I AM ONE OF THE PEOPLE! ALL OF MY CLASSMATES ARE HAPPY CRYING TODAY! Thanks for making this video, I feel like I can read and hear it enough, doesn't feel real. I had $90,000 in loans from attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
Yo! Another person from the art institute of Pittsburgh. I've been struggling for the past 5 years since I graduated in 2018 to make ends meet. The moment I saw this when I woke up Wednesday I couldn't help but shed some tears.
@@autobot117 Right there with you me as well I graduated in 2011 kept making payments and my loans were going no where! I thought at first the email was a fake when i first read it.
When I woke up, checked my phone, and saw the email, I never jumped out of bed so fast. Graduated in 2014, and am so relived that this will finally be gone soon. My original loan was $120,000, and paid 60-70 thousand into it between me and my mom. The Current amount owed together now, is $183,000. With this being gone soon, I'll have full control over my life, and with some budgeting, and personal road maps, i'll be debt free all together in my adult life for the first time. Even my mom will be happy as she helped me with these loans. I'm so excited, and feel like I can truly start living now. Sucks my Degree is basically unless, but at least this nightmare will be over. I wish the rest of my fellow AI classmates a celebratory cheers!
Your degree is still valid you can receive an electronic transcript from them despite the school being shut down. You will also receive a full refund soon on the payments made towards that loan.
I will not as a minority vote for another white person so no thanks. The current racist we have in office is on video for saying that intregrated bussing will lead to a “racial jungle”. Sometimes whites slip and say how they feel. Never again will I would for one.
Attended A.I. between 2013 and 2016. Half way through they got hit with their first lawsuit which completely cut the staff in half. Lost the only good instructors we had. We were given the option of relocating to another location or having the year get “taught out” by unqualified instructors. (Mostly former students who couldn’t get jobs in their fields either.) Was an absolute disaster and have spent the last 9 years feeling completely burned and set back by my choice to attend. Today was a shock, but a welcome one.
I went to the Houston campus from 2011-2014 so I was there when all this madness went down. Yes, we also lost the good instructors and had to deal with professors who barely taught anything! Do you remember when they got rid of all of the advisors at the campus and only had phone advisors available at their corporate office? That was the biggest mistake they made! It angered the entire student body because it took the personalization out of getting assistance.
@@christiangonzales7429 Yep, first it was the advisors and extra staff, but then overnight it was almost everyone. For about 4 weeks we were told that our campus was closing and we’d need to relocate to the Arizona campus. At the time I wouldn’t have been able to afford the move or the housing so for a short period I thought I was just going to have to drop out. They eventually offered to teach out the existing students through 2017, but the instructors that came in for this were former students. (Some even being graduates from that same year.) Over half of the campus was closed down, most classes were reduced to only 5-6 students. Was a horrendous situation, but at that point I felt I had already made such a big investment that I at least needed to get my degree to have something to show for it.
@@williamfajardo7415 I have had several conversations with Nelnet since this was announced. The forgiveness only extends to those with remaining federal loan balances that were taken during the allocated bracket of time. (2004-2017) These do extend to Federal parent plus loans, but not to any private loans at all. Only your federal loans are being discharged. The total accumulated amount that you have paid to your federal loan balances since they were conceived is being refunded (but as far as I understand - only if they have a remaining balance at the time of the discharge being finalized.) this includes interest and overcharges as well. As of now - my federal loans have all been placed in Administrative Forbearance and I can no longer make payments on them. Their ‘current balance’ all read $0.00, but the ‘total loan balances’ are still present as of 5/15/2024. I received a letter directly to my nelnet account on 5/13/2024 requiring me to call them and verify all of my contact information and address information was correct for the refund. They told me that after finalizing my info - the refund would be sent between 2 days and 2 months. I haven’t heard anything back since.
It was way less than 57% of students getting jobs within 6 months after graduation. I distinctly remember for every 10 students that graduated, 2-3 got jobs relatively in their fields, and even then they were not exactly secured, lasting jobs
They are definitely canceling other loans. I got an email yesterday! My entire $210,000 was forgiven, which included my undergrad, my graduate and the loan I took out for my daughter! Mine wasn't Art School, but because I've been paying on mine for 25 years. I feel like I lost a 100 pounds and hit the lottery in one day. This was my only debt besides a $3,000 credit card, which I will begin applying my student loan payments to in order to erase that debt. I feel like I got a 2nd chance at life.
