Interesting fact about Corfe Castle is that, during the Civil War, it was the last Royalist stronghold in Dorset and was under siege by the Parliamentarians. The castle fell when one of the garrison betrayed his comrades by letting a squad of Roundheads in through a side gate. They weren't identified as enemies because they turned their tunics inside out so the red lining was showing, which looked liked the Royalist redcoat uniform. Hence the word "turncoat" meaning a traitor.
We also have a special stone at the side of a nearby road. It commemorates the countries oldest man, he was 145. Dosn't give a lot of detail, it just says his name was Miles from London.
Growing up in the area, passing Shitterton always brought a snigger. Then it got renamed, Sitterton, which started a long campaign by the residents to have it put back. Nearby are the rivers Puddle and Piddle, giving their names to Puddletown (famous for its martyrs) and Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide. there used to be a pub landlord who bottled the water from the river Piddle, selling it to the US as genuine Piddle water. Then there's the Cerne Giant, and a bit South, Weymouth, Portland (just a bleak rock made of fossils), and the lovely scenic coast road along to Abbotsbury (swannery is worth a visit), the tropical gardens, and then into West Bay. So Dorset is not entirely empty.

As a resident of Bridport, I can say with confidence you are very brave standing that close to the Cliff, bugger has a nasty habit of falling down this time of year
You can tell us about R J Balson and son then ruclips.net/video/KeqxW9yv4Jw/видео.html. Jon should have mentioned the oldest continuously run business in Britain. He might have got some free sausages for promoting the shop.
Yep sod going near the cliffs. I don’t think they are that fussy about when to fall down now either. And to think we used to sit up on the edge 30 years ago with a few beers!
Of course you have other coastal landmarks between Swanage and Bridport, such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, and also Chesil Beach, a 16 mile stretch of pebbles and sand where the bouncing bombs were tested prior to the Dambusting missions. Also Weymouth between there too, one of the oddities of locations of the summer race riots this year.
Thank goodness for that! I don’t feel like I need to see my shrink now. Or perhaps we all do? 🤔 I would like to think that at one end where the two halves meet is a special enclosure few male spectators could find called the Clitorium, while at the other end one found the rear entrance or ‘Sphinctarium Exodus’ 🤔
I went in the Tilly Whim caves when it was still open, back in the 1970’s. It was a fatality waiting to happen back then. Not surprised they closed. Love the old stuff.
The coast road is one of the best driving routes in the UK. Stunning coastal and countryside views, sloping and bending sections and great test of driving skills. No wonder bikers love it
NT and NTS - agree with the cost of entry, in some places it's crazy expensive. Urquhart Castle is £15 p.a. tourist trap lol at Baywatch, almost nailed it there.
I used to attend a summer camp just outside Swanage at a place called Langton Matravers & will never forget the view of Corfe Castle from the train on the branch line from Wareham;it's now a heritage line of which no mention! There is also the "ghost village " of Tynham close by. A guy called Ted Edney has his metalworking place in Corfe village;he has regularly featured on Salvage Hunters, the restorers.
I was at Bridport beach approximately 3 years ago, but I did not see your hammer. Not that I was specifically looking for it. I may well go back in the coming years so if I do locate it, I’ll write in and let you know.
The beach and cliffs at the end of the video were used in the opening title sequence of the 1970's s sitcom The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin. It was also used in the series Broadchurch.
Another fine journey Jon. Quick aside, the quarry at the start was, I think, also used, back in the day, as one of many filming locations in Dorset for an episode of Doctor who, but I didn't spot any Daleks roaming about in the background, so I guess you got away ok. Loving the credit at the end!
I've seen a couple of shows at Maumbury Rings. It's really cool to see it full of people all sat around the embankments like a modern stadium. Bet the Romans didn't think it'd still be being used as a venue in the 21st century! Great video, as ever!
Corfe Castle is such a beautiful castle in Dorset. I want to go there for myself. I do like castles. Dorset is such an amazing county in Southern England.
Interesting fact about Lee Lane is that is one of those English lanes specifically designed to trick foreign HVG drivers using sat nav, there is no way for them to get over the bridge at the bottom of the hill just after a very sharp turn.
175 million years old is quite remarkable. Still I haven’t been to Swanage and Corfe Castle but I have been to Lyme Regis and Bournemouth and I definitely would like to go to Poole and Weymouth. Still it’s amazing to see how the Dorset coast stretches for miles.

I used to live down that way in the 70s so it takes me back to the days when we used to regularly walk over the hills from Swanage to Corfe Castle. I bought the Purbeck stone for my first stone fireplace direct from the quarry near Swanage. Happy Days indeed.
I know you were going by the old guide book but Monkey World and Bovington Tank Museum are not that far from Swanage. Then there is Lulworth Castle and the Dorset oil well
Wonderful stuff! I spent many summers, or part thereof, visiting family in Bridport and walking along the seashore by West Bay. Last time I was there was in 2013 for my uncle's funeral and it was amazing how much had change in a few years between trips. Just past The Bull in the background is Chancery Lane, a tiny side alley down which my uncle lived.

Congrats on 150k subscribers Jon! Always a great day when funny beanie bloke in a Saab meets geology - the Bridport Sand Formation as mentioned is minaly sands with occasional silt and mudstones, and represent a shallow shelf ocean, with ripple marks and disturbances in the layers indicating storm events and disturbances in the then loose sediment. The geology also indicates a time where Britiain was much nearer the equator, with numerous fossils present here too - mainly ammonites which are also found at Lyme Regis down the coast. Of course, when we got to the 1970's, it came about the oil potential of the rocks here..
My God! My family is from Bournemouth and I remember visiting the model village as a little kid! I think it may have made an impression on me because I've been into scale models just about my entire life. Blast from the past.
The A35 I have to use that road next week to see the outlaws, not sure what is worse the outlaws or the A35. The A35 at Bridport might be wide but it is always jammed up with vehicles! and all those roundabouts on the A35 into Dorchester Ughh!

Ah my birth county of Dorset! Originally from Bournemouth, family home is currently in Dorchester, my brother and his family live in Bridport. And many an evening was spent down at West Bay! I would recommend the nearby village of Beaminster (a famous actor lives there!) where i lived before moving to Dorchester.
Hi, if you have a spare moment, my partner moved to Beaminster a couple of months ago from Crewkerne. She's still settling in, but so far still drives to Crewkerne or Yeovil for all shopping needs, where prices are lower and people seem friendlier. From a non-tourist point of view, what would you recommend about Beaminster (aside from Mr Clunes and the Clipper Tea factory)? Cheers, Chris.

I learned that when last in Corfe Castle, but ta for the reminder!
Good knowledge
Nice 👍
Don't stop half way through the tale!
You can't leave out the eponymous heroine or the explosive end.
did the traitor let them in via the gift shop?
the gift shop is always a weak spot on castles.
