- Today in the blacksmith shop we will forge a scribe from a piece of garage door spring. I will start with a very brief discussion of various option for making layout marks on your iron work. Then it's on to straightening the coil spring to make the scribe

Once a Fireman always a Fireman. Keep up the good work
Yes everybody; remember your woodworking buddies😁✌
This might be one of the first projects I try :D
Man it’s awesome to see you again, I grew up watching your show Mythbusters on discovery channel! Between you and me I always thought you were funnier than Adam lol the walrus returns
hallo ime i fitter and turner from south africa . that clutch pencil you have works very well if you insert an apprpopriat size tungston tig welding tip .. it is the most acurit and it lasts the longest so to me its worth it . thanks for all the good content you put out ive lernt alot . sory about my spelling
That is a very good idea
Thanks for an informative video
Always a pleasure my friend.
Thank you. I also appreciate you reminding us of safety when we are throwing sparks not to do it when it's dry.
Yes, a guy up the road from me burned his garage down by welding sparks getting away from him, western Colorado, hot dry summer.
Beyond your fantastic videos, I appreciate the amount of time you spend replying to so many specific comments & questions.
I do try to read all of the comments, Thanks for noticing.
I agree with Scott, John your responses and answers are greatly appreciated
I love your videos!
Another great video. Like the fact that you made the scribe and then twisted it with the twisting wrench you made in the last video.
Work With Nature thanks
Hey John, interesting to watch you work on the scriber. Easy to see your experience showing. Enjoyable video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm all over this
I am going to make one of these tomorrow.
Thank you Sir. Fine looking scribe and a very helpful video. Even if I didn't use it that much it would still look grand hanging on a hook in my garage. Great job. Stay safe.
You make the most useful videos. Thanks a lot dude.
You're welcome
Great stuff John!
thanks again mate....good work
Another great video John, can't wait to get in the garage tomorrow. :)
I believe it to be, A great tool for just about anybody who does any type of work! From hobbyist, to blacksmithing! Watching your video's highlights just how bad that I need to build both, A garage, & a shop though, I also want a third separate space for reloading.... Maybe one day? It would have to be soon before, Tyrannical politicians completely outlaw everything 2a...You have very nice anvil! I am envious!!! Nice!!! I always give you a thumbs up & love your video's!!! Thank you!!!
Great little project. Good to build other skills and techniques.
I just had an interesting idea while watching this. Remember when John made two fullers(one flat, one left round), using the outside race from a bearing? What would it look like if you made a twist and then used a fuller in the middle of a twist? 🤔🤔🤔
Good Morning , John
A great project , Because it is a Needed Item ! Simple , but Very Nice looking ! Thank you for sharing ! An addition to my
TO DO LIST ! Take Care and Be Safe ! Keep Hammering !
I want one, be a few weeks before I get to it, too many other things going right now but I will get there, thanks John
I was just think about trying to make one of these. I like the wavey twist so t think I will try that.
Nice little project. I’m going outside right now to make one. Thanks again John for another great video .... Paul..
Making it from mild steel and welding a Tucson tip on it.
Very good video, I will definitely make one, store bought one's are not big enough in diameter
Maybe THIS will be my first project? AFTER my tongs😳😳 building my forge today!! Looking for an anvil or a viable substitute🤩🤩🤩 WAITING IS THE HARD PART!!! ❤️🇺🇸
Waiting is hard, but sometimes gives you a big jump by waiting for better equipment instead of settling
Thanks for all of your vids, I appreciate every one of them. Can you possibly discuss your dust collection system that you have?
Thanks.
I have been putting it off because it isn't 100% finished. But I probably should do a video about it anyway.
That scribe with a slightly rounder ball point would be excellent for leather tooling.
I really like your videos and the way, you explain, what you and why you do things the way you do. When you mention other videos, how about a link in the video? Might turn out useful ☺
I am really interested in videos of making tools from start to finish. Looking forward to see more of that kind of content.
Kind greetings from Germany
I do try to put links in to most of the videos I comment on. They should appear in the top right of your screen. I have a playlist for tool making ruclips.net/video/vpvelW2PEwk/видео.html
I like it....bet you could sell a bunch of them.
I would buy one.
making one now
There is a scribe in the end of that combo action square
What is your opinion on carbide-tipped scribes?
I own a stump grinder with tungsten carbide tipped teeth, plus a bunch of old skil & miter saw blades that all have the small carbide tips, and it seems like brazing one of those carbide tips onto a scribe like you're making would work really well, at least in my brain anyway... 😂
👏👏👏
I'd sure appreciate it if I can use all your tools
Hi, John! I'm looking into making a scribe. I have a piece of 3/8"rebar... would that work, do you think, or isn't rebar hardenable?
Re bar has more carbon than mild steel, but there are lots of varieties. All I can say is give it a try and if it doesn't work your only out a few hours work
My railroad track anvil horn tends to rombus my squares when I try drawing them out, constantly have to correct it before drawing more out, is my horn to thin? Or is it because of the horns taper?
I have watched many of your videos and have learned a great deal from them. One thing I don't think I have ever seen in your videos is you wearing green tinted glasses. Before I started wearing glasses, about 20 years ago, I would from time to time work with a cutting torch and wear green tinted safety glasses. Do you ever wear them or would you rather not for a reason I am not aware of?
If i am cutting or welding with the torch I use a #5 tinted face shield.
Please tell us how to determine if salvaged stock should be oil or water hardened
I describe it in this video if I remember correctly ruclips.net/video/-1xRm0QqYW4/видео.html&lc=Ugx_TnOIUkU3Ve4GMQt4AaABAg Basically you heat it and allow it to air cool and see if it got hard, test with a file. If not, then heat and oil quench, did it get hard. if not heat it and water quench, did it get hard? That only gives you an idea and you will still need to experiment with exact temperatures.
First pic of scribe was a different twist, was it a double twist?
Fred Rivard good eyes. That was one made previously. It has a reverse twist that changes direction 4 times.
Thanks for reply back, would like to know more about the reverse twist.
here is a link to the most recent video on the reverse twist. ruclips.net/video/3AqbdbhJXoE/видео.html
Could I use an old punch to draw out and make a tip?
Should be able to as long as you can properly harden and temper it
what would u charge to make me one? just like that one
I thought you shape it then harden and temper. Any reason why one shouldn't do it in this order?
Thanks so much for your time
If you sharpen it before hardening it would be really easy to burn the tip since it is so small
@@tomasmerino1039 hello, I said "shape it" not sharpen/finish. But I see your thinking.
@@hightowerone sorry! Thought it was a typo since it's a common question
And I had my garage door springs replaced 3 months ago... dammit....
I have been making scribes from Garage door spring lately.
Can you tell me where to get a touch marker?
The ones I use came from Henry Evers company. They are online at www.henryaevers.com/
It looks like the purple PVC pipe cleaner for gluing. Would that work, I have plenty?
Then I better make three.
Why did you not temper the scribe after grinding as the temper Culours would have been easier to see?
Tempering should always be done immediately after hardening. Otherwise things can fail due to unrelieved hardening stress.
@@BlackBearForge I agree. When I made Cold Chisels, they were hardened and tempered after grinding and sharpening. Thank you for your reply