I'm one of those folks they screwed over and I hope to hear back from this. My college actually shut down during my final year and the program meant to help us find jobs was one of the first programs to go away leaving us with nothing to help try to get a job in the field.
And would you believe I thought the only lie they told me in 2009 is I would have my own room in the dorm. I walked in and there were 4 twin beds in a 1br apartment and I was pissed, it definitely took a toll on my mental health. This $50,000 discharge feels good. God is truly amazing.
I can't seem to find any answers for my question. Would my loans from navient be forgiven? I know mostly federal forgiveness does not apply to private loans. Since there was a proven lawsuit do I have any way to get it forgiveness.
This is SO UNREAL! I always felt conned after I graduated AiA (The Art Institute of Atlanta). Thank YOU for further explaining this! This is life-changing.

No one is addressing students that started before the January 1 2004 date but were students after Jan 1. I have two degrees from AI. Started in 2003 & graduated in 2005 with an associate degree. I went back a year later to get my bachelor's degree & graduated in 2008. I have heard nothing. Why were they not more clear on this? It's impossible to get anyone on the phone.
I’m in the same boat and gut wrenched. Literally started at AI September of 2003, who the hell starts in January?! lol impossible to get answers and it’s been stressing me out
Same as you all... I started july 03 to march 09. When I called my service provider (navient) the gal I spoke with was under the impression that it would be based on loan disbursement dates. It gave me hope I qualify but without an email or a way to confirm with the ED, i'm overly anxious about this. Really hope we all get the relief we need!
That is what I am hearing, but the wording in some of the articles is not clear. Kind of a bum deal to not take care of those who actually worked hard to pay their loans off.
@@branscoset I was on the phone with the department of education for a couple of hours trying to get an answer but they just kept transferring me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see
Not sure. The loan forgiveness now is more specific because a lawsuit from the Home Depot CEO and a ruling by the Supreme Court said it was too much. Two years ago they were talking about tuition compensation, which would have included people who paid it off. Unfortunately, that's been dropped because of the lawsuit.
Has anyone started getting refunds yet? My story is the same as everyone else. I graduated in 2008 and owe more today than I borrowed, six figures. My servicer won't answer questions. They only say, you'll get it, when you get it. They also didn't stop my payments, I had to apply for forbearance to get them to move. Feel skeptical this will actually happen so just wondering what the time frame is for anyone else.
Happy for a lot of people. I ended up finding a job with a AI degree that allowed me to qualify for PSLF. I just made my 120 payments but because Mohela didn't have them together only some of them would've been forgiven. This was nice to make things easy. Cheers
Stumbled on to this, had a friend who Attended Art Center College of Design and he's still paying for his loans. Think it's over 20 years. 60k if I remember correctly, not sure where he's at from that. It's mad.
For anyone who paid their loans and was wondering WHAT ABOUT ME...this bill was originally supposed to include tuition compensation for people who spent their savings and paid out of pocket or managed to pay off their loans with these predatory schools. But a lawsuit from Bernie Marcus' "Job Creators Network" nonprofit and a block by the 8th Circuit Court stopped that because they felt the original plan was too broad and far-reaching, a ruling supported by the Supreme Court. So if you're feeling like you've been left out, that's who to be pissed off with. I'm sorry, bros, we could have been all celebrating together. But we gotta be happy for those who did get help, hope this does good shit to the economy, and hold our grudges for the people who managed to specifically screw us over.
You should contact your loan lender and see what they say. In my opinion, ANYONE who was affected by their practices should have their loans discharged. They LIED about so much!
@@christiangonzales7429 indeed! Thanks. I need to contact someone for sure. I’ve been praying for something like this and they missed my window by 2 years. There’s gotta be something I can do.
It looked too good to be true. Always do your due diligence when opening any emails because a lot of them are scams. Always check to see who sent them. If the email address didn't come from studentloans. gov it is fake!
Bittersweet for those of us who have the Navient private loans. I got my letter but am still obligated to pay Sallie Mae because my state (TX) chose not to participate in the class action against them. Some relief is worth celebrating though! Side note: A.I. was wild a wild time! Their "Job Placement" was a contact form on their website for small businesses to request student services. They didn't vet the businesses AT ALL, the just picked your name out a hat I guess. Got matched with this predatory company who stiffed me for the work I did and scammed me out a check. A.I. provided no protection as I was harassed and humiliated by someone they connected me to.
