'Some People' lurk in the back of the auditorium with a blank picket sign and magic markers just waiting for you to say something they can get offended about. I put in the extra effort, which is why I'm Randy's favorite viewer :D
My first encounter with "some people" was over 200 years ago when I delivered the newspaper to Thomas Edison's house. Some people hung around outside his house and said radio would never catch on, and their carrier pigeons were by far the best means of long distance communications. But of course you had to pass the test to use them legally.
Your definition of “some people” is perfect, and I know I’m being silly for stopping on all the hidden messages, but I really enjoy your humor and the challenge of stopping on them (HINT: playback speed adjustment is your friend).
As a female ham and gmrs operator, I appreciated your smooth, clean, and nicely trimmed fingernails some people on the RUclipss have scary jagged nails, with dry dirty hands. Yikes!! Thank you
Hey Mr. Randy, I really like that shirt! Another good thing about the internet radio, there aren't any scanners that pick up the transmission unless you're connected to a repeater or a rf simplex node.
Well that is unless you count the NSA and the FBI supercomputers which look at, and check every packet on the planet. You people are Beyond ignorant if you think anything you say on the Internet is private.
Coming from someone not involved in the ham community, I think network radios, assuming they have a SIM slot, can be extremely useful. Think of industries such as logistics, construction, etc. Back in the day, Nextel was very popular with those folks, and, had Sprint not destroyed it, I think it still would be. In fact, in the Southeast, we still have Southern Linc. A network radio can basically do the same thing, with the advantage of you being able to use whichever wireless carrier works best in your area. Pop in a SIM, sign into Zello, and hand it to an employee.
The UV-5R is the BEST HAM RADIO YOU CAN BUY! And you can take that to the bank! Thanks as always Randy. You're the sexiest and most bestest RUclipsr there is, I don't deserve to watch you. What the world needs now is more Randys and less sad HAMs!
Internet radio has become increasingly common for companies that need to communicate sensitive information (e.g. healthcare companies) because they can have their employees get the phone app and pay a moderate service fee. Due to the sensitive information, to use a standalone radio system, they would need to get more expensive digital voice radios. Plus, that assumes they are able to get a business radio license to be allowed to transmit. There are situations where it makes sense, although "some people" can never seem to figure out that different people sometimes have different situations.
Anther good use for network radios is building interior communications. Security, maintenance, housekeeping, etc. If you have wifi coverage, you have comma. Can talk from the basement to the roof.
I'm actually curious about these kinds of radios from an off grid standpoint because you could probably configure a local server, and 2.4ghz wifi propagates well with directional antennas. It would open up some interesting possibilities assuming they could be configured to use in an offline scenario. As an IT nerd, I know much more about wifi than I would about GMRS, FRS, MURS, 2M, 70CM, etc. Getting the bits in and out to show you things you expect from a smart phone but in a purpose built ruggedized wifi device that fits in a single hand is a niche I can appreciate.
Motorola made a frequency hopping spread spectrum radio using 2.4ghz for the UK market. DtR 2450 I think is the model number, check out a video on it here on RUclips.
LOL I had to freeze frame it to finally see your 1 frame flash definition of "Some People" I was not disappointed. Have been watching your Videos for a long time Randy keep up the good work.
I use both POC and analog. POC is for long distance and private conversations with my non-tech friends, and I keep analog for commute chats with strangers. POC is not a SHTF preparation, never thought it would be one. And I be more comfortable carrying a $70 gadget than using my phone.
This is an honest question, because I have been trying to think of a practical use case for an interweb radio... In what scenario are you uncomfortable using your understandably expensive and fragile phone in which the range of a $20 radio is too small?
Considering the fact that you can use encryption with wifi, and that you can basically set up a network however you want(lan or wan, repeaters or not), i think the use case is pretty obvious.
I have only been in this radio hobby a few months and find it very interesting how many ways there are to enjoy it and how there are equally as many ways to be offended by how others enjoy the hobby!
It only takes one or two stupid heads to completely ruin a very expensive repeater and drive everyone away. I almost never get on the air now because of this problem.
