Thought I'd let you know that I built the same cab but I built mine upright so I could put it in a closet. I put my Rivera Silent Sister inside of it and I am very happy with the results. I can play my Victory VX100 Super Kraken through it mic'd with a SM57 and Sennheiser MD421ii with the gain and volume cranked and listen through my studio monitors. It's really a dream come true. I was never happy with the sound of any IRs. Now I get that studio quality guitar tone at any volume.
That is extremely smart to begin with a size that fits through the door and then work your way back. And I now want to build my own, thanks for this idea!
Colt, you are one smart guy! SMH about the time you were explaining green glue, and suspending the inner cab is brilliant! This is a super impressive design and the fact that I can hear your strings and pick noise over the iso cab says it all. Learning stuff all the time over here, thanks! 👍🏼
Your video from about a year ago gave me the blueprint for the cab that I built. I use the same mics ( PERFECT ) but I use a 2-12 cabinet suspended like you have done. I am blessed to have my own house and the ONLY way to get this thing in and out is through the sliding door that goes to my patio because this bad mo-fo is 45 inches wide!!! BTW..it weighs about 700 pounds !! Thanks bro!!! Home studios RULE!!!!
Plywood box/lid and inside: Layer/sandwich FOAMULAR NGX with a layer of thick wool berber carpet and more FOAMULAR NGX. Thats what I'm going to try. I think the thick berber will dampen any vibration leaving air in the layering. Going to build one this Summer to see if it works 2024
I thought you were just talking game in the first video. After all, who talks all about an iso cab but doesn't even demo the sound? So I was stoked to hear it in this video and kinda blown away by how quiet it was. Great work, dude!
Awesome cab....... I built a drum booth the same way (kinda) .... Instead of bungee cords I put a layer of conveyer belt on the concrete floor then another inside to iso the inner cube. So basically it was suspended in the room on 2 rubber layers. It worked really well. Everyone that ever recorded at my place was impressed. I hope to build another one some soon at my new place. Now I have about 6 times the area to work with ... over 1800 sq ft :)
About 20-ish years ago, when all my friends were buying their first cars, I went for a "Diezel VH4S" and a fitting Diezel 4x12" stereo-cabinet (yes, you read it right .. the amp-head is stereo and needs 2 of everything, that comes after it, which is why I needed a stereo-cabinet, which has 2 inputs .. it's pretty much two 2x12"-cabs rolled into one 4x12"-cab). What can I say? I was in a metal-band, we were touring, we seemed to go somewhere and we were planning to hit the studio, soon. It seemed to be the perfect time, to go all in. Now, that my amp is in my tiny living-room-studio in my one-bedroom-apartment, sadly, building two of your gorgeous iso-cabs isn't an option for me. I would have done it, though, if I had the space. I'm aching to get to play my beloved amp, again .. and my heart bleeds, when I see it just sitting there, collecting dust. But I've heard about "load-boxes" and am not sure, if I understand those, correctly. My intended signal-flow is: Guitar --> Diezel VH4S --> Each channel (left and right, since the amp is stereo) connected to a load-box --> Connected to 2 XLR-inputs of my Audio-Interface (IR-Cabsim-Plugin in the DAW). Notice: I want to completely replace my 4x12" guitar-cabinet by 2 load-boxes .. or a 2-channel load-box, if such a thing exists (hints to good gear of that sort would be very welcome). So I've recently looked at product-descriptions of load-boxes and a lot of them explicitly say: "You still have to connect the load-box to a real speaker-cabinet to take the load". But none of the product-descriptions explicitly say: "This will completely replace your guitar-cabinet". So now, I'm not sure .. Do loadboxes - as I imagine them - exist, at all? Or did I misunderstand something?
Dude. This is so freaking cool. My first diy iso cab was a disaster. And there want easy access to the speaker. This is very cool. I may need to steal... thanks dude!
Isn't your studio on the second floor? Do you have video of you moving it up there? 😁 Thanks for putting this information out there, I would absolutely think nothing of it if I came to your studio and used it. It looks pro, but even if it didn't, sounds killer. I'm hardly a "musician" at my talent level, but if most modern musicians would listen with their EARS rather than their EYES, imagine how much MORE great music there would be.
Wow… great job! There is one thing im not shure i understand… thé part where is thé speaker it self! It seems to be larger then the other part of thé inside cabinet. Where is the whole. And how do you swap off thé speaker? Isn’t it screwed? Thanks
GREAT VIDEO. Love all your videos. Forgive me, I’m a newbie, but what if I had a combo amp? I mean, could I hookup my combo amp to that iso cab or would I have to use just a separate head? Hope it’s not a silly question. Thanks!
This is awesome. Love the design. only thing I'd have to figure out how to incorporate would be how to accommodate combo amps as opposed to a dedicated speaker into a build.
Totally possible, but with limitations. I expect a similar build would work, but you'd need to take into account the fact that combo amps are most often open-back, which uses the room to enhance bass response. If you're ok with losing that, the first option would be to build the "receiver" half of the inner box (the part with the mics in it) to be size-matched to the front of the combo so it can be clamped or strapped onto the front of the combo and acoustically sealed (rubber edge seals would help, and they'd need to mate against the solid frame of the combo), and then build the outer box big enough to accommodate that. You'd then need to suspend that assembly inside the outer box. If you're not cool with screwing eye bolts into your combo amp, then straps come to mind: suspended them between the rubber mounts in Colt's box to make a "hammock" sort of setup that would then cradle the inner assembly. This is the design I'm building right now, but with a closed-back 1x12. After all this though, you'd still have the sound coming out of the back of an open-back combo though into the outer box, so you wouldn't have as much sound isolation. To keep the open-back combo design working as intended using the sound from the back of the combo, you'd need to basically imagine the box as a small room and build it accordingly - and you'd still lose the inner-box-outer-box physical isolation that you get with Colt's design. To get past that, you'd have to build yet another box to enclose everything and it would likely be very large.
The music in your video is always excellent, I always wonder why, there are rarely music credits in RUclips description, above all if it's your mixing/mastering work, or just Premiumbeat stuff ?
I've got a rivera silent sister inside of a sound proof flight case.... Its great, I can crank at 50w engl thunder on full blast and it's about as loud as my TV on normal levels, get great tones through the mic.
Modellers always make a big deal about how different speaker cabinets sound different. What speaker cabinet (Marshall 4x12, Orange, open vs closed back etc...) do you think your isocab sounds like? Hope my question makes sense! Love your videos dude!
Not to say you couldn't do it but good call hiring out the tolex job. I did a couple cabs a long time ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever worked on haha
I think you should just sell the design, including all the dimensions of the individual parts. I think Bill Fitzmaurice does something similar for speaker cabs, and sells a PDF of the design for around $20
That sounded painful, I hope you let your ears rest a while after that! I’ve always wondered about building an iso Leslie style cab, how absolutely ridiculous do you think that would be to do?
Also the iso cab only gives close mic’d sounds. What if you want a blend of close and room mic? What if you had another mic in between the two boxes so it’s a bit further away from the speaker? Or what if the iso box was a lot longer , like two or three times long with a mic right at the end far away from the speaker Or even just lifting the first lid slightly or a lot ? 🤔 hmmm
A mic between the 2 boxes would hear a muffled sound. The monitor trick described by nimrodian will get you some interesting sounds though and if the monitors are loud and you're playing close enough, this will still allow you to get some cool feedback.
Thought I'd let you know that I built the same cab but I built mine upright so I could put it in a closet. I put my Rivera Silent Sister inside of it and I am very happy with the results. I have a silent sister and am about to do the same. I was at Home Depot today!! Any thoughts or tips?