What about when they transfered students to Sanford Brown deceivingly!! They did that to me and wasn't even the degree or field I wanted to pursue!! What if I didn't get the email but was mislead by who was instructing me online??
Hi, thank you for the updates and words of wisdom. I have a question. Where can I find the loan evaluation too you mentioned that helps loan recipients understand why their loans have not been forgiven. Thanks for all you do
So what if our loans are in transition to direct consolidation? Will they be processed for forgiveness after direct consolidation is complete? Also, if the government is admitting to fraud by Art institutes/Sallie Mae/Navient then why are the "private" education loans many were tricked into under the guise of Educational loans, often labeled as signature student loans, not also forcibly discharged?
Has anyone else consolidated their AI loans? Mine are consolidated into one huge dept of Ed loan and the representative said this may be why I haven't gotten my email yet. Trying to see if anyone else is in the same boat....
I thought I didn't get the email but I did. I had to search for it tho. I think it was in my updates folder in gmail. So yes, consolidated loans are eligible too.
its been 4 months since I received the letter, but still have a balance and have to make payments. Is there anything I can do to get this resolved? Does this also refund paid off parent plus loan?
What if someone enrolled in early 2017 but didn't graduate until the end of 2018? Would all of the AI govt tuition loans be forgiven or just the 2017 tuition loan? Some campuses remained open after they were sold in 2017.
I graduated from IA Tampa 09, but i havent received an email and my email is up to date. I paid off my fed loan but is listed as Sanford-brown College... and the majority of my balance is private loans 😢.
My email said a possible refund check but it doesn’t say for how far back I’ve paying since 2012 on my IBR then paused 2020-21 then back on payments 2022 and on
I keep checking for an email but, I didnt finish school, I only attended part time for a year. My loans are less than 10,000, and my federal returns were taken to pay it off. Is it possible that I would not qualify.
It's for students who attended any AI campus from 2004-2014 and took out federal loans. This may not apply if you attended before the years mentioned, transferred to another school, took out private loans or consolidated. It's best to speak with someone from studentaid.gov
I hope they consider Le' Cordon Bleu students because they were listed at Predatory Lenders. We were told all kinds of stuff about our daughter's career and the help she'd receive etc.
So I also received an email which was great but I have a question, is it for all loans taken out to attend ai? Because I also have loans labeled private so I hope those are included. I know that no private loans that were taken to attend schools under ai will not be forgiven? Please clarify and thanks!!
How will they contact us? I never received an email from them. I paid off the loan completely last year and want to know when I will get my money refunded.
Has anyone received an email that had all their loans already paid off? Trying to not get my hopes up but if they're offering refunds then it should include fully paid off loans as well right?
I paid off the last of my loans last month, April 4th (I believe). I got the email as well. I am concerned because I don't know how they are determining who to send the letter to, if they are surveying loan balances from greater than 30 days or just anyone. I've spoken to multiple representatives from StudentAid.Gov and my loan servicer and the consensus is that normally paid off loans don't apply, but the case of the Art Institute is different. No one has a definitive answer and said to be patient as more information comes out. My loan servicer said they receive the notice hardly sooner than we do, so they are scrambling for details as well. However, multiple reps have told me that they are leaning to the idea that paid off loans will be refunded. This is all speculation though. I hope some of this helped as we both wait in limbo.
Yeah it’s kind of a weird situation. The wording on the emails and the press release definitely makes it sound like everything will be refunded but the description for borrower defense sounds more like paid off loans don’t qualify. This is definitely more of a special case scenario, that school was an absolute joke and I was totally unaware any litigation was ongoing until I heard about the recent news a few days ago. Wish I would have known about it all sooner before I paid off my loans 🫤.
I went to AI from 2008-2012, I left the school with maybe 36k loans but I managed to pay them off by living at my moms and sending my whole paycheck at them in about 4 years. So i paid mine off already in 4ish years. Anyone have any idea if I am getting anything back even with mine already paid off? I have not gotten any emails or anything and my records might already have been removed. Would be neat to be getting a check...
I work without degree in the field in which I work. And every year I see more and more requirements for a degree, even for the simplest positions, since the number of university graduates is growing every year and this dictates the emergence of such a requirement. And now I find out that the goverment will pay my competitors for the taxes that I have been paying regularly all these years so that they can take my place? If we're talking about fairness for everyone, I'm entitled to a refund of my taxes.
