I like the mythology-based SCPs, especially how they retell the myths and monsters in a whole new way. And it also gives me something new to research lol
Henry Schmale For starters, you'd have to know of specific mythological creatures, figures, places and tales to begin with in order to know if an SCP was inspired by one or not. Some might be easy to identify, like, say, an SCP that's a dragon, for instance SCP 111. But others, such as this, you gotta dig around in books and on the web to learn more about them. As for 1836, I forgot the actual name of the myth, but it is Inuit in nature and goes like this: there is a young woman living with her elderly father in a village far north, and times are very tough. They are struggling to collect food, and things look bleak until a mysterious stranger arrives in the town. He proposes to help the elderly man and supply him with all the freshly-caught fish the man could want, but only if he can have the elder's daughter's hand in marriage. The elder agrees, and the man leaves with the woman. Upon the following night, the elder finds a boat overflowing with fish, but they are all rotten-only the crows could feast on these. Enraged, he finds the stranger who just so happens to be the spirit Crow himself, and demands the spirit proper payment. Crow does not relent and instead flees on a boat with the woman, only for her to fall overboard at some point. She pleads with her father to save her from drowning, but her father, blinded by his rage and greed, hacks off the fingers from both her hands and leaves her to die. Afterwards, his daughter becomes the manifestation of porpoises and whales, her spirit wandering the ocean. The sad-sounding wails of these sea creatures mimic her sobs. At least, that's my summary of the story. Another fact that is mentioned by this SCP-as she has no fingers, she cannot comb her own hair, which is long and tangled. If you comb her hair for her, she will grant you one favor/wish as thanks.
If you're on www.scp-wiki.net/ you can go into the discussions regarding each SCP. That can give you clues (or sometimes straight up tell you) as to references myths, idea origins, etc. I enjoy the discussions almost as much as the scips themselves, because I'm dense and a lot of the time I don't understand what I'm reading.

The, not included, missing incident report actually sheds a lot of light on a few things and is worth the brief read.

Incident Report: 110-614 Date: ██/██/██13 Location: Site 641 Description: On ██/██/██13 SCP-1836 broke containment. During a routine implementation of the Helping Hands Protocol, the on-site shaman, Teriaque LeChatlier, was interrupted by an unknown party during his procedure. The following is a summary of the video surveillance footage taken by the observation post. SCP-1836 is immobile, resting against the gravel bar. The sea is calm and the aviary fence is in place. The water around SCP-1836 begins to churn. The layer of green ice curls into swirling patterns. SCP-1836 has entered its active state. Structural deformations appear on the surface of SCP-1836. SCP-1836 appears to be attempting to withdraw from the gravel bar. Teriaque LeChatlier arrives and begins pre-entry preparations accompanied by Lidia O'Foote, on-site cosmetologist. After ten minutes of preparation and burning of incense they enter SCP-1836 Unusual cloud formation detected by perimeter defense assets. Site-641 is placed on emergency weather alert. Ambient temperature falls from 15° C to -4° C. No warnings have been issued by local weather services. SCP-1836 slows its motion. Observation post receives a short radio message indicating that the Helping Hands Protocol is underway and will calm SCP-1836 shortly. Foundation perimeter hydrophones detect elevated whale song levels. Analysis by staff marine biologists indicates that the song is not associated with mating or feeding behaviors. LeChatlier and O'Foote have not yet emerged from SCP-1836. Radio contact indicates that the Helping Hands Protocol is still ongoing. The unusual cloud formation occludes the airspace over Site-641 and stops moving with prevailing winds. Closer inspection reveals that the cloud formation is a flock composed entirely of Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis). The flock descends and begin to harass site staff. The high concentration of fulmar make it impossible for staff to conduct outdoor activities. Staff are ordered indoors. The fulmar make no attempt to break into site facilities with the exception of the aviary fence which is attacked by the flock. SCP-1836 violently lists and jostles during this time. Repeated attempts to contact LeChatlier and O'Foote have failed. SCP-1836 displays more agitation and is deforming