF he did 3. I was very disapointed when I first played Curse because... welll... they DIDN'T exlain the ending! After a few years I came back to it and liked it alot, for me its a very special game that has terrific artwork and also great puzzles, humor, music and characters, the overarching story is a just bit less interesting then the others. I hope he gets to explain the end of MI2 one day.

Miguel Baptista I know this is really late, but they kinda explained it in curse of monkey island, lechuck asks how guybrush escaped from his carnival of the damned, which is believed to refer to the carnival at the end of 2. The line is like two seconds long and they never really bring it up again lol. Also at the end of 2 Elaine says something about wondering if lechuck put a voodoo curse on him, implying that them being kids was a curse by lechuck.

@@toastedmatt9387 I remember that from playing through the third game, Curse of Monkey Island. However, I feel like it was sort of a cop out. Especially since the game is about pirates. I legitimately wonder how Ron Gilbert was going to explain what happened.

@@toastedmatt9387 It does come up again. In part 5 of Curse, they return to the Carnival of the Damned, and Lechuck turns Guybrush into a kid. There is a period of exposition during which Lechuck goes into more detail, but the player can skip most of this if they want. The only part of MI2's ending that isn't mentioned in Curse is whether Guybrush and Lechuck are brothers.

Thank you for your excellent series of reviews. I just played the Special Edition of LeChuck's Revenge. I originally played the Amiga version back in the mid-1990's. I still think 'Secret' is a more fun game, but (as you say) 'LeChuck' is more about puzzles in the traditional adventure game format. I didn't have a problem with the ending. 'Big Whoop' is clearly a ridiculous name and (after playing 'Secret' first) I wasn't expecting any real pay-off to the hunt for it. And the ending is clearly indicating there would be a follow up game. Even if that game never materialised, the ending is about the story continuing on into further adventures with Guybrush eventually escaping LeChuck/Big Whoop. One thing. Did a different writer create each of the four map piece retrieval puzzles? The puzzles related to the cook's piece are straightforward, while those to find the piece behind the waterfall are all obtuse. Why would a hole in a brick allow you to successfully get the map? Not to even mention the whole series of items and actions needed to get to that map piece.

3:30 Development of MI2 startet when the first part wasn't even released, so they had no idea how successfull Monkey Island 1 would become (or not). So I doubt this is a reference to that.
