    One major engine damage job that always stuck with me was from my Gas compression days. We went to a L7042GSI at some gas plant that had dropped a valve. Well it had smashed up the piston so bad it contaminated all the other cylinders on that bank. For context, this is a 115 litre V12 twin turbo natural gas engine with around a 9 or 10” Bore.
    Well it had beat the Liner so bad it broke in several places and was expanded so it was now bigger than the top liner fit in the block, meaning it isn’t just gonna come out the top like it normally would. It took me and another guy almost all day to hammer and chisel enough chunks out of the “jigsaw” to where we could remove the liner from the block. Meanwhile the rest of the crew, 4 more guys if I remember correctly, removed all 5 of the other heads, cleaned up the debris and replaced 2 damaged liners and piston assembly’s and we had her good as new, smashing gas as happy as can be!

  • @peteengard9966
    @peteengard9966 Год назад +10

    My old company had a fleet of MXS engines. Everyone one of them broke rocker arms at one time. Then the latest ones broke the cat brake/ iva housings. Usually the 5-6 broke first then a little while later the other 2 would crack. We always had problems with those IVA connectors. They sucked for the randomness of the connector failure.

  • @johngoldsmith6629
    @johngoldsmith6629 Год назад +6

    IVA studs general fail from excessive engine brake usage. Most of the time the failure starts on cylinders 2, 4 or 6 first and work towards the front. Seen a few pedestal snapped off. The extra ladder clips was a add on in the field that Cat said to do to stop IVA connectors from breaking. First head I pulled off a SDP took way to long. So much extra components to R & I. The line on the back of the head is a tube and I actual made a fixture to bolt on the head so it goes back in the same place. It has a clamp that bolts to the rear cover. Best to replace all the IVA studs as it starts the clock over again. It is a pain but every few years when a over head is needed. Best to pull the IVA's and check bolt torque. If they are loose, replace them. Does not hurt to replace rear stud as they are usually first ones to loosen up. When I have a IVA stud failure, ALL the hardware on that set gets replaced. Nuts, bolts, everything. They have been operating not torqued and abnormal stress was added to the hardware.
    A few years ago a truck driver came in and told me what is truck was doing, it was a SDP. I said you have a hole in your valve cover from a broken IVA stud failure. He replied that his valve cover was OK. Then he came back and told me he had a hole in it.
    On a MXS, seen a few failure's so severe and with the metal valve cover. All the valve cover bolt rubber grommets was missing. The impact was trying to drive the valve cover off and finally the grommets busted and fell off.
    Now the big question. What does SDP stand for? You got a a project, if you can get a head.

    Pulled an sdp one night for overhead noise, expecting a as you say fairly typical Iva stud issue, the foreman told the driver to wait in the lounge. I pulled the valve cover found the studs pulled the Iva housing and boom! Broken pedestal exactly like that. Needless to say I told the boss the driver might want to start shopping motels. We hated the sdp’s, constant ard updates, no more popping off an easy valve cover for an Iva solenoid, cat must have all of sudden forgot how to make water pumps because they leaked out the weep hole and they were nice enough to bury it under a mile of tubes hoses pre cooler this cgi that.

    Your cat filter shenanigans are funny. Reminds me of a time I was at a shipper and they had the cab up on a yard jockey that wouldn't start.
    I walked over like I knew what I was doing as a few of them were looking at it, told them I knew exactly what their issues was, started pointing at different parts of the engine.
    "Here, here and here, this engine has red paint all over it and its not yellow, that's your problem right there"
    They busted up for quite a while.

    Root cause analysis would start with was that a result of the damage or the cause.
    All metal castings have impurities and inclusions in them. Look for an Initiation point.
    I couldn't see any of the Fractures on the fasteners or casting up close but my impression is.
    One side of the casting Fracture appeared to be smooth indicating it was Cyclic or that way for awhile.
    The other side looked like a Fast Brittle,Ductile fracture.
    The Cam looked ok and is still retained by what's left of the casting and bearing.
    Could the Damage to fasteners and components all be Related to the Casting failure?

Just put a new head on it today. poor engineering design. you should have known better when it came in with a broken oil bridge. our 2 c15s both broke rocker shafts and bolts. i would highly recomend replacing the bolts at 300k to avoid these problems. if any bolt is loose or broken replace the shafts if it didnt damage the head. once one rocker shaft bolt breaks it can ruin the head. or you may be able to cheat it. the shaft will eat into the pedestal saddle. you wont know its broke till you tear it down.

    💩 cheaper in the long run to put a platinum kit in and call it a day. But you might find other surprises when you do that. You are right when you started that up it did not sound right. To me that might be the only way to actually fix the engine correctly.

    Some horiffic findings. Got to wonder if the last person in there did not properly torque some fasteners, or what. What the hell causes a pedestal failure like that? Brutal damage.

    There is no such thing as a surprise when working on equipment.
    Anything can happen at any moment.
    God only knows who had their incompetent fingers in that engine before you.
    Everybody is a mechanic until... they aren't.
    Here's the test after any engine rebuild - start out in Wheat Ridge, CO., and run I-70 all the way across (west) to where I-70 intersects with I-15 south of Salt Lake City. That's ~500 miles! Run that going to Cali or anywhere and then run it back again (eastbound) to Wheat Ridge, CO. Make that round trip continually for 90 days. That will test an engine rebuild. Most will fail... at least 75%!
    But, of course, the guy who did the rebuild said: "I can do that. It'll be fun and if it fails, it's not my money."
    Very few people understand the intricacies of a complete engine overhaul... very few! Very few can comprehend that details matter! "Good enough" is never good enough!
    On this particular engine, the "white" filter is all I needed to see; that tells the entire story! And then, of course, the added parts on the top of that engine! Why not? "It should work." "We'll just add a few extra parts and that should make it last longer." A torque wrench? "Nooooooo, don't need that." Idiots!
    Good job, Adept Ape. You definitely understand the importance of details. Keep 'em coming. 👍👍👍👍

      6NZ you have to update the rocker arm bolts, if you have a Jacobs brake. Pac brake cannot do the update. I replace them in any engine if the customer will let me. 5EK thru BXS.

      No excessive engine brake usage, loosens up rear stud first, (most of the time). As stud gets loose, load is applied causing studs toward the front to loosen. Eventually they start breaking.

    I got a problem with a c7 and idk where else to go I can’t seem to figure it out. Truck starts up fine when cold. Warms up and it dies won’t turn start back up. Just crank no start. I also notice a noise will go away before I crank the engine. The noise is a long fluttering clicking noise. That noise goes away when the engine won’t start back up. Not to sure what that is. Any advice from anyone to figure out what I should be looking at? I did watch the video on the heui pump but seems like everything checks out with right pressure.

      We also did change ecm and heui pump to be 100% certain and it still does the same thing.
