  • Amazon’s latest hit, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, won big at the 2018 Critics Choice and Golden Globes, taking home awards for best TV series (musical or comedy) and - for star Rachel Brosnahan - best actress in a TV series (musical or comedy).
Brosnahan stopped by 92Y with co-star Michael Zegen, who plays her estranged husband Joel, for a candid conversation about this smart, funny, timely show. Find out what it takes to play a 1950s New York City wife and mother who risks it all to make it in the male-driven world of stand-up comedy - and why this period story is more relevant now than ever.
Recorded on March 1, 2018 at the 92nd Street Y.

This interview is interesting, the interviewer obviously has a lot of insight into the characters, but... she's asking actors about the characters as though they ARE the characters and not actors playing parts that are written for them.

This is exactly what I was thinking! You can sense the awkwardness in their faces and their responses as they look nervously at each other. I kept thinking "how are they supposed to know? Only Amy Sherman-Palladino could answer those questions".

Why ask the actors. Why wouldn’t she ask the writers. Wouldn’t they have a better insight.

    • @ebae86
      @ebae86 4 года назад +1

Exactly! I kept thinking, she should be asking Amy Sherman-Palladino these specific questions. The actors are just playing the characters! I felt so bad for them to try to answer the questions.

    Spoiler Alert
I love the character of Joel in the show. Yes, he did mess up his life badly but he was lost. And it is very real and human to me. Then he tried his best to find himself, such as working hard to fix the family business while taking care of kids, punching the manager who didn't pay Midge, speaking up at the resort on behalf of the family and supporting her with her career choice at the family dinner, even he didn't want to be the topic of her comedy (fair enough).
While we blame on Joel cheated on the Midge, we seem to forget that Midge cheated on her finance, Ben.
Comparing this Joel and Midge, I found Joel spend a bit more time with the kids then Midge.
The scene when Joel was drunk and begged for forgiveness really touched my heart.
Anyway, just want to share that I think the character Joel was well written and acted out.

      Becky, I completely disagree!
Don't get me wrong, I really like the show and this interview was very interesting and entertaining, but for me the way you and Alex and Rachel and Michael see Joel is absolutely naive. He is just an inmature, spoiled jerk. He lives a very good life: he has a well paid, secure job, he has a wonderful wife and two healthy children, but is he happy? No, he's crying like a little boy because his unrealistic dreams didn't come true. That's not just inmature, that's f...ing ridiculous! I don't wanna say that he's a bad guy, but he's also not a good guy. Maybe in five or ten years he could become a grown-up, but now he's just a whiny boy pretending to be a man.

Alex, something to consider: you have two ears and one mouth; use them in that ratio. The result will be far more interesting for your listeners. Most of us are probably more keen to hear what the actors have to say. It's great that you're enthusiastic but you're not the star.

The interviewer clearly prepared to interview Midge and Joel instead of Rachel and Michael. After 5 minutes, I can accept that, even though it certainly hurts the interview. But when audience (and probably staff) repeatedly try to save the whole evening by relieving the interviewer of her job by moving on to audience questions and she simply goes on interviewing (in her mind) Midge and Joel, it starts to hurt again... In a perfect world, she'd have gotten the many, many, many clues at some point, but sadly we're not in a perfect world. Minute 39: Fiiiiiiiiiiiinally.

Honestly, I remembered the during Midge and Joel's era was the era of neglectful parents. Those children, in the end, become helicopter parents of our era as a reaction to that behavior. I mean, look at "Mad Men."

G, the pressure on modern parents! Midge is at home with the kids all day. I think it's okay to leave them with the grandparents for an errand or a nightout. That doesn't make Michael or Midge bad parents!