in a manner consistent with an attack on a ship. It is postulated that SCP-1836 is attempting to breach the aviary cage and engage the fulmar. The aviary cage is under continuous assault by the flock during this time. Site security efforts to drive off the flock have failed. Security staff attempt to keep the aviary fence clear using small arms fire, signal flares and noise deterrents. None of these are effective. The extermination of individual members of the flock is not significant in regard to the total population. A hole in the aviary fence allows a wave of fulmar to breach containment. They swarm the interior of the fence. A single, large, toothed, pelican-like bird of unknown species lands on the gravel bar and metamorphoses into a humanoid figure wearing local, traditional garments. This figure is briefly seen darting up the catwalk before the camera is obscured by birds. A loud, groaning sound consistent with glacial calving is emitted by SCP-1836. The iceberg shudders and wrenches free of the gravel bar. SCP-1836 proceeds to ram the aviary cage. LeChatlier and O'Foote are violently expelled from the entrance causeway. Both are unconscious and demonstrate defensive wounds, frostbite and bite marks. SCP-1836 breaks through the aviary cage and begins to move into open water. Foundation MTF-89E is mobilized to recontain SCP-1836. SCP-1836 enters the Barrow Strait and begins moving west. MTF-89E is in pursuit. Then things got…weirder. Fullbrush: In what way? O'Foote: At first I thought it was just T being paranoid. He kept on asking me if I was doing anything differently and I told him no, I'm brushing and trimming like I always do. I tell him that I'm not pulling any knots and that her hair is just fine…that it's something else maybe… [pause] Fullbrush: I know this is hard to talk about but please continue. O'Foote: I don't really know. I'm just a hairdresser… Fullbrush: Did LeChatelier say or do anything unusual before you were interrupted? O'Foote: I remember T saying something about how she wouldn't stop talking about her husband. Her ex-husband. Something about a restraining order and coming to visit? Time doesn't pass right inside there. Anyway… I remember the room shaking and she started shrieking something fierce, like I had pulled on her too hard. I got pushed away and slipped on the ice. That's when things got worse. Fullbrush: Our surveillance indicates that something walked up into SCP-1836 during the incident outside. Is that what you're talking about? O'Foote: Yeah, I saw this person in mukluks and a parka come in. They threw, literally threw, T aside an' stabbed him with… little bird feet? Claws? Hidden up inside his sleeves. There wasn't any blood; I don't know how but T didn't bleed. He just fell, laid there. The guy who… who killed T walked up to her and started talking. Fullbrush: What did he say? O'Foote: He said that he knew he wasn't supposed to talk to her anymore, that he was sorry to disturb her. He said something like "Even though we're divorced I still care about you" and "I couldn't let them keep you away from your children." Fullbrush: Then what happened? O'Foote: He said something about T being a "traitor to the art". Roughed me up a bit. Said I was good at my job. Said that I was good enough to her to avoid what happened to T. He tossed us out. I bumped my head on the catwalk and everything went gray. I came to in the infirmary. Fullbrush: Is there anything else you remember, anything important? O'Foote: I don't know. That man… that man was so strange and so angry. He kept talking about jailers and injustice. When he cut me he called it a "snake bite" but said something about having no poison. Ugh. I honestly don't know if that's important or not. [pause] Fullbrush: We can continue this later if you like. Give you some more time to deal with it? O'Foote: I'd like that. It's just a lot to chew. T was a kind soul, a good friend. End Recording

I know I'm late to the party, but did anyone else confuse Cosmetologist with Cosmologist until the interview? I was wondering what kind of deep secret of the universe would cause the foundation to need both a Shaman and an expert on the Big Bang on the same team?

I love SCP so much. Some SCP's are... Weird. Just downright strange. Others however, really makes you sit down and ask yourself "... This is just a joke, right?" but in the back of your head, you get this feeling. The sense that... Maybe it is. But what if it isn't? What if the Foundation -does- exist, yet keeps their "real" work far better hidden, and only offers slight hints others have picked up? I know I'm talking silly, but the thought that such things could exist in our world... It's stuff like that, that really keeps you up at night.
