When Marriott owned Great America in California (Ceder Fair runs it now) they had a HOT SHOPPE that only sold root beer for 5 cents.
I worked the Roy Rogers grill at Penn State. I *LOVED* football weekends. 54 burgers on the grill at any time over 2 1/2 hours (max was supposed to be 48). Plus, I was toasting my own buns. We could do that because ALL the condiments were on the lobby bar.
The only mentions of Marriott that I remember were on paychecks and in the corner of the tray papers.

Great job on this, Mike! I worked for Marriott (MHRS) for 20 years starting in 1985 and retiring in 2005. I started as a graveyard engineer and in six years worked my way up to Director of Engineering. It was a good organization to work for and it offered many and various opportunities for career growth. I knew, of course, most of the story you told, but there were a few I wasn't aware of. Again, great work as usual.

In my experience, Marriot strikes the perfect balance between high-end luxury seen at something like a Four Season’s yet priced at a range more comparable to a Holiday Inn... It's the perfect balance between opposing customer segments

It seems like the entire family had some excellent talent in business and foresight, to marry and mingle with people who elaborate and exemplify your skills, and educate your children with your interests where it actually catches, and they lead a successful career as well.
One missing part of the story you may want to explore is Marriott's merger and then spinoff (if that's the right term) of the French company Sodexo (formerly Sodexho). Essentially, Marriott gained Sodexo's real estate and Sodexo gained Marriott's institutional food service business.
You bring up a good point. When he mentioned their food service business, I was thinking that sounds like Sodexo Marriott, a name I hadn’t heard in years!
Yep. When Sodexo merged with Marriott and then our facility became a Sodexo runned facility, my time and position was continued and I still work for Sodexo now for over 30 years between the 2.
Of all the companies you've covered, it seems like Marriott's strategy for rebounding is the smartest we've ever seen. Normally, at the point where the company has acquired too much debt, some firm rolls in and snaps up the company, tears it apart, and adds even more debt before moving on.
Also Willard Marriot was close friend with George Romney who was the CEO of American Motors, and according to legend is the one who convinced Marriot that roadside hotels was a good money maker, which in 1957 led to the first Marriot Motel, which spawned the hotel chain. Romney and Marriot were close friend for years and George named his son Willard Mitt Romney after Willard Marriot. The Romney connection to Marriot is it's one whole thing as well.
The Illinois Marriott Great America park indeed got sold to Six Flags, but the California Marriott Great America park is now operated by Cedar Fair, the direct competitor to Six Flags. Both parks were originally built by Marriott, for Marriott, and not intended to be affiliated with other parks.
And Californias great America has changed hands many times the city owned it the paramount and I think someone else too for a bit
As a native Washingtonian, Marriott has always been a big deal around here. As a kid in the 80s, my mother would go to Hot Shoppes with her mom and other family every year until it closed in the late 80s/early 90s. Even now, there are SO many Marriott brand hotels in downtown D.C. and in the area it could make your head spin. Also, when I went to Drexel in '96, Sodexo Marriott had just taken over as the food services company for the cafeteria that year, and it was pretty good. I fell in love with Belgian waffles because of them.

I would always insist on going to the "not on the turnpike" Roy Rogers in the DC area because it was so nostalgic.
The 20-somethings I would travel with could never appreciate it.

I'm a native Washingtonian too! I never knew that Marriott owened Hot Shoppes! I use to eat at Hot Shoppes in Rockville and Hyattsville, MD. Good times!
Fun fact : Mitt Romney's full name is Willard Mitt Romney named after J. Willard Marriott. There is a Mormon connection. also you can find the Book of Mormon along with the Bible in many Marriott rooms.

