I'm a 2nd year, solo operator here in beautiful Colorado Springs. So far, I have limited myself to sticks and branches cleanups and leaf clean outs in my Spring and Fall clean out season work - of course, along with a lot of snow ❄️ removal through the winter months. I'm not averse to doing some of these other things, including hedges and mowing, but will incorporate more of them regularly in new seasons to come. My clean out rates have been $69.00 /hr, plus dump fees, averaging 3-5 hours per lawn. I'm probably going to increase my rates this Fall or Spring (2025), or simplify pricing by converting over to a bulk price for previous clean out customers.
Brilliant!!! If any of y’all have NOT made the switch to bagged mulch, start today. Typically the price difference per cubic yard less than $10, or sometimes bagged is even cheaper. 14 bags=1 cubic yard. Ease of execution is unbelievable compared to pitchforking and back breaking. Jonothan’s idea of utilizing your equipment will keep you and your crew from getting tired and frustrated. Best Wishes and God bless!
Jonathan I have truly found you to be the most helpful fella for my very small lawn-care business of everybody. Just wanted you to know that and say I really appreciate the way you think---because you do THINK when you are THINKING!!! Take care my friend... Samuel T. Reidsville NC...
I am new to the industry and have been following you since I started last August. You give a lot of great information and I appreciate it. I was reading you following comments here and one person asked the question that I was wondering about pricing. I tend to get had on pricing. In this video you spoke about hedge trimming first, then weeding, then cleaning up and spreading the mulch. Thing is, if you charge by the hour, what is a good hourly rate? People around where I live are doing lawns for $20-$25 dollars to undercut people. Then to mulch lawns, when you say $100/yd, you would think I just asked for their first born. I am just trying to make sure that it will cover the cost of the mulch needed (looked like you used about 3-4 yds in this video for the front yard, $300) to cut would be $45 and then I am not sure what to charge for weeding. It took you only two hours to do. So how did you price this so that you would come out to the good for materials, man hours and for your salary? Sorry for such an in-depth question, but I am trying to learn from one of the best out there.
charge per bag...not by the yard... $100 for a square yard of mulch you said...well thats a lot of money.. last time i bought mulch it was only $3 per bag... as you get better you will be able to learn how much time jobs take... everyone gets screwed on some jobs untill you know what you are doing...
Man if you had gotten into the Termite and Pest Control in Florida, you’d be a millionaire. You have good biz sense. Termite and Pest Control is a hood field when you go in strategically like you are.
I really like your system, and not itemizing people will nitpick it if not careful. I Love your videos, also the documentation of the yard before and pointing out possible future problems that is genius and super smart, I do this as well alot when I have a customer that needs a variety of work done I'll make a video to point out all the specifics and potential problems. You do a fantastic job by the way !
Thanks for the tips I'm really like the way you use the brave related moving the mulch around I've done that with my Ferris walk behind the same way thing is you look like you have hardly anything to clean up to me it's what I call a tidy clean up I just did a yard clean-up the other day almost three full trailers of leaves acorns pine needles that's what a cleanup is like up in the Northeast in Massachusetts have a good day keep growing
Good stuff. Only thing we do different is spray beds before lawn service to give the spray time to dry so you dont track it into lawn. Other than that thats the order we do it. Have a great season J.
That's really interesting that bag mulch is cheaper in your market. Not even close here in Virginia. Regardless of cost, my company couldn't use bagged because we do some commercial work that takes upwards of a hundred cubic yards. I can see how bags would be easier to handle for residential for sure
I've always been told if you trim weeds under plants you could scar plant trunk and kill the plant how do you keep from doing this...LAWN 1 JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA.......
Thanks for another practical time saving= profitable video. Could you please tell us what weed killer and pre-emergent you used on the flower beds? Thanks in advance.
Always enjoy the knowledge that you provide in your videos; I have learned a lot from watching them. The question I have is on this job how many people did you have helping? Thanks in advance.
Really smart to not allow itemizing. Neighbors have no idea that a client didn’t want to pay for deeweeding or to clean out the leaves. They just look at the work you performed and judge your company for not doing the job the way it should be done professionally. For this reason I have actually started charging a little more for my lawns and including spraying for weeds in beds on a normal mow
I really like that process. Very curious to know do you ever use landscape fabric? I hate using it and it sounds like your process is a great alternative. Also, you are spot on when itemizing clean up quotes. I will start bundle service immediately and present it as such.
You make a great point with regard to not doing line items! This season so far, I have noticed a lot of nitpicking. I had one lady say "well I guess I can mow my lawn, but I need shrubs completed..." We bid these jobs as complete services and as you pointed out, limiting choices helps to get rid of the tire kickers! Thanks for sharing this video!
I appreciate all the vids , I learned a lot from you but I like the vids in the field , it’s different . We can see what u actually do . Keep up the good work
What is your exit plan when it's time to retire? Sell the company? sell the accounts/equipment/vehicles? Or hire/promote an executive officer to run it for you and live off of royalties? Or other? Cheers from Jacksonville!
I thought you were going to share the price with us. I always struggle pricing cleanups since they can sometimes be much more time consuming than expected
Hey Jonathan! And fellow Florida Turf Pro fans. Hello again from Melbourne, Australia. I don't know what's happening in Florida, but our kids are back to school next week. Schools have been shut for weeks here because of Coronavirus. Kids are to stay at home, and learn at home if at all possible, but if their parent(s) work in essential services - police, fire, my barista - they'll be back behind their desks, for better or for worse on Wednesday. If you want to know how we're tackling Coronavirus/COVID-19 here in Melbourne, Australia just ask below. Happy Easter y'all!!!
Shit man I HATE HATE HATE bag mulch. I'd rather load it off the trailer into the wheel barrel, and bust the dump into 2 or 3 piles. I don't think it's good to just drive mowers across people's yards for no reason. To each their own though 🤷🏻♂️
When I worked in a foundry in the 80's we took salt tablets as a way to keep from passing out. Unless a person is a couch tater, it gets passed through pretty fast. My work clothes would be white and stiff if I let them dry instead of washing them right away.
@@bubbafudpucker397 Yes sir , I took them back in my youth and high school football days only to find out years later they were not good for you. They are hard on your kidneys by my understanding. Give the video a like if you would please. Thank you. =)
Florida Turf Pros how much on average do you charge for mulch? Materials? Labor?
Great video, thanks!

