Sakuga are the sequences in an anime that are breathtaking: that first iconic fight of the episode; or the first time you get a close, dramatic, look at a new character. The trick is that your brain carries that level of detail into the following sequences and the rest of the animation. If you've ever seen an out of context shot of an anime that looked like it was drawn by a 5 year old and wondered why it works, sakuga are why.The long shots of stationary characters talking (just a freeze frame with a moving mouth). The fight scenes that are the same two moves over and over again. Sakuga are why people don't pay attention to that. The quality has been set subconsciously. The same is often true of the early episodes of a show compared to later episodes (or fillers). In Tony Hawk when you first watched the first cut scene, and took you control after, you kept seeing those beautiful PS1 cut scene graphics. Now that we're experienced gamers and technology has advanced so far even the cut scenes look low quality. Final fantasy 7 is the best example personally. Back when I first played it every scene was the same quality as the cut scenes. It was easy for my mind to imagine cut scene quality in the combat sprites, and to then carry that to the world sprite. Blocky Cloud was beautiful.
