Update: Deising's Bakery and Restaurant has responded and will be making the John Oliver Cake Bear! They will also be offering mini John Oliver Cake Bears for sale over the weekend, all proceeds of which will go to a local food pantry in Kingston. Really nice stuff.
That's great!
These are the updates we are looking for! 😂
Just checked their response (it's on fb). They are glorious. And yes they gave it A S S.
@@IntiQuetzalOrozcoMalfait as God intended 🙏
I love this.
POV: you're French. You wake up after a rough election night, in the middle of what is probably the deepest political crisis your country has seen in years. You see the Last Week Tonight notification on RUclips and think: "Oh, that'll cheer me up!", only to have John Oliver roast a hat you kinda like 😭
To be fair we joke about it since the announcement of the mascot
And a clip from that French TV show...
The Phrygian hat isn't bad, the mascot is a clit mascot ^^"
@@jenniferlambert7505 and the worst of them ....
I am French, and these Olympic games are going to be.....a disaster.
I really hope they do a followup with the bakery so we can see what the cake bear chimeras look like. Lol
Haha it normally does can’t wait until next week. That company is going to get a lot of business tomorrow
Yeah, they'd be quite foolish not to accept the offer. I'm sure it will be a huge boost for the bakery :)
It's gonna be a super ugly monster with small, strangely shaped ass, but John will still love it. :D
I hope they troll him back and call it the JO Cake Bear but make it a bird head since JO always jokes about how he looks like a bird 🤣 or something along those lines
They better give John dat ass when they make that cake. Cake with cakes eaten ass first. lol
Finally someone is talking about deep-sea mining (and not just Greenpeace). We've already been destroying the environment in countless of other ways, there must be a limit somewhere. We cannot allow the mining to continue.
I got to be honest here, Greenpeace talking about something is "red flag" for many people, since Greenpeace has shown over the years that they actually give 0 fucks about nature and are generally assholes. It's like a politician you hate actually having 1 good idea, it doesn't make you like them, you just think of them of as 0.1% less asshole.
Do you have the money to counter this? The only way to stop this sort of thing is to make it non-profitable for anyone. A huge, outrageous environmental tax that would be more than the revenue would probably work, but who is going to do that? Money is what is making our planet increasingly inhospitable.
There must be limit somewhere....hmmm, let's ponder that......
NO.
looks like how strip mining has left huge exposed devastation on earth. this time around it would be done far away from public scrutiny hence a license to destroy the fragile deep seas ecosystem there. this type of devastation cannot be repaired ever. absolutely no environmental sustainability. until there is nothing left to exploit, then we die.
it is remote, 99% of people neither know or care about it, and it is a multibillion dollar possibility for busineses. So it will happen.
I did not expecting that reagan punchline 🤣🤣🤣
I did before registering which year he used
Simple but effective, just like John Oliver new haircut
Yeah, me too
🤌🏻
Started laughing out loud in the bus. Everyone gave me a weird look but the guy next to me saw my phone screen and gave me a nod of understanding.
I am watching this in the middle of my work day, on my phone, however with much enjoyment on my face 👌💯
Where do you live?
Sweden, but I work nights ^^
Same here! 😂 During breakfast, but still!
@@nissetillberg5449 Even then it was late during work, it's like midnight in latam when they drop
What's the chance of 2 Swedes watching JO while at work (albeit at different times) and then commenting on it here? Asked the American living in Japan.
Safe to say, he doesn't need those cakes... WE ALL need those cakes now.
John Oliver: providing his own weird brand of kindness since April 2014
I love that the Red Lobster equipment has been donated already. There is always some public good hidden in these crazy crazy ventures of his.
That's what makes him so popular amongst us weird people
people get education AND entertainment, HBO gets more money (this show wouldn't be on its 11th season if it didn't bring in the Benjamins), someone bad gets the middle finger, someone in need got kitchen equipment, a bakery got free advertising & is about to ALSO get kitchen equipment, and John is getting his cake, truly Capitalism at its best.
As a Tongan I did not expect our country to be mentioned in a LWT episode. To find out that we signed an agreement along with only two other nations in Pacific being Nauru and Kiribati (as opposed to more developed PI nations of Fiji and Samoa) is really alarming!!
funny he talking about your country and the Olympics in the same episode without talking about that oiled guy who goes to the Olympics...
I've never met someone from Tonga in real life (that I'm aware of), what's your life like? If you don't mind me asking 😊