What if Uncle Sam came and took your taxes immediately when taxes dropped? Will we be able to get that money back? They took it to put toward the student loan :/
DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO PROCESS YOUR DISCHARGE? i CALLED AIDADVANTAGE AND THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OF THE LOAN FORGIVENESS YET?
I had applied for it because the recruiter told me over and over, that I could attend, he said "Sure, you don't need to be able to physically draw to get in, digital drawing works fine" It was all bullshit and lies, I went for 2 years doing Gen Ed shit, and the first drawing class I had, they kicked me out saying "You need to be able to draw" But the government shouldn't pay for it, I'm hoping the art institute is fully on the hook for it.
The Art Institute isn't even in business anymore. Whoever assumed all of their debts and liabilities would end up inheriting that. But I agree with you, they defrauded a lot of people and they should be able to pay.
looking back on it my first red flag was being sold the program and asking my salesperson so how do i submit my portfolio and bro literally told me i didn’t need one but if i wanted to send it it’s fine

What if you already payed off your AI student loan in full?
I attended 98-02 and these practices were the same then. Anything I can do?
You should contact your loan lender and see what they say. In my opinion, ANYONE who was affected by their practices should have their loans discharged. They LIED about so much!
@@christiangonzales7429 indeed! Thanks. I need to contact someone for sure. I’ve been praying for something like this and they missed my window by 2 years. There’s gotta be something I can do.
@@christiangonzales7429 The lenders don't care. They're still going to try and get their money until they're forced not to.
Same
Apply for borrower’s defense and select that you want your loans in forbearance for the decision phase so you don’t have to pay your loans right now.
So when is this happening? I have not got an email but attended from 2012-2015
i went from (2013-2015) also no email
Was getting ready for work when I saw the email. Almost thought it was spam lol
I got it at work early this morning.. thought it was spam too ..then I looked at the sender details & it started to become real to me. Effing Crazy !
It looked too good to be true. Always do your due diligence when opening any emails because a lot of them are scams. Always check to see who sent them. If the email address didn't come from studentloans. gov it is fake!
@@Sirch100precent who is the sender?
What about private loans?
Wife and I are getting 80k wiped.
For parents that paid off the loan and drained out their savings account will they get a refund too?
I believe so. But beware that the IRS may consider it all taxable income! Call your loan lender and ask questions.
Just got email. How long will the process take for the debt relief to take effect?
Damn, good to know. I attended in San Antonio back in 2011. Guess I’m still on the hook as well with Navient.
What about when they transfered students to Sanford Brown deceivingly!! They did that to me and wasn't even the degree or field I wanted to pursue!! What if I didn't get the email but was mislead by who was instructing me online??
I went to a similar school, I’m still waiting on mine.
Thanks for breaking this down. Super helpful!
I wonder if I will receive a refund for what I paid in. Went to Ai Atlanta. Ironically I just paid off my student loan this month.
How does this apply to the private loans that were also pulled under the art institutes?
Has anyone else consolidated their AI loans? Mine are consolidated into one huge dept of Ed loan and the representative said this may be why I haven't gotten my email yet. Trying to see if anyone else is in the same boat....
Mines are consolidaded too, didnt get the email yet. Did you figure out if the forgiveness will also apply to us?
I thought I didn't get the email but I did. I had to search for it tho. I think it was in my updates folder in gmail. So yes, consolidated loans are eligible too.
I went from 2000-2002 then back in 2004 for like 1 year. I just direct consolidated yesterday. Will that make it a problem?
its been 4 months since I received the letter, but still have a balance and have to make payments. Is there anything I can do to get this resolved? Does this also refund paid off parent plus loan?
I still haven't received an email :( do you suggest contacting? I went years of 2002 (?) to 2008...
What about private loans??
What if someone enrolled in early 2017 but didn't graduate until the end of 2018? Would all of the AI govt tuition loans be forgiven or just the 2017 tuition loan? Some campuses remained open after they were sold in 2017.
In terms of the refund, is it strictly just the principal, or both principal and interest being refunded?
I graduated from IA Tampa 09, but i havent received an email and my email is up to date. I paid off my fed loan but is listed as Sanford-brown College... and the majority of my balance is private loans 😢.