On the other hand, please do this: "Barnes & Noble - Switching Industries". We know them today as a bookstore, but not when they began in 1873. They didn't get into the bookstore business until 1917.
I work for Marriot in the engineering department. I've had a good experience with them so far.
I used to work in hotels in the DC area in the late 80's and I had friends that worked at one of the higher end Marriott hotels and the thing about them, no matter which one, was that they were very standardized (more than any other chain of hotels). From the number of sugar packets at a table in the restaurant to how the rooms were cleaned to the products like soap and shampoo...all the same no matter which Marriott hotel you stayed in, and if something wasn't exactly right you got in trouble (they had an entire employee manual you had to follow)
for a costumer point of view. it can be a good feature. it would not matter in what city you are staying. you will always be able to know the way in there hotels. As there bigger clientele will be (jetlagged) businesspeople they would instantly feel at home.
The only thing better than perfection is standardization.

That is absolutely correct. Marriott got out of owning the properties but they manage them. Their SOPs are extensive. That’s why they’re so successful. Clients/guests appreciate continuity.
My hubby knows a guy and his last name is Marriott. No relation to Jw Marriott. When he travels he stays at Marriott and the staff think he is related and they offer him a free room. He just plays along!
I lived by the last Hot Shoppe I remember the day it closed because there were news teams all over the place coving the story.
I was mad about Hardees buying Roy Rodgers and closing them or changing the name but I am glad to see them coming back and actually live by one

Just a random fun fact. Bill Mariott’s brothers wife is an Opera Singer and I performed with her in an Opera in 2016 at the University of Utah!
Bill’s brothers name is Richard E. Marriott and his wife’s name is Nancy Peery Marriott. They both went to school at the University of Utah and donate a lot of money to the school and the music department! The auditorium inside of Kingsbury Hall, where a LOT of Univ. of Utah operas, musicals, ballets, and other various professional companies/performers come through is named after Nancy and her foundation. The Nancy Peery Marriott foundation.
You are a bit wrong about the Six Flags Theme Parks. Marriot actually opened the theme parks (Great America and California's Great America) themselves, and operated them before they sold the parks later.
Also, CGA isn’t even a Six Flags park though lol but he said “two Six Flags parks” as if CGA isn’t owned by Cedar Fair lol.
I believe the late 80's also saw their transition toward a franchise model, which was a big change but allowed quite a bit of growth.

Wow, so many memories in that one. As a kid of the Northeast Metroplex, I remember a few of those names! A&W was always my Dad's favorite. Roy Rogers I remember because the old saying was, "They use Trigger meat to make their burgers" :) Gino's was a family favorite for chicken, until one day we drove down there only to find it turned into a Kentucky Fried Chicken. Howard Johnson's I remember for breakfast buffets and chili overloaded with thickly-cut vegetables. What a trip that it was all under, at some point, one hotel company. Thanks!
Pre-pandemic, I had to travel often for work, and the older, more experienced coworkers always insisted on staying in Marriott hotels when possible. Have never had a bad experience at a Marriott hotel.
Loved seeing this one! I used to work for their Westin brand in the kitchen, and food still remains central to how they measure success in many of their higher end establishments, with massive amounts of budgets and focus going into drawing people into the food service side of these brands. I neve knew about the extent of their food service acquisitions but I do know that to this day the way their food service operations within the hotels are viewed remains key.
Marriott's first food service contract for the Government was at the US Treasury Department in 1939. Their first food service contract in the hospital market was at Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC. Marriott lasted there from 1955 until 1990. It was a shame they sold it to Sodexho. The quality was not the same after Marriott sold their food service management division. The food at Children's National Medical Center was amazing under Marriott.
Marriott built two "Great America" parks, and one was eventually sold to Six Flags. The other eventually to Paramount.
Yes, exactly. I didn’t wanna be “that guy” and comment to correct him, but the fact that he called both of them “Six Flags parks” irked me lol.
I worked for the Marriott for 6 years and only left because the building owner didn't want to renew the brand name (would require renovating rooms and it cost too much). I was the back-end of the front desk: when you called to place a room service order or ask for extra towels or whatever, that was me you'd talk to, then I'd relay the word to the appropriate departments. I loved the company, they had great benefits! They'd give you Rosetta stone language lessons totally free ( as the more languages you learn the more you help the company), they had tuition reimbursement, and killer deals on rooms particularly in the slow season. I remember being in awe when I heard the Marriott philosophy " We take care of our employees first. You take care of your employees and in return they'll take great care of our guests." Hell yeah. I hated my actual job, but I loved working for the company and loved the people I worked with. I always recommend to young folks who may want to travel or don't know what they want to do: grab a job with Marriott, they'll train you, pay for school, and allow you to travel as they have locations all over the world.