I can't thank you enough for the step by step info on maneuvering the fcc website. Probably saved me 4 hours and 3 rage quits:) Keep up the good work and information
What is fantastic is that those who are saying that these aren't radios are almost certainly communicating with a personal electronic device utilizing a wifi radio. If the internet thing is bugging you, there are lots of PTT apps that do not require an internet connection, but they won't work on the device that is shown in this video.
They have their place in the world but I dont think "tactical" communications is it. My company uses them for specific jobs but the primary network is still VHF. I actually loved playing with it! I heard Icom was going to make combination radio with both VHF and network. I'll be getting one of those when or if it does. Great video! Keep offending. I love it!
*As a wise man once said, for those of you who don't get it... "You've got to know when to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away And know when to run* You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done"
i did have a "Some people" experience! but with programming (now called coding) I asked a simple question, and "Some people" informed me how stupid my question was. I still needing to know the answer, just tried different ways till i resolved it. then posted back to "Some people" that "here is the answer! never mind." 🙂
Does the Ksun model you show in this video work on any US cell providers or are you just using it on wi-fi? I have one of their less expensive models that has issues with US providers. Thanks. And thanks for the entertaining and informative videos.
WOW I actually heard others screaming and small explosions outside when you were mentioning historical facts and dates regarding events explaining the technology we all so much enjoy in everyday life. keep up the great learning videos.
"MOIST." HAHA! One of my daughter's friends HATES that word. She think other words are more suitable, like "damp." She may have learned that in nursing school; I don't know. I asked, "Really? Do you prefer your cupcakes to be damp? What? You mean moist cupcakes aren't better?" She had nothing. 🤪
I use both but I do enjoy my net Radio. I Hava a hybrid cell phone/net radio/push to talk UHF/VHF transceiver. I have a great time participating in net discussions on Echolink and GMRS live on Zello. I still love using my traditional radios, base and handheld but my network radio is with me all the time. Thank you for the video.
I took a 7 year hiatus from ham radio because of all the 'Some People' in the hobby. The arrogance reeks in ham radio, and they wonder why 'the hobby is dying'. I'm back at it but GMRS is so much more fun and relaxing!
I own a few baofeng gmrs uv5rtp and I just was given a new gm 15 pro gmrs radio. Ave you evaluated it. I am able to use the other radios to talk to each other on gmrs frequencies. The gm15 pro seems to have a little bit more receiving range, is that your experience. I am a former military Mars operator
Hey bro, I agree with your exclamation about these radios and they are indeed radios and they are a very cool tech I got the new ksun ZL 30 radio and it is a nice radio to use had a little bit of getting used to of the buttons and controls but I can navigate the radio easy keep up the good work with your videos brother don’t let the haters get to you
i think the confusion comes from it using the Internet: if i disable the wifi and use a otg adapter to plug in a ethernet cable, can i still call it a radio?
I have used Zello before, seemed to work ok if you can tolerate the delay. When you hold the PTT it records you and only transmits when you let go. Doesn't work great for certain things like spotting someone backing a trailer. What is the advantage of using an internet radio over just using the Zello app on your phone?
In some states you can use a "radio" while driving, but you must never touch a cellphone. The radio also does what you program it to do. Apps are voluntary. I place radios in my aging relatives home. Checking on them is quick and to the point. And vice-versa. I am aging as well.
We tried using Zello to communicate while auto racing in endurance races. Most of the time communicating was nearly instant, but sometimes the delay was minutes. Not good when the driver says he’s pitting next lap and the crew doesn’t get the message til after he shows up in the pit stall. So since it was not 100% reliable we went with GMRS radios.
Sound output. Cellphones are great if it's next to your head, and it's relatively quiet. Most POC devices are loud, and designed so you psychologically think it's a radio.
Thats not true at all. The comms are real time, not recorded. There is a delay at the beginning of the transmission of like 1 second before you can start talking, but the other person hears you as you speak then when you let go of the ptt they have the same 1 second delay before they transmit. The echo channel on zello will record your audio so you can hear how you sound, everything else is real time.