L0LHei what if the whole wiki site is a way for the government to get US to basically give them a list of paranormal subjects to investigate? People would just write it off as fiction. Who would ever suspect? Anyone who did would be considered a nut. Just like everyone who thought project paperclip and mk ultra were conspiracy theories? If you claim it's real nobody would believe it. They'd just say you were crazy. It would be a pretty clever cover up. Truth in fiction. Prolly not. But it's an interesting lil theory.
That's what I thought. If they pass it off as fiction they don't have to hide the truth but rather could just go along with the ride. Obviously not everything is real, but some stuff could be, just thrown in by the foundation so people don't get suspicious
Aleut, Yup'ik, and Inupiat are all ethnicity's (Primarily) indigenous to Alaska, from research. The Cunningham Inlet is far in the Canadian Archipelago on Somerset Island, in Nunavut, an Inuit territory. They are genetically related though, but I read up that the Yup'ik don't like being mistaken for Inuit. Just something you don't need to know
Dude, your voice paints pictures! I know that sounds weird but it’s true. When you read these I get a very distinct mental picture in my head about what is going on during these briefings. Thank you for the entertainment!!!
this is actually based on inuit folklore about a girl who's father cut off her fingers after pushing her off a boat, and a sea witch made her a mermaid kind of being and her fingers grow back and fall off as the worlds seals
Ah, one of the few I know off the top of my head as a legend...not because I'm into Inuit legends or anything, just that this one was used in a book called the Barsoom Project as a sidequest in a VR Videogame, and I thought it was interesting so it stuck with me.
An Angakkuq is the Inuit equivalent to a medicine man or a spirit shaman, they give spiritual guidance and assistance regarding the spirit world, as well as helping cure the sick, control the weather and improve hunting thru various rituals. They also ensured all members followed the “laws” of the land (things to avoid, things to follow and things to do) and if broken, they would intervene in order to prevent misfortune that would be brought upon the individual or the tribe as a result of said taboo ❤ I love learning about native cultures so i hope this is useful for anyone interested :)
I love your voices! I find the 'Cure' hilarious. .if he was real I would fancy him..this guy instead of Researcher Miller (see I'm a halfwit speaking about them as if they are real separate entities lol!) Yeah bim und his pronunciation are as funny as the guy who did the insect one....btw I'm going down the entire list because I am sure you will have done it and I need to hear it done by 'the Original' Volgun lol! I am having great fun listening to all the SCP's...thanks x
Imagine hunting a pod of whales and an iceberg rams you only to sink the ship you're in and if you've killed one you'll get killed by extinct whales and dolphins. Imagine getting killed by a basilosaurus.
Basilosauride? Aren't they an ancient whale species that ate other whales? I only think this because of its likeness to Basilosaurus which was a primitive whale that had proper non whale like teeth.

Huh, if the coordinates are used as standard GPS coords in google maps you get either the northern coast of Canada in those random islands near Greenland, or a spot on Antarctica not far from the coast, just a little ways from that pointy tail bit of the continent, depending on if you just put the north part in as-is or convert it to south because of the minus sign.
Okay so not including the minus those coordinates take you to a largeish natural harbor on a small uninhabited island in Canada. Welp I know where I'm going for vacation.

Fullbrush: I know this is hard to talk about but please continue.
O'Foote: I don't really know. I'm just a hairdresser…
Fullbrush: Did LeChatelier say or do anything unusual before you were interrupted?
He said something like "Even though we're divorced I still care about you" and "I couldn't let them keep you away from your children."
Fullbrush: Then what happened?
[pause]
Fullbrush: We can continue this later if you like. Give you some more time to deal with it?
O'Foote: I'd like that. It's just a lot to chew. T was a kind soul, a good friend.
End Recording
Chaos well that’s depressing. I liked Teriaq. He appeared in another SCP file, 828z
**Gurgle!** ^w^
SCP 999 awww u cute lil blob of orange gelatinous substance!
Aren't you supposed to be bugging 682
SCP 999 feel like I see you in the comments of scp videos alot😂😂
Please don’t play with 682 I read the report
Superb you funky little blob
yes!
confinement is bringing the community together, and it may be my favorite animated series on RUclips.
I found confinement after RUclips just wouldn't stop reccomending it.
You Can click "level 3 authorization" on the wiki and it will show you all the incident reports :P
technically we all have 05 authorization..