Thanks for putting this together! I asked for this on your poll a little while ago. You did mis the Sodexo aspect, Marriott Distibution Services, Marriott Assisted Living (sold to Sunrise), short lived cruise line, you touched on Amusement Parks, and not a mention about Marriott's bailout by Pepsi during the market crash in the 80's. But a great job all away around!

you know I found your channel when I was at my cousins house I was in the living room going to sleep because of the snoring that came from the room that we were staying in I saw this on the TV The video I think was the Nike history thing I was watching it and I decided that I wanted to watch more videos like that but I didn’t end up finding your channel until a few years ago and to be honest your content never disappoints me.
Any Big Boy restaurant I've been to was in Michigan and the full name on the sign included Elias Brothers' Big Boy. Apparently, the Big Boy franchising could be an entire video on it's own. When I did a quick search to see if the full name I was familiar with was associated with Marriott, there's an entire Wikipedia page on it, as well as other sources.
That's insane! Thank you for educating us! I didn't know most of this stuff. My sister worked at one pre pandemic but her last 6 months or so there, she only worked one day per month just to keep her discount. As her brother, I was given the same discount. I just had to get a form from her that she signed with her employee info. Because of that, when I drove from Wisconsin to Arizona and back, as well as round trips to Indiana, I stayed in many Marriott brand hotels at motel prices. $200-300 rooms I was paying $40-50 for. After the virus slowed everything down, my sister was one of the first to be let go. I miss that discount.... 🙂🙂🙂

It's hard to follow these companies sometimes. You know they're starting out as one thing. They start out as a root beer float stand and now they're a big huge giant mega worldwide company. They own all these hotel brands that I'd probably forgotten about. I've eaten and maybe a couple of their restaurants but some of them I never heard of or I forgot about them.
For me, this is a revelation. I didn't know most things that were mentioned in the video, so thanks for the enlightenment. I would love a separate video on Roy Rogers
Thanks for doing this one! I've worked at Marriott HQ since graduating college, 14 years and counting, and I've had a great experience doing so.
Our first Marriott hotel got built in 1997 and several year later they changed it to courtyard by Marriott. A other hotel company built Cambria hotel across from original Marriott hotel and several year they changed the name to Springhill by Marriott. Brand new TownePlace suites by Marriott is under construction next to Springhill suites hotel.
I stayed at the JW Marriot in Banderas, TX and it was so very wonderful. We made it a spa weekend and they were just fantastic
Mike, Great over view of Marriott. I knew they were big in food service, but not to the extent you pointed out. Another food chain they owned, for at least a while (1975 to 1982), was Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour's. I seem to remember that they also had a lot of food concessions at the major theme parks across the country. One was Cedar Point in Ohio. I think they had the contract there for a stretch in the '70s and 80s.
These stories of brands you put out shows that a business needs to adapt or die as it goes to growing pains and the adaptation part is probably a part of the growing pains

One of their parks was sold to Six Flags, which is Six Flags Great America located just outside of Chicago. The other park, California’s Great Adventure, was sold to Paramount and later Cedar Fair.
People where I live still refer to going to Six Flags as “going to Marriot’s”

OMG!!! WAG's❤️❤️❤️. It was so good and employees were so friendly. I remember eating a lot there with my parents every time we went to Ft. Lauderdale for vacation.
I used to work for Courtyard by Marriott as a Front Desk Associate and I had no idea how hard they tried to be a part of the food industry! It was one of the better jobs I've had in my life. The discounted rates employees got on certain hotels was astounding, but the pay wasn't the best. I would definitely work for them again for the right price.