Southern Style Lawn Care Good point. Stay safe brotha!
Great advice Mr Johnathan , that bullet point of the systematic type of clean up does make good sense. ☝️
Jonathan
talk more on pricing on spring clean ups. Use an avg yard for example. Thanks Man
What kind of weed killer do you use and what kind of pre-emergent do you use
Do you offer and schedule clean ups once the mowing season is underway ? Or only during early spring, pre-mowing season ?
What do I you do when you blow clippings? Do you bag them or blow them back into the lawn and mow over or what?
what pre emergent you used?
Yes what is the mix you are using in the backpack sprayer? Awesome video & thank you.
For weed killer and pre-emergents do you need a pesticide license?
That's really interesting that bag mulch is cheaper in your market. Not even close here in Virginia. Regardless of cost, my company couldn't use bagged because we do some commercial work that takes upwards of a hundred cubic yards. I can see how bags would be easier to handle for residential for sure
Yes, it’s easier to stage on small yards and makes for quicker cleanups.
I've always been told if you trim weeds under plants you could scar plant trunk and kill the plant how do you keep from doing this...LAWN 1 JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA.......
I tackle that in a similar fashion I just don’t have a license to spray chemicals. Great video
What pre-emergent do you like?
Good stuff as usual!
Thank you!
Great tip on using a small trimmer line to clean the weeds up in the flowerbeds. Thanks!
Here's a tip for lawn care in Florida, you must be licensed by the state of Florida to spray weed killer !
Thanks for another practical time saving= profitable video. Could you please tell us what weed killer and pre-emergent you used on the flower beds? Thanks in advance.
what are yall using for weed killer and pre-emergent??
Always enjoy the knowledge that you provide in your videos; I have learned a lot from watching them. The question I have is on this job how many people did you have helping? Thanks in advance.
Two guys total.
@@FloridaTurfPros Thanks again.
What weed cleaner and pre emergent do you use?
Juan Salazar surflan and glyphosate
What do you do with older mulch from previous landscaping, prior to weeding and pre emergent and new mulch laying?
Looking to start my own lawn Care business but I work shift work. Think it can be done!!
Another great video. What pre emergent and weed killer do you use?
Glyphosate and Surflan
What Lawn business software do you use and have found to be useful/full of features?
Good tip👍What kind of pre emergent do you like to use in the beds?
Glyphosate and Surflan
Never give people the opportunity to start shopping on your estimates. Don't itemize your services.

Thomas Farrell Good thinking. I’ve debated on adding flower bed weeding/spraying to normal service as well.
Do u need a license to spray the weedkiller and pre emergent?

Shawn Henry I agree completely. It just looks better when you do everything that needs to be done.
I appreciate all the vids , I learned a lot from you but I like the vids in the field , it’s different . We can see what u actually do . Keep up the good work
Cool.. I’ll post some more of our work
Glad to see you doing well and going strong. Makes me miss being in this business.
0 dislikes....u made it
What is your exit plan when it's time to retire? Sell the company? sell the accounts/equipment/vehicles? Or hire/promote an executive officer to run it for you and live off of royalties? Or other? Cheers from Jacksonville!
Bags is definitely better easier cleaner. Much better than mulch by yard
Good stuff, I also use bags of mulch.
It’s just cleaner and easier for transport
Florida Turf Pros exactly
Do u need a license to spray herbicides?
I thought you were going to share the price with us. I always struggle pricing cleanups since they can sometimes be much more time consuming than expected
Budget the amount of hours and multiply by your man hr rate. Make sure to include haul off time.
Charge at least 50 +plus per hour , and dump fee
really great video as always, thanks for the info!
took that speedbump at the end a little quick! haha
Right?! Lol
What brand weed killer
How much do you charge for the bags of mulch installed?
depends how much you getting the pallet for or per bag ?
UpHillChris51 How much should I charge on top of the bag price, of it is per bag? Because the color depend on the price.
