I am to be in the 41st cohort and have been following your videos during my application process and they have been so helpful to understand the program a bit more. Thank you for making this, I would love to connect with you. Another video I would love to see is what to pack. A year is a long time and I know the winters** are brutal compared to the southern US temps that I am used to. I would love to hear your input. I am gonna go back to binging your new vlogs now :)))

Yes! I agree on making the packing video! What did you take that you didn’t need? What did you wish you had brought?

Aww I’m so glad that this was helpful and that you found the video to begin with! I will brainstorm more about a packing video 😊

Hi! I'm thinking of applying for next summer and i had a question regarding the flexibility with the internship search. My plan is to apply to two 3-month long internships, first one in frankurt with the us consulate and then once that's up, with the embassy in Berlin. That way they would occupy the February-June internship portion of the year abroad with cbyx.
Would they allow me to do that or are they keen on limiting your internship options to what they want/recommend? Or how would this work with my permanent location, in case im not placed in those cities?
    Any help is appreciated! Ty

Hi! You can definetly have two, shorter term internships to fulfill the internship phase. However they are pretty strict with you finding an internship in your permanent location. Unless you can coordinate the internships before May, you will most likely have to wait until you find out your permanent placement to start your internship search. I also would say that while working for the embassy/consulate would be super cool, there’s a very small chance that you would actually land both of those internships anyway. So don’t hang your CBYX experience on that happening! Also, the program does not want students moving once they are at their permanent location and will not find you housing. A lot of being successful in CBYX is being flexible and rolling with the punches. Might be a bit harsh, but I want to make sure you have a realistic picture of what your year may look like. :)

Any tips for the application itself?

There’s three things the program is looking for: flexibility, resilience, and genuine interest in Germany. In your application materials and interview, make an effort to showcase that you are flexible in where you’ll be placed, what situations you’ll face, and also a willingness to not stick to rigid expectations. They also want to ensure that you are equipped with the skills and experience to be able to successfully navigate a year abroad, so being able to be a problem-solver, can advocate for yourself, and that you can handle being away from home. Lastly, show that you’ve done your research! Know about current politics and main politicians. Figure out why specifically you’re interested in Germany. I think keeping those things in mind will help you prepare a strong application!
