- Harrison Butker is facing backlash following his controversial commencement speech. The Kansas City Chiefs kicker spoke at Benedictine College’s graduation ceremony on May 11, where he talked about a range of topics including reproductive issues, women’s roles in the home and Pride Month. At one point he even referenced Taylor Swift’s song “Bejeweled.” While he didn’t mention her by name, he brought up the lyric while condemning the actions of religious leaders. He then went on to speak about the roles he believes women should play in the home and encouraged men to be “unapologetic in your masculinity.” He also called out Pride Month, calling it a “deadly sin sort of pride.” Neither Taylor nor her boyfriend, Harrison’s teammate Travis Kelce, have spoken out on his speech. His use of the Grammy winner’s lyrics raised some eyebrows as she has often used her platform to champion women and LGBTQ rights over the years.

People get so offended by anything these days. He was speaking Catholic values at a Catholic college and got a standing ovation, and he's never been shy about being a devout Catholic. As a working woman i am not at all offended by anything he said and I value his opinions, as he is entitled to them and I believe he comes from a genuine place of good faith. We don’t need to be offended to speak up about dangerous “opinions”. As a respected athlete, different young men will look up to him and propagate whatever mentality their role models rant about. This is the same mentality that has been keeping women oppressed, the same mentality that has ben limiting the professional opportunities of women, the same mentality that spreads that “ a woman without kids is not as valuable as one with kids”, that a woman’s career is not as significant as a man’s career. That’s why it is important to give focus to freeing voices and opinions. His mentality and opinions just look to strengthen previously imposed limitations on women
