The original london MM, Johnnie Fiorri. She was a beautiuflly talented woman, so vocally raw! Some reason she received many slatings, especially on here, for a performance which i always felt was shockingly genuine and really hair raising!
She's anointed to sing so of course " the enemy" would attack through the negative words of ignorant people who more then likely can't sing at all without going flat. I sing so I know a great voice when I hear it!
my school just finished our production and after this song we had to take a break for applause and according to our director that's the first time that she has had to do that in 45 years
I would counter by saying that one of the interesting things about Hairspray is it gives its mostly one-dimensional characters a chance to shine at least once in the piece. This is Motormouth's, and it captures not only the optimism of the movement which she heads, but the anger at the injustice. It takes a break from the diva-ness to add tenseness on purpose. That's why this is my favorite recording of this song.
I talked to her on MySpace about a month after her departure and she said it was because she felt she was "done" with the show because she did it for almost 2 years.
You and me both! My black friends always say I have a black soul, so I guess that's some consolation. This song is SO powerful, I get chills every time I hear it.
Great production. You gotta hear Samia Butler perform this song in her school play at Central High School in St. Paul, MN. Totally amazing vocal. Search youtube: Central Musical 2012 Hairspray.
lots of criticism from fans, never saw why! Saw both her and Sandra Marvin (her understudy who latter took over when Johnnie suddenly left), and thought they were euqally good, just different
You think it's okay for a guy to do this part? I just got casted for it here and I don't know if a man could have the chops to belt this one out. It's such a serious song...
I would love to do this part... check me out as EFFIE WHITE in Dreamgirls production in the Midwest. Let me know what you guys think and if you know of any open auditions I'dlove to be considered. Check out my peformances on my youtube page.
You think you can do better, yet your voice "cracks" on the big parts? And your a white boy to? lol no. Black women/men tend to have a better gospel voices because of there heritage. Don't say you can do better without solid proof to let others judge your statement. Arrogant much?
Nevermind. The set solidified my suspicions. It's a good community theater production. She made some..."interesting" choices in her vowel shapes, and I would have personally avoided that nasal color she chose at certain points, but overall not bad. Awkward entrance on the background soloists part though. It's supposed to crescendo into the phrase.
Also this is a full-scale equity production. NOT regional theatre. This is the original London production of HAIRSPRAY. if you knew the show, you would know that this set is actually identical to the Broadway production design.
1. Taking my comment that ended with ( :P ) a bit to seriously are you not. 2. This woman really wasn't that good, I ain't saying anything against ALL black people 3. I still do think I could do better, and I don't have to prove it I am just stating why I think, I ain't saying it's fact :) Kind of like how Republicans in the US think they can do better in the white house or Tories in the UK think they can do better, then they showed that they screwed it up even more XD
When she said" I'm here to TELL YOU!" I knew she was gone fuck it up!!❤
kayla Thomas
Now that's how you sing that damn song. I felt every bit of that emotion from her.
Right on! I still have goose bumps all over my legs and arms!
i hope she got a standing ovation after singing this song...incredible!!!

+Henson Asuncion that was a damn good one.
Ain't nobodies version better than Alex Newell's, but I did like this one.
In 2020 they are still fighting! #blacklivesmatter
The one song America needs to listen to get the message through to everyone.
That last "where I been" oh my damn..sent a shiver down my spine
Wow that second wind power she has. Her notes don’t stop they simply drop into a tenor. Fan-fucking-tastic
She is AMAZING!!!!!
Theory: Seaweed and Little Inez's dad was lost in the "fight"

That was absolutely, positively AMAZING!!!!!
her tone kept changing, from head to chest for the soft parts of the song
Is That a Compliment?
That's what you call good voice control. She's amazing!
That's how a good singer sings
It's actually bad to sing only in head voice.

Fantastic OMG
I talked to her on MySpace about a month after her departure and she said it was because she felt she was "done" with the show because she did it for almost 2 years.

Johnnie was amazing when I saw her and I always wondered why she left

The feels. 😢😢
You and me both! My black friends always say I have a black soul, so I guess that's some consolation. This song is SO powerful, I get chills every time I hear it.
Spectacular
It's actually London's West End. The performer is British and putting on an American accent, hence why she pronounces some vowel shapes weird.
Didn't one of the mediums from most haunted do this role?
@@brad_8711 really?
@@aderiusscott2220 Johnny Fiori.
She’s definitely American 👍🏻
Link singing along is so weird lmao boy where tf you been? Sears?
white men after getting invited to the cookout
OH HELL YES.
Great production. You gotta hear Samia Butler perform this song in her school play at Central High School in St. Paul, MN. Totally amazing vocal. Search youtube: Central Musical 2012 Hairspray.
I'm playing link for this musical even though I might not look like him I'm gonna try my best
He doesn't have to look a certain way, he just has to be attractive and give off an elvis vibe

Who else got this in their recommendation in 2020?
from a distance she looks like angie stone
I believe this is from the national tour, either way she does an amazing job.
No this is from the London production in 2007
You think it's okay for a guy to do this part? I just got casted for it here and I don't know if a man could have the chops to belt this one out. It's such a serious song...
Is that Mable King singing?
Angela Newman Kayla Thomas i believe
Mabel King died in the 90s, this is from the 2007 West end production. Johnnie Fiore is the one who is singing
I would love to do this part... check me out as EFFIE WHITE in Dreamgirls production in the Midwest. Let me know what you guys think and if you know of any open auditions I'dlove to be considered. Check out my peformances on my youtube page.
Was this professional or community theater?...
Torin Berman this was the west end production
This character makes me wish I was black all the time...

I know I'm 6 years late but in case anybody sees this - she's actually british, which is why her vowels kinda sound weird.
Also this is a full-scale equity production. NOT regional theatre. This is the original London production of HAIRSPRAY. if you knew the show, you would know that this set is actually identical to the Broadway production design.
@@hooey4362 shes American 👍🏻
I think I could do better... if my voice didn't crack at the big bites oh and i'm a white boy too :P