Well, I thought this topic was right up your street -- a great choice for your loyal viewers, like me. Radios are about communication at a distance ... that's all 99.9% of people care about. I like all the little ins and outs, but at the end of the day, it's just about long-distance communication without wires or strings. You gave a great intro to this different way of communicating at a distance with the internet POC radios (one of your best vids), but these radios will never be able to contact Voyager, in deep space. Why does that matter, you ask? It doesn't, of course, which is exactly your point! (Sad Ham self-glazes, and sticks cloves into his skin) You use the right radio for the right case of communicating at a distance. Duh. That's it. "Purists" have their place, I suppose -- I'll think up what it is in a moment -- but knowing different ways to communicate at a distance, like GMRS, about which I knew zilch until I happened across one of your videos, just means the opportunity to make smart choices for a given set of circumstances and conditions (including fatness or thinness of the wallet). Zello is just another option to evaluate. I will admit, however, that sometimes I am "some people," just never on your channel because I don't want my 'nads blow-torched off. Also I'm in therapy. Bottom line: you are Mr. Practical, and Mssrs. Hypothetical, Theoretical, and Wannabe simply aren't going to be happy watching your funny videos. After all, you might teach them something, and that would destroy their self-centered worldviews in which they ALWAYS know more than anyone else.

Ive tried everything, asked friends. Went to a radio shop who said they could program it for money. I hope this is the right place to ask you this question. Thanks for being a true person. No radio can talk to "all radios" but an UNlocked UV-5R can talk w/a lot of radios. If your UV-5R cant transmit outside of the ham frequencies then it is locked. You might be able to unlock it (search youtube for 'unlock UV-5R), but many of the newer ones cannot be unlocked.
@@TheNotaRubicon thanks....I have both a older UV-5R and one bought this year....will check the unlock...the radios are Motorola with 16 channels..freg is 456.175
Thank you Randy for sharing how Steve Jobs was really ahead of his time and under acknowledged in so many ways. Jobs, at the age of 7 in 1962, invented some of the technology that now allows network radio. Jobs was an enterprising young dude. Especially since Al Gore hadn’t even invented the inter-web yet! 😂😅😂
I prefer a real radio, as you said "less points of failure". I just don't get the advantage of a network radio, you can just install a network radio app on a smartphone to do the same over cellular or Wifi. Perhaps I'm missing something?
Do you know of any regular radio + Zello radio combined into one? I mean I carry a phone so I use that for Zello but I also carry a UV5-R but it would be cool to get one device like the Ulefone 20Wt except not shit.
I have learned over the years, that it is easier to just scream out the window. It's probably better than 911, depending on what you scream. ("My radio won't connect. Did you put in an IT ticket?? Argh.")
Live and learn, I never knew that Steve Jobs invented cell phone technology when he was 7 years old. If only he'd focused all that brain wave activity towards cancer research, he might still be with us. Oh well.
@@TheNotaRubicon I don't usually take paper towels to the woods.. so... I recently purchased a few hundred acres in the middle of nowhere in the Sierra mountains , I was looking at these radios because I thought maybe If I install a starlink connection on the building site , And then if I'm working on the property cutting down trees building roads I could use a zello walkie talkie to Make a call while I'm walking around the property there are lots of trees and hills So radio has to be able to catch a signal from 2 mi away .. I don't know much about radios can you recommend something that would work for me? Only other thing I've considered is putting small repeater at the building site I'll run the antenna 100 feet up a redwood tree.
You really entertain me because "some people" really are dumb. And you tell them that very nicely! I love it. BUT, you are informative in your technical videos. Thanks. Very funny
An entire Imperial Fuckton of people don't know what RADIO is. I once had a grown ass man who was listening to Spotify via his cellphone through a Bluetooth speaker proundly proclaim that he NEVER listens to radio. I didn't bother to TRY to explain the he was JUST AT THAT MOMENT that he WAS listening to RADIO, In fact He was listening to radio at least TWICE. 🤦♂️Radio communication has NEVER been bigger than it is NOW.