Which is what I love about that website. Makes me feel like 05 command when I read a file.
Tbh I would say were level four.
If we had O5 access we wouldn't have to ready so much [REDACTED] I assume.
@@themessageofgod9425 eh, maybe there's even higher ups that just like to censor stuff.
I’m also pretty sure there is a grand total of 13 05- council members.
Woah,I am surprised!Quality of your content is perfect. Keep going like this and after 3-4 months you will be in You-tube trands!
Wanted to find out about this SCP after seeing ep.4 of confinement, thanks for doing it
Sedna goddess of the ocean
As a native to one of the Alaskan tribes it's nice to see the names and languages being used. It's hard to get the words right for English speakers because we use sounds not used normally practices. To get you close to what is said Yu'pik- U Pik, IÑUPIAT- In Nu pi Aak, Aleut- Ally Oot. Hope it helps
I am familiar with the word Angakkoq ^__^ it's a inuit word for a Zaman/wizard, this is very interesting for me
Karl Adolfsen no thats too spooky
@@NC54 The internet has made me unable to believe this, but i'd like to.
Lovecraft uses the word in "The Call of Cthulhu," when describing an arctic branch of the Cthulhu cult. That was the first time I ever saw it written
I know I'm late to the party, but did anyone else confuse Cosmetologist with Cosmologist until the interview? I was wondering what kind of deep secret of the universe would cause the foundation to need both a Shaman and an expert on the Big Bang on the same team?
YOU DID THIS BECAUSE OF THE CONFINMENT SERIES
Um Confinement and this series are both products of the SCP Foundation. Do your homework.
@@gubbehplezz8415 you're kidding me right, he's saying that the series inspired The Volgun to do a reading of the SCP featured. If you're going to accuse someone of being an idiot, don't be one yourself. Dickhead
@@mrmonsterhunter808 my bad, spergberger. Chill.
Confinement didn’t create SCP. Idiot.
I see you're a fan of Michael Moorcock's works, fellah
As an Alaskan native these are correct ways to say these tribes, Aleut(al-aye-ut) yupik(you-pick) inupiat (in-you-pie-ak) "yukpik" is a misspelling, you were super close and I love these videos so much
Gotta throw the whole ocean away now
I love your videos. You really put effort into them.
I see this SCP starred in Confinement ep. 4!
Yea, I saw this on the animated SCP RUclips series! An interesting one this is
That's hands down my favorite story!! Thank you!!😇
Aleut, Yup'ik, and Inupiat are all ethnicity's (Primarily) indigenous to Alaska, from research. The Cunningham Inlet is far in the Canadian Archipelago on Somerset Island, in Nunavut, an Inuit territory. They are genetically related though, but I read up that the Yup'ik don't like being mistaken for Inuit.
Just something you don't need to know
“It’s just a bird
Not even a cool one like a ostrich”
- Confinement Ep.4
I love the lecture series style this is pretty cool 👍
Wonderful! This inspired me to read more Inuit myths. Indigenous peoples’ myths are fantastic!
This is definitely Sedna...don't piss her off. lol
Its ICE that i saw this when i did, now i can CHILL and COOL off
Plague Rat I FROZE when I saw this comment. Had to read it twICE.
Plague Rat cool story bro, very nIce
Ah, one of the few I know off the top of my head as a legend...not because I'm into Inuit legends or anything, just that this one was used in a book called the Barsoom Project as a sidequest in a VR Videogame, and I thought it was interesting so it stuck with me.
Scp-1836 is basically a ice block with a human woman inside with dangerous creatures lurking around it
Not human, the goddess Sanna.
I love how much it leans on the idea that inuit religious practices are soooo detailed and seemingly random
The idea of a sentient iceberg quickly hurling towards me spooks me out.
Great this is in my country: Canada. Also, just to let you know Volgun, those words you were trying your best to pronounce are Inuit (from Nunavut).
I'm Alaskan-native, I'm also Iñuit. I died when he pronounced Aleut. Although, good try. Love these vids.