Last week I stayed at the Williamsburg Lodge which is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection properties. It is an incredible facility with tons of amenities and great food! My work organization looks at Marriot properties first for conventions and reunion functions.
I used to stay at Courtyard alot and being from VA there are so many marriott hotels around here of the southeastern side. Courtyard is so comfy they are like the perfect 3.7/4-star hotel.

Me, my brother and niece stayed in a Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on 5th Avenue during our trip to New York back in May of this year. It was a pleasant experience!
One of my first jobs was working as a cook in a conference center where all the catering was provided by Marriott! Until I saw this video, I had no idea that that food-service part of the company was actually the ORIGINAL part of the Marriott business! And, from memory, the name of the company was Host Marriott and was the "ownership and debt" part of the company that had been split off from the hotel part as you describe. All this time I thought I had worked for some sort of unknown side division of Marriott! Thanks, I really enjoyed this!
Wow, I loved the Roy Rogers Show as a kid, watching Roy, Dale, and Trigger save the day. I never knew there was also a restaurant at one time.

Back in the late 80s Marriott opened a hoge motel here in Portland Oregon , they had one of the best sunday brunches ever.

The two theme parks are the Great America parks and were known as Marriott's Great America. One in Santa Clara, CA, and the other outside of Chicago, Il. Today, Six Flags owns the Illinois park but they never owned the CA park. That park today is currently owned by Cedar Fair after having been owned by Paramount and the County of Santa Clara for a while. On the restaurant note, I'd like a video covering Allie's more. Can't find much about it online.

Coaster Enthusiast here... You're wrong on the Amusement park thing. They opened 2 Amusement Parks, both called "Marriot's Great America", one in Silicon Valley Santa Clara, California, and the other in Chicagoland Gurnee, IL. They sold the Santa Clara park to Kings Entertainment Company, which later got bought by Paramount Parks to become Paramount's Great America before becoming part of Cedar Fair as California's Great America. Due to it's location and Cedar Fair's high amount of debt, the park is sold and is slated to close within 10 years. The Illinois park was sold to the Six Flags company where it now still operates as Six Flags Great America to this day, that's also how Six Flags has the Bugs Bunny and Looney Toons licence today.
You said that they both owned and sold 2 Six Flags parks, meanwhile they opened them, not Six Flags and only sold one of them to the Six Flags company

I had worked for Marriott for a little over 10 years. Was my first job as a dishwasher at a conference center and worked my way up. I enjoyed getting discounts at other Marriott's when I went on vacation.

Around DC, Marriott also briefly ran a fast food chain called Hot Shoppes, Jr., which sold roast beef sandwiches in greasy buns and bland broiled chicken, all wrapped in foil paper. As I recall, one day they replaced all of them with Roy Rogers - which we always called Leonard Slye's - and did much better business with roast beef and burgers on dry buns. One day there was a commercial where Roy was walking with a man in chicken suit, and told him, "Chicken? I've got some bad news for you." That's when RR started selling fried chicken.
I worked for Marriott twice in the late 80s early 90s... Marriott Travel Plaza was a BK/Nathan's with a gift shop and maps on the Pa Tpk. Then in the 90s at Temple U they owned the pizza/convenience store at the dorms.

Marriott opened two Marriott’s Branded Theme Parks both Called “Marriott’s Great America” in 1976. One was built in Gurnee, IL now “Six Flags Great America” and one in Santa Clara Clara California now “California’s Great America” owned by Cedar Fair. They did this to get into the theme park industry to compete with Disney and other region theme parks at the time. There was a third park planned for the DC area that got scrapped.

Yep! Although my family didn't go to the Marriott's Great America theme park in Santa Clara CA until the following year from its 1976 opening, it was there at the time and even before that in the early 70s when we were on a ride in the area and saw it being built! The Marriott Hotel is still there but has nothing to do with the park anymore.
I remember going to Roy Rogers in the Frederick Towne Mall fairly regularly growing up. It was owned by Hardee's by then, though, and I remember enjoying the food. The condition of the mall now is sad though, especially since I have so many memories there.
I had no idea Mariott used to be a food company or even that they owned so many different hotel companies! It's quite fascinating