It might not be real radio per say, but for a restaurant to set up a repeater, and get a business license, and radios is very expensive. And technically it's a data radio
I deal with "some people" frequently on my channel. "Some people" usually click on a video, then either don't even watch the video, or skip through the video missing all the important information, then ask questions or make comments that were already covered in the video. "Some people" are the most annoying and lazy people you'll ever deal with and usually expect to be spoon fed information, then become agitated and aggressive when you point out that the information they're either asking about or commenting was already covered in the very video they're asking or commenting on. "Some people" can get F....d as far as I'm concerned.
Factories and healthcare facilities seem to be favoring them, they already have the infrastructure set up to have WiFi throughout the building compared to installing a railcar full of uhf repeaters in the building because electricities don't like flying through steel and concrete much
I deal with "some people" every day. Well, I hate to break it to "some people," but cell phones are also "radios." basically its a duplex system using dtmf opening numerous linked repeaters, similar to D-star. Now, there will be "some people" that will explain how it's different. However, it operates very similarly and is a radio.
'Some People' lurk in the back of the auditorium with a blank picket sign and magic markers just waiting for you to say something they can get offended about. I put in the extra effort, which is why I'm Randy's favorite viewer :D

I'll vote for you!!!
I prefer a real radio, as you said "less points of failure". I just don't get the advantage of a network radio, you can just install a network radio app on a smartphone to do the same over cellular or Wifi. Perhaps I'm missing something?
Try doing that next to a double-decker pizza oven! Plus it's way cheaper for a restaurant than putting up a repeater.
Smoke signals in Ebonics will be the new future of communications in America!
Do you know of any regular radio + Zello radio combined into one? I mean I carry a phone so I use that for Zello but I also carry a UV5-R but it would be cool to get one device like the Ulefone 20Wt except not shit.
Inrico, Anytones, and Rockbox comes to mind
I have learned over the years, that it is easier to just scream out the window. It's probably better than 911, depending on what you scream.
("My radio won't connect. Did you put in an IT ticket?? Argh.")
Live and learn, I never knew that Steve Jobs invented cell phone technology when he was 7 years old. If only he'd focused all that brain wave activity towards cancer research, he might still be with us. Oh well.
Steve Jobs invented radio waves and electricity in 1879.
So if I have this radio in the woods where there's no internet connection that radio is useless to me is that correct.??
Not totally useless because you can still use it to hold down your paper towels to keep them from blowing away in the wind.
“SOME PEOPLE” CLEARLY IS KC6UBP
What we have here is a failure...to communicate...some people you just caint reach...no matter how unstupid they are..
God bless You
Can you create a video on how to make a Zello gateway for a gmrs radio. I figured it’s worth a try to ask. Thanks
It's like 'Wonkavision'... Neat!!
You really entertain me because "some people" really are dumb. And you tell them that very nicely! I love it. BUT, you are informative in your technical videos. Thanks. Very funny
I think "Some People" comment without even watching the video.
Thank you for having the flag upside-down showing the US is in trouble..not many know that meaning......
Love the shirt 😊❤
Still looking for my tube zello radio.
It might not be real radio per say, but for a restaurant to set up a repeater, and get a business license, and radios is very expensive.
And technically it's a data radio
Where you able to test said radios out in your JEEP ?
If so how did they make out ?
POC Radio... "Piece Of Chit" . Thanks for the vid!
Factories and healthcare facilities seem to be favoring them, they already have the infrastructure set up to have WiFi throughout the building compared to installing a railcar full of uhf repeaters in the building because electricities don't like flying through steel and concrete much
We call "Some People" around the South east Georgia area Fertilizer, because that's all they good for.
Thank you!
Great shirt !
I been trying to talk on your zello, but I can't get in it. I got to verify my email address, and I don't know how.
Ptt over cellular is used in lots of emergency services across the world. Flawlessly. 😅
"Some People" = Pickle Smoochers
So, your saying the Earth is round?
