I'm formerly from the Taos area. My friends and I frequently slithered underneath the fence on the west side. We would hang out on the bridge ironworks for the ultimate view of the canyon. No we never tried to go more than 10-15 feet because as you can see they are to steep to venture far on plus none of us were stupid to tempt the grim reaper. Just a ways north you can drive down into the canyon where you could cross the river. On the west side there was a trail where you would find hot springs in a pool just right next to the river that you could soak in. It is my understanding they were destroyed some years ago. Taos county is an awesome place as long as you can escape the tourists when needed.
I stopped here did some photography and bought several beautiful rocks from a stand set up on the edge of the bridge ,this place is amazing very windy though @ the time 😊
You can head South/SW out of Taos and drive down into the gorge at the Rio Grand Gorge park HQ, then back up on a windy, scary yet beautiful road. We did it in a VW Jetta. Not recomended, but its all we had for a rental. At the end of the trail you can approach the bridge from the West side of it. We walked about a thrid of the way out.
I’m scared of heights and did both, shook like a leaf the whole way. I didn’t enjoy it & don’t remember the scenery - if you’re scared, turning around is best! 😊
I had a hard time walking on that bridge. I kept from the edge as much as I could and didn't like the cars shaking it.
That’s has always been one of my biggest fears since childhood.
I always thought New Mexico was flat but it is very mountainous and have a vally.

Tim Daugherty ....there are many like that all over the west. There is one in Twin Falls Idaho, and one in Page, Arizona over the Colorado.
Spectacular landscape and bridge! Seems to be a rather popular walk. Thanks for sharing!
If you're thinking of jumping... don't, you can only go up from the lowest point.

I could only walk a quarter of the way across. The bridge moves when vehicles go across it. I just turned around and noped my way back to my car
Lapis Lazarus, don’t even dream of going to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, or the Hoover Dam Bridge outside Vegas.
