I can tell you guys who is the man who comes back at the end. 1- That person returns to Tataroo Valley. This place only means something to Luke, not Asch. It was there that Luke first met Tear and where everything began for him. Tear ask him "why are you here?" (referring as home) it is Luke's "home". 2- Before Auldrant falls, Asch dies and his fonons go into Luke's body. But Asch's body doesn't disappear, it's not his big gang. He died from his injuries... So, Asch's mind went into Luke because he was the dominant one. When Luke freed Lorelei, his spirit went into Asch's body and allowed him to survive. (guess a part of Asch is still inside Luke after this) 3- The way that guy wear his sword at the end. He carries it the same way Luke did. (on his back) And also, he wears it like someone left handed. Luke was left handed and Asch was right handed. 4- When that man answered Tear question. It is the first and only time you can see Tear crying. (that means a lot) Also, you can clearly see that she is smiling at the end, Luke is finally back ! There are a ton more of evidence that shows it is Luke at the end that comes back. He was able to survive because Asch's body did not disappeared. Luke kept his promise to Tear.
I would believe it's Luke as well at the end. I assume this because the way, Tear smiles at the end when she sees him. This game took time to get into, but it was worth the patience. Good thing.

I'm positive that it's Luke. There's too many signs that point to it. For one the sword hilt is worn in the style that Luke had it, and the hilt if on the left hand side. Luke is left handed. Plus, Luke's hair was parted to the left and Asch's to the right, that matches too. Also, the selenias. They were there whenever Luke and Tear were together; I think it's symbolic of their relationship. Plus, Tear never cried in front of anyone BUT Luke. Only his reappearance could cause those tears.
Actually it's only one year after the final battle when Luke's and Asch's coming of age ceremony takes place. It's explained on the wikia that the entire storyline took two years in total. So it's still a small possibility that Asch and Luke really did merge together or something... See this is why ToA needs a sequel to explain the ending better.

Despite some holes in the programming, this is surely one hell of a game. I finished it a few days ago, after around 60 hours of playing, and it really confirm my thought of "Tales" being the best RPG saga I've ever played, since Phantasia to this one.

No, personally I believe it is just Luke at the end. In game, there is a book that talks about the stages in a Kimlascen's life. The coming of age ceremony is preformed when the person reaches 20 years old. Luke is only 17 in the main story, so it's right to assume that this is 3 or 4 years after he disappears. I think anyone would have long hair by then =P

And it can't be Asch, even though he made a promise once, that was directed at Natalia, so Asch would have said that to Natalia and not Tear. And finally he had the same hairstyle as Luke in the beginning, so it would make sense if it's Luke and not Asch. But that is just what I think, because I want him to be Luke!!
Century,the whole game it explained how though Luke was asch's replica,the two were totally different people.the old Luke fon fabre transformed into the new asch and just Luke was a whole different person,who cast aside the illusionary Luke fon fabre that was technically no more.

i just now saw it. but luke/asch's sword is turned towards the left side of the body. this might mean that it is mostly luke's lefty side that rules over asch's right side.
I wish you could get the clothes luke wears at the end as a costume... Still, TotA had a wonderful story and a satisfying end. what could you want more?
No...... it's so perfect. I don't want them to make a sequel. Remake perhaps, but I'd hate a TotA Sequel. Prequel has potential though... TotA is easily one of my favorite games.

I agree with this. When Asch fell into Luke's arms, they merged to create one complete human being...not just an "original" and a "replica"...but one as a whole. We just don't know what name Mr. Ending goes by.
Why do people get into naming wars in relation to this? Both of these two people were always legally "Luke Fon Fabre". "Asch The Bloody" is just a stage name meant to conceal his past. All of the God-Generals except Arietta had stage names used for that reason, and even Arietta is implied to not be doing it only because nobody actually knows Arietta's "true name".. Apparently Namco was going to have them kiss, but then they were like UHH NO WE WANT THE PLAYER TO DECIDE so instead we get mooned.

Luke isn't that easy to kill. Those people who thought he was dead were just jerks. You know, any hero/heroine isn't easy to kill. Luke proves that.
