I posted a long comment a few days ago, and would like to clarify a couple of things! This was a very joyful celebration! Certain aspects of this wedding were not traditional Islamic, compared to my own, and others I’ve witnessed! However, I don’t see that it was anti-Islamic in any way! Some of the celebrations included music and dancing, which some practitioners would find faulty!
***Circumcision of male converts to Islam, is only required in certain cases, and not immediate, generally! I stand corrected on that!
However, conversion was required of Thermiotis as part of the engagement agreement, because both Islam and Orthodox Christianity require that the wife “obey” her husband. And some directive might be objectionable.***
Islam is a social system, similar in many respects to Orthodox Judaism! It includes guidelines for day to day living, and there are many variations to the practice of these! An example is restrictions on physical contact between the non-blood-related persons. Some do not allow hand-shaking, or greeting by cheek-kissing or a brief embrace, while others do. Another is outdoor dress attire. Requirements for strict hair covering for women, while some add full face-covering, or partial face covering, while others only require a loose scarf draped over the head and shoulders. Ideally, loose-fitting female garments are to promote modesty and protection in Islamic cultures. But there is great leeway from community to community in the adherence to these regulations!
In Saudi Arabia, regulations are very lax in Riyadh, the capital, while in Mecca and the countryside, there are enforcement officers who go around with switches after women who are not properly “covered”. Keeping track of these widely varying restrictions is difficult for anyone unfamiliar with them!
While most comments have been quite supportive, many have been judgmental and even unkind!
Having previously been on the receiving end of such negativism, I would like to wish for this couple and their families, ALL the blessings of the ever compassionate, all merciful God!

As a female Muslim convert, I can attest to the fact that conversion from Christianity to Islam is very difficult! I’ve read that the Arab world was rife with objections to the marriage of Princess Iman to a Greek financier, convert or not!
The tradition is that a Muslim woman must not be wed to a Christian man. Often, in the case of prominent people, a claim of conversion will be made, while it is “just for show”. I believe that the greatest impediment to conversion in the case of an adult Christian male, is the requirement that he be circumcised! (Depending on how and where it is performed, that can be a very unpleasant and even dangerous experience)!
There were some astonishing posts online about the couple sitting under blossoming trees, reading passages from the Koran, as part of their wedding! Koranic reading is only considered valid in Arabic! So I doubt that story, also. Reports were that the ceremony both was and was not a traditional Muslim wedding! GO FIGURE! So, the fact that no one from Thermiotis’ family participated in the ceremony may mean that he remained a non Muslim, at least at the time of the wedding.
It’s really very sad! He went through the receiving line at Hussein and Rajwa’s wedding, and kissed her quickly on both cheeks! The look on her face was one of horror, while her new husband looked like a reverse honor killing was in order! There are strict religious regulations governing which men and women are allowed to have any or precisely what physical contact, and that was one of the forbidden ones! Also, from one community to the next, there are differences! So you just never know!
Poor couple, I say, it’s really very sad! I hope they can work it out!

He said that he is a Muslim and they got married in an Islamic marriage. It is impossible for that to happen if he did not declare his conversion to Islam. It is not our job to judge him.