The fox guarding the henhouse is the classic one.
Human guarding the sheep? Who's more likely to eat sheep, humans or wolves?
You say some strange things in Finland. Have any of these become tourist slogans yet? (My family is hoping to visit your country).
Hey there Finland, in Slovakia we say "to make billy goat a gardener", which is pretty similar!
Finland always had a fascinating way to come up with stuff. Like when you want to tell someone to go F themselves (Finnish know what I'm talking about)
here in Brazil we also say "the dog guarding the sausage"...

This ocean story was literally the entire plot of the Avatar: the Way of Water.
Barron probably watched it drunk and thought "good idea!"
It was basically the plot of the first Avatar movie. Is the second movie literally just the first movie, but wet?
@@DragonbIaze052 That's an accurate summary, and the exploited resource is whales instead of rocks.
and of DUNE!!!!!
Funnily enough, that wasn't the only or even most recent event where Seine got filled with dead people.
In the 1961"Massacre of Paris" the French National Police murdered an estimated 300 Algerians during a protest.
Some got beaten to death, while others drowned, as the cops threw them into the river. Bodies were washing up the banks for weeks after the massacre.
The French government denied the event for 37 years, only acknowledging 40 deaths in 1998.
I love this show so much, it walks the line between total existential dread and delightful whimsy so well.

@@filiptang113 They're not protesting the cleaning itself, but the whole of the Olympics.
Yes, but not for the Olympics, then the government would never even try to fix the river. I get it if they protested a stadium that displaced tens of thousands of people, but cleaning a river that have been dangerously polluted for almost a hundred years is a little weird to me.

Man this last segment was brilliant. Love stories like this
I'm french and for me choosing the mariane cap, makes a lot of sense. We have one in every municipal building and it such a big and celebrated part of our history.
Understand how the mascote looks silly though.
While it's not the best looking french hat, it does stand for everything good about France, specifically about the republic and its values.
It would be fine if it looked like the Marianne cap, it's a good symbol and I don't think that that's what people are against. The problem is that not only does it look stupid, but it's really not recognisable as the bonnet prhygien. I'm well versed in history and symbolism and I didn't recognise it.
It's okay to be proud of it, but the macot is at best butchering the iconic hat. It looks more like a droopy red triangle with face slapped on it (oh and Kool-Aid man legs).
Just adding more. I learned today that the New York state also has a phrygien bonnet on it as well also symbolizing freedom.

The cake bears are being made by the bakery now. They accepted the challenge and they are selling fast. The bakery is donating the profits of the John Oliver cake bears to a local charity food bank. Great work from Oliver and the bakery. Respect.
This and Kurzgesagt always feed my existential dread, luckly the end segments with callenges with positive outcome give me a bit of hope (and big laughs)
Kurzgesagt would probably frame the deep sea mining as a hopeful tale of how we could prevend environmental collapse - before announcing a sponsorship with The Metals Company
Kurzgesagt can't help it though, they're german, they only know existential dread. John on the other hand does it out of a conscious choice.
Brits aren't far off either. They are born with so much pessimism, they practically always have a stiff upper lip.
@@Aiaibori1 Are they a sell out?
They make nice videos when it's about space stuff, but when it comes to analysis on social issues they get a bit more dicey.

About the Olympics, there is a lot that is not addressed here, like the fact that Parisian students were offered 100€ and tickets to one game of their choosing in exchange for... Giving up their apartment during the game to athletes and visitors.
Also, some parts of Paris will be closed to the general public during the opening ceremony.
And the already overworked public transport system is going to be even more overworked during the events, at the detriment of the Parisians and for the relative enjoyment of the tourists. Hopefully, it will shine a light on the catastrophic management of Macron.
Oh my god it’s Danbury 2.0 this is a wonderful year!

The hat is a specific symbol in France. It's an instantly recognizable symbol of the revolution, which in turn stands for democracy and the ideals of the republic, like the declaration of the human rights.
Excellent. Its use as the Olympics mascot, however, has a problem: it is unrecognizable. I paused the video and wondered for a whole minute what those things could possibly be. When it was said it is the Phrygian hat - I didn't recognize it either.