My email said a possible refund check but it doesn’t say for how far back I’ve paying since 2012 on my IBR then paused 2020-21 then back on payments 2022 and on
I keep checking for an email but, I didnt finish school, I only attended part time for a year. My loans are less than 10,000, and my federal returns were taken to pay it off. Is it possible that I would not qualify.
What about the private loans through Navient?
What if I had just paid off my loans 😢
Any updates on this? I'm still waiting for my loan amount to change.
Is it really for any Art Institute? Some news and articles is conflicting.
It's for students who attended any AI campus from 2004-2014 and took out federal loans. This may not apply if you attended before the years mentioned, transferred to another school, took out private loans or consolidated. It's best to speak with someone from studentaid.gov
What if my parents took out loans for me to attend here and have paid them back? Can I help them apply for a refund under this program?
I hope they consider Le' Cordon Bleu students because they were listed at Predatory Lenders. We were told all kinds of stuff about our daughter's career and the help she'd receive etc.
I must say, I am also very happy for all of the students who were included in this forgiveness. What a blessing!
Did you apply for Borrower’s Defense? That was on the list of schools for the Cardona v Sweet lawsuit.
From what I've been seeing from others, if you paid it off in full you don't qualify for a refund. Contact them to be sure!
I got a old fashioned letter in the mail!
@@thenewctc was it a refund letter?
@@TarahWolf thanks. That really sucks..
$60k gone! I’m so happy!
Who do we contact about this??
I paid off my loans from 2006-2008. Now I have some for nursing during the pandemic that are not forgiven. 🤔
will you be able to get a full refund ?
You should receive a refund soon according to my letter if you made any payments towards that loan a full refund will soon come
I graduated AI in 2004. Will I qualify???
2010 took out $20,000 now its 2024 and $26,000 balance
What if I attended 2017 but I graduated 2019 do I still qualify? Also, my school closed down 2021
And is there a list of schools that shows that who's qualify for the loan forgiveness?
@001Khy so does that mean I'm only qualify for some, not for the whole thing, because I took the loan from 2015 and graduated from 19
What about a parent plus loan taken to help graduate, would parents be eligible?
Yes they are! Thank God! If you are a parent, you should have gotten an email confirming this.
I hope so, I have yet to receive an email.
It will be in a separate email to the loan holder. My parent’s also received the email a few hours after I received mine.
So great to see you Mr Tate!!! 🫶🏽
Meh, I attended Platt College My forgiveness will be a stroke or heart attack

What's your favorite drink?
Duckfarts!
Most job requirements are actually "wants" and many list that experience is plenty equivalent to a degree. Apply to those jobs anyway!
I wonder if Full Sail University is next?
What if Uncle Sam came and took your taxes immediately when taxes dropped? Will we be able to get that money back? They took it to put toward the student loan :/
🎉🥳😭😭😭😭💯❤️🎉🎉🎉
Oh my gosh the amount of trauma from this whole experience was unbelievable. I cried and am so happy Justice is served!
Holy cow. I started in 2006 and now my debt is being wiped. Amazing!
same here
As long as it federal debt. Private not sure will apply
Don't forget to vote !
I got the letter just awaiting for it to actually be removed
How long did it take after they notified you? I got my letter now I’m waiting for it to be wiped?
Omg. I search for the email and its true!!! Whoooo! +😂+
What did you search for in your email?
Notice of Borrower Defense Discharge Approval is the subject line. However, I search for forgiveness and it pop up. 😊
I attended from 2006 to 2008, just got my email!!
Then the government should ensure all costs are reimbursed by that institution.
😭 I can't believe this is happening I'm so relieved.
Omg I have a new lease on life!!!
BRO SAME I FEEL GREAT TODAY!
DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO PROCESS YOUR DISCHARGE? i CALLED AIDADVANTAGE AND THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OF THE LOAN FORGIVENESS YET?
my brother just got his email, were very happy for him.
My son got his email today, and I the parent who I tookout the Parent Plus Loan for my son also received this email today.
Yes! My dad who had parent Plus also got his loans forgiven! It makes me feel so happy because I was so worried he'd end up stuck with what I didn't
Would be Awesome if we actually get a Refund too.
Where did the email come from?
From U.S. Department of Education @@johnkennedy3413
I started in September 2003 and graduated in 2007…. Do I qualify? I haven’t gotten an email
I started 03, grad 09. Have you gotten the email yet? I haven't...
I was 2002-2006 and haven’t received an email yet
