I’m an amateur extra radio operator as well as a Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot. I purchased a Yaesu FTA-450L airband transceiver recently to monitor air traffic while doing jobs in controlled airspace. Currently, there is no portion of the airband designated for use by the FCC for drone pilots except in emergencies where you are allowed to contact the tower only. For field use, I bought a 22-44 inch aftermarket antenna for transmit and receive. The stock “rubber duck” antennas that come with the unit are always a compromise because they use your body as the ground plane. I also have a HSY NMO magnetic mount 22” quarter wave for listening that goes on the top of the roof of the car when mobile or I can attach it to my steel patio cover at home at about 12 feet and get excellent reception or in an emergency I can also transmit unlike a discone, which is really designed for receive only scanners. Transceiver signal quality is almost exclusively based on antenna mounting height and quality of coax. At the bare minimum, a high quality RG8 or RG58 no more than 15’ is desired. Some antennas come with RG233 or RG 316 SMA which is extremely thin and subject to all kinds of interference.

It's nice to know they have the same voice across the world for the VOLMET broadcasts.
This is sort of an interesting test,but the discone isn't really a mobile aerial is it? The built in ground plane stubs are there for when you aren'r near a ground plane,such as the roof of a car.A magmount in the middle of the roof with the aerial cut for the middle of the VHF airband (about 128 MHz) would be more relevant here if you have access to something like this.
They use a male sounding voice in the UK.

Would the discone be a good all around antenna for sdr use? Im new to ham, tech licensed April 2020....taking my general this week, August 2020. I realize that a discone isnt really a good HF, but curious about overall usability
Yes, in my opinion the discone antenna would be good choice for SDR use, that's good idea.

Could you elaborate as to what brand and model that discone is. All I have found is the ones with only 1 verticle element. 73s.

Hi I'm assuming the clarity and stronger signal came from using the magmount discone antenna... Just purchased a uniden ubc125xlt and struggling on receiving anything.... Any advice greatly received.. Thanks..
This Uniden requires patience and quite a lot of manual reading, because working with it is nowhere near as intuitive as the Japanese Icom and Yaesu. That's why I use it very rarely, as you can see on my RUclips channel, and I also have several desktop scanners of the same brand - Uniden, which for the same reason are rarely used. For simple things like noise reduction level, bandwidth and modulation, you have to read the operating instructions every time, and that's not so easy when you have 10-15 scanners and many other radios. 🙂
So my advice would be - read the manual much more carefully than you originally intended, and have more patience than you would with any other device.

Здрасти! Yes, definitely, but you need roof or a balcony for better results - the higher placed the antenna the better.
Hi, I have this SONY AIR-8 receiver where I mainly monitor the airband frequency (118 MHz to 137 MHz) as I am a licensed private pilot. To better improve my reception, I want to install a good external antenna which I can install at a height of about 50 feet. Is there a DIY for the said antenna?
To be honest it was already long time ago and I cannot recall any information concerning this antenna anymore. Sorry I cannot be of help! 😇

Той зависи от тебе изцяло, но със сигурност трябва да съвпадне с този на самия приемник, а ако имаш няколко приемника с различни накрайници можеш да си ги купиш от Щайнбергер в центъра на София например.
Can you tell me, 1300 antenna. Its possible to use this antena indoor, on table? Or you need gound (vehicle roof). Thank you very much.

@@georgig Díky :) I have Uniden ubc355clt and with stock antenna its dead (only some PMR). I bought scyscan or somethink simmilar, looks like yours discone but only top part of your antenna with magnetic bottom base. Its better, but when I put my antenna through my window and suck with magnet on metal plate roof, reception is perfect. But for my instalation its not good solution. I think there is no chance only roof install, maybe metal roof is something like Faraday cage. What do you think? :)
