This great man used to perform in places where no great artists go, in small remote villages, far countries... inspiring simple people. So unusual, so incredibly great!
At 24:00 he said that he feels at home in most places, except America, London, some Nordic countries and... Germany! Neuhaus said that every artist has Italy as a second fatherland... Richter said at 26:10 that he is half German, half Russian, and can have the best of these two worlds, as he had immense knowledge of both Russian and German culture... while he certainly was in love with French Art (and as we can see here, also with French wine!)
Thanks for posting this wonderful rare interview!
This is deeply moving... one of the biggest treasures I ever found on youtube. Thank you very much for posting! Richter: What an amazing artist, what a humble human being. I saw one of Richter's last concerts in Germany at age 13, leaving an enormous impression on me. Getting him to "know" so personally through this video is just magical...
i couldn't have said it better, what a wonderful person, i feel very connected with him
So enjoyed this video. Many thanks to whomever made this possible. Richter will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists ever.
Given his monumental artistry Richter always retained a humble charm and simplicity of character. He was a devoted servant to what he perceived as musical truth in performance and could easily discern between bogus posturing and musical integrity in other performers.
A much missed giant.
Thank you for this wonderful film! And for the translation! Richter is really a marvelous person!
Wow! I am impressed with this man! He is half drunk and still has wise things to say to all of us. He is "Himself", and does not care about what you or I may think. Kind, warm, simple and genial.... Who cares if we are sober, vegan or vegetarian if we have nothing worth to say? Love this guy. He is the model of imperfect Humanity at its best!
Guy is you. It's a strange familiarity to call the musician who is so respectful and kind towards his listeners in such a way. If you d only know that he didn't visit Armenia ever after such an attitude and called Armenian composer Babajanian as lazy but talented and so on, understand?
...it is so true, he is a master
Trivial and shallow , yet imperfect observation

Was für ein wundervoller Mensch und Künstler
grand merci .
To see Richter getting tipsy and going all raconteur is enormously entertaining and relaxing. This video is best watched with a bottle of good Mosel.
Thank you,
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Apparently filmed in 1979 in that the speaker at one point said that it had been 15 years since Richter first played in Tours in 1964.
Oh, such a treasure! Awaiting the english translation, please....
This is wonderful. Thank you for posting!
You´re very lucky. No any person can tell listened to one of greatest pianist ever!!!
Both Richters at 21:00 talking about tempo issues and the German Richter in his nonchalantly saxon manner of speaking! You made my day!
Merci pour l'explication et merci, merci pour la traduction !
Thank you so much your posting!!
Fantastisch! Tausend Dank!
All of it thanks for the English translation. Much obliged for it.
I like his "und" so much ! 😄
this is great, thanks so much for the upload! it is funny how much Richter interrupts the interviewer... sometimes as if he is waiting for him to speak so he can interrupt. thank you also for the translations, fantastic
Apart from the stunning pictures of the very relaxed maestro there are his views on composers such as Mozart at the end of the interview. Thanks Belshep, highly interesting upload.
Beautiful 🎹🎶
A lot of thanks !
thank you very much!!!
I so love this man...what an idealist...
Beings like S. Richter never fail to fascinate me. He appears to be so different when he sits and play than when he talks.
The way he sits naturally in front of the piano, in what seems to be a man being in his most natural state, gently but firmly turns the pages and then with a brilliant energy start playing the music, bringing forth the most beautiful tone. All while looking stern sometimes, other times genuinely playful like the way a little baby would play with their toy. It’s amazing.
Merci!!!
So nice of you!!! thank you, I can see it and am reading it!!! Great! :-)
Величайший наш человек!!!!
Я не устаю удивляться его гению и каждый раз жду нового чуда. Спасибо, Рихтер!
Karl Richter and Oleg Kagan are playing the concerto n.3 in D BWV 1054: sublime!
Er heißt nicht Karl sondern Sviatoslav!
@@markuskohler1196 Hier ist zwei Richter, Karl und Sviatoslav. Karl ist ein Organist, Cembalist und Diregent .
When glen gould Soviet, he met richter and he really liked him.👏👏👏💐💐💐
I cried, and I am 33.
Unfassbar, wie gut Richter Deutsch sprach- hätte ich nie gedacht!
Why? German was his native language
It has been translated. There's a link to download the English translation in the box below the video
Except the interviewer’s questions and manners, almost everything is good. Richter, good as always. But also, the town, people, buildings, and other environmental details are authentic, full of life, and real.
This is amazing, especially since he spoke german that well!
He was German by blood
Well said!.
That would be great!
He understood English quite well and was a charming man to at least one fan. Sadly missed.
Großartig, Richter deutsch sprechen zu hören.
I just adore it. Thank you so much to put us nearer Richter’ s so human personality beyond the great artist. I understand poorly German language which I discover in Wagner and Strauss’ operas and the great treasure of lieder from Mozart to Mahler. But it was possible to go along with this at ease con
Please, do so.
So many people will be grateful to you.

I am willing to translate it for you - how do I add the subtitles?
Am I only one who doesn't have a sound on this video?

Richter's german is amazingly good, his choice of words is very precise, better than many Germans. And he seems to understand the german of the interviewer. I never saw him so serene, friendly and open. Generally he looks quite serious, almost gloomy.
A pity that the interviewer did not do a better job. He does not really seem up to the task, luckily Richter was in a good mood and did his best to communicate some of his ideas. Maybe the alcohol.
You do realize he is like half-german?
His name is "richter"
@@albertweedsteinthethuggeni7797 Well, doesn't mean he has actually learned the language as a child. Could be just his grand- parents or something. Anyway. A great artist he was.
@@bernios3446 his dad was german
@@albertweedsteinthethuggeni7797 And was arrested and shot for being one by the NKVD when Richter was a child. Very traumatic. He talked about it years later in another interview.

Wow! Two legends together!
This film has never been released on DVD.Maybe on VHS long ago. It's just circulating among Richter fans.

There is no sound !
Open the box under the video - there's the English translation link
Thanks for the translation in English...although I have not yet managed to view it :(
Can't hear the audio
He says his father was a German from Poland and his mother was Russian but half-German with a lot of Polish ancestry as well. So he's 75% German ethnically.
You're very welcome
Yes, it would be great if you send it to me so that I could post it in the description area. I plain haven't had the time for this and by now only gone as far as making the German transcript Thanks!
And the sound??
2 Richter's at once!
A treasure!
I saw this beautiful Richter Portrait already in the 1970´s or early 80´s I am not quite sure but a long period before the Monsaingeon 'enigma'. Very interesting what he said about Mozart, pretty subjective but true: ' Ich habe doch den Schlüssel zu Mozart noch nicht gefunden, alles was er schreibt, ist schrecklich schwer, bei Haydn leicht!'
dann sagte er sinngemäß noch:' was ist das mit Mozart? [hält inne], keine Antwort'
Mozart was in fact a enigma for Richter but he didnt play him that bad!
It does! Must be something wrong with your audio settings

The first piece is not the cembalo concierto No. 1 in d minor but the cembalo concierto No.3 in D major, second movement, Adagio in b minor.
Not true, the title is correct this is the second movement of the D minor concerto BWV 1052, Adagio in g minor. You can find the score on IMSLP.
Right.
i don’t understand german at all i just love seeing and hearing what he spoke...
Check out the English translation link in the description box