Fire Fox guess he's having _nunavut_
I’m inuk and he did pretty good, he almost got a few of the words, and the whole idea of a Sedna scp is cool
The Titanic is disappointed about this
If anyone cares, the coordinates are off the northern coast of Somerset Island in Canada
An Angakkuq is the Inuit equivalent to a medicine man or a spirit shaman, they give spiritual guidance and assistance regarding the spirit world, as well as helping cure the sick, control the weather and improve hunting thru various rituals. They also ensured all members followed the “laws” of the land (things to avoid, things to follow and things to do) and if broken, they would intervene in order to prevent misfortune that would be brought upon the individual or the tribe as a result of said taboo ❤
I love learning about native cultures so i hope this is useful for anyone interested :)
Regional accents and everything, good on ya.
Huh... Fullbrush is surprisingly accommodating. That is a refreshing change.
excellent read, I'm sure the Temps will love it
Avenging Iceberg. I love it.
TheVolgun: the Bob Ross of the SCP community.
I remember this legend.
Basilosauride? Aren't they an ancient whale species that ate other whales? I only think this because of its likeness to Basilosaurus which was a primitive whale that had proper non whale like teeth.
Technically speaking basilosauride is a whole family of species comprising no less than 14 known species.
casualty report. 3 fatalities due to the failure of Helping Hands protocol. Of course, many others have perished from other instances but these were the only ones with foundation involvement.
Hey at least I already interviewed her with some questions:|
You asked one question Connor, one...
You’d be good for people who like killing people.
better have a cosmetologist on hand, never know when your mascara is going to make a run for it.
Oh. Literally a cosmetologist.
Man I feel jipped we didn't get to hear the other level 3 log at the end
the SCP is on the north end of somerset island and down from cornwallis island like almost under resolute in a cove, like right around/in the arctic circle. here google maps cordinates *74.13397754320373 -93.81323256594851*
this is in the confinement series
74°07'48.0"N 93°48'36.0"W
This voice was so soothing I forgot it was you....
Killing poachers is pretty cool not gonna lie so this SCP is overall pretty good.
I could have sworn I heard wrong when he first said "shaman and cosmetologist"
Maybe SCP-096 would be less shy if he had an on-site cosmetologist
I looked up the coordinates and SCP-1836 turns out to be smack dab in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean
And now I have that Heather Dale song about Sedna stuck in my head. Welp.
She sounds lovely... I wish her hands weren’t severed, but it’s better than dying and not coming back, right?
She's actually a goddess and I think her being mummified has to do with her blood becoming sea life and the iceberg.
An angakkuq is an Inuit medicine man
Is this SCP giving anyone else Final Fantasy VII flashbacks? Jenova in her tank, Sephiroth attacking with the zodiac and shit, Aerith dying for our fandom sins? Just me?
N 74.13 W 93.81 is just north of somerset isle
Sedna the sea goddess
Huh, if the coordinates are used as standard GPS coords in google maps you get either the northern coast of Canada in those random islands near Greenland, or a spot on Antarctica not far from the coast, just a little ways from that pointy tail bit of the continent, depending on if you just put the north part in as-is or convert it to south because of the minus sign.
Fascinating and weird!
So it's a iceberg possessed by a woman that preserves aquatic mammalian species and saves them from being hunted. And only uses force when necessary
By the maker, they found SEDNA?!
There was a Budweiser add involving corona virus on this vid btw
SHE SUNKED TITANIC!!!!
IcyCrystal BlueBird I knew someone would make this joke
I saw u in lord bungs vid
Austin GX K
Sank, it’s sank.
Doctor Jade is my favourite!
I looked up the coordinates and it was already searched XD
This one seems to be written differently than the previous examples.
This sounds like the legend of sedna
Nice
I want to Die you're first!
Commander November nice
Nice
Please tell me you'll do a reading of the incident report at some point, that would be awesome
Well that was bloody silly.
Angekok- Inuit wizard priest
you can google n 74.13- w93.81
Why didn’t you finish the addendum it adds so much more to the lord of this sco
Okay so not including the minus those coordinates take you to a largeish natural harbor on a small uninhabited island in Canada. Welp I know where I'm going for vacation.
Oh! New confinement video! Meh, volgun already got that SCP. I’ll take that instead.
