Russia screwed up by allying with France & not Germany. Russia had literally just fought France and the U.K. in the Crimean War and fought the diplomatically after the Russo-Turkish war.
lol, yeah maybe but they feared Austria-Hungary's and Germany's growing influence in the Balkans, since they depended on the Black Sea port for trade. There was also the issue of soft power, as Russia controlled the Balkans through a common religion (Orthodox Christianity). It's important to keep in mind how much the Balkans influenced European politics at the time. Unless, you're suggesting that allying with Germany woud have prevented that issue entirely, in which case, I'll just say that countries are intrinsically greedy, Russia most likely didn't want to give up any control. I'd love to hear your opinion on the matter.
@The Brain Filler - I mean Russia should have allied with just Germany (and not Austria). Austria had been Russia’s ally but they had backstabbed Russia in the Crimean War. During the Austro-Prussian war Russia could have helped Prussia and they could have partitioned Austria. The other great powers wouldn’t object much since Italy also helped Prussia in the Austro-Prussian war and France supported Italian unification. This would have been beneficial for both Germany and Russia, and Germany would not have any interest in opposing Russia in the Balkans
Yes, i mean interestingly, Germany had long had good relations with Russia. In fact, I highly recommend you look into the Reinsurance treaty. It was a treaty, created by Bismarck, that was essentially an alliance with Russia, in it Germany promised to maintain Russia’s sphere of influence in the Balkans and keep out of each other’s business. However, it wasn’t renewed in 1890, which led to Russia having to seek another ally (France). Logical things rarely happen in history, lol.
I knew most of this but I wanted to refresh my brain,I’m big into the historian game and this helped me remember and learn a few details, you have released some of my stress sir and thank u (you have ur self a new sub)
I am here to politely give some positive feedback, as a student this video was very helpful but one thing i found difficult to understand was when you were seeming to go on tangents as shown in your conclusion, adding and example on the end to a therefore statement was not so much confusing as it was annoying. But thankyou for making this video, 2 YEARS AGO !!!!
You were doing alright UNTILL the end of the film. Don't despair there's lots of leg left in this presentation technique . Thanks, if but a little short.
I miss that Russia. Then she was next to everyone in the same party. Made alliances and fought. And now the whole of Europe considers it enemy number 1 for the whole world. Russia, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Sweden - these countries have always been close to each other. All their history. I don't know how to explain what I feel. It seems to me that Russia is moving away from Europe, although it has always been part of it. I think it shouldn't be.

@The Brain Filler - Who didn’t want net to renew it in 1890, Russia or Germany?

Yeah it’s quite unfortunate. It seems Putin is focussing only on the darker sides of Russia’s history with Europe.