amazing demo!!! Thanks for taking the time to let us hear how amazing your design works.

Thanks, Colt! Two thumbs up! I'm a DIY guy myself, so I love to see others succeed at solving audio issues! Keep up the good work!

Nice! Decent isolation is totally possible, but you have to obey the laws of sound transmission. I love seeing the creativity in good builds.
Holy smokes!! That was awesome Colt! I knew it was a good cab but sheesh this is out of the park!
thanks for this stuff, man! I am on this like stink on you-know-what (it's a family show, ya know? LOL)
Natural teacher. Thanks for this.
Hey Colt, oh yes I am going to build one I have been waiting for the part 2 now for awhile so thanks...... love that stanker
Ha!!! Great video ... Love your enthusiasm *****
You have inspired me to build one with the part 1 video. Thanks Colt
excellent job!

Great video, thank you so much for sharing, def gonna build one of these! One question tho, what is the speaker in the Cab?
Colt you are a true gentleman. It's a cool cab, maybe one day I'll try and build one myself :-)
Dude. This is so freaking cool. My first diy iso cab was a disaster. And there want easy access to the speaker. This is very cool. I may need to steal... thanks dude!
That is so cool never seen one of those before would like to try and build one but don't have the room for something so big.
Congratulations
So.. you effectively built yourself an isolation cabinet that doubles as a tornado life pod.
Great video Colt! thank you for your hard work and for sharing :-)
This reminds me of Noisa's speakers which are suspend in glass. Very cleaver solution!
That's a real clever solution! :)
Appreciate it!

Great job Brother! Thank You!👍🏼😃
oh wow, a part 2!! nice
This was awesome bro. If i ever build one i will be hitting you up for sure
Thanks man! Happy to help anytime!
INCREDIBLE VOLUME DROP! So do you PREFER the speaker vs. DAW type guitar recording?
Thx you so much Colt...
Love the BRCC hat!
I bought a Rivera Silent Sister but it's still pretty loud. I think I am going to build an outer shell like yours to put it in.
When you were at your old apartment doing production work, how would you get the drums done??
nice work !!!
Amazing!
yesss this is the video we wanted wooooo
Finally!! I've been waiting for this video 😂
Great video again... Wish you would have put a db meter on the desk during the tests!
That would have been the addition to finish it off. Good call.
Wow… great job! There is one thing im not shure i understand… thé part where is thé speaker it self! It seems to be larger then the other part of thé inside cabinet. Where is the whole. And how do you swap off thé speaker? Isn’t it screwed? Thanks

That's pretty amazing....however....it would have been great if you also used a DB meter so we could see the difference in volumes in all 3 stages.
This is awesome. Love the design. only thing I'd have to figure out how to incorporate would be how to accommodate combo amps as opposed to a dedicated speaker into a build.
Just run a cable from the combo head to the iso cab?
Totally possible, but with limitations. I expect a similar build would work, but you'd need to take into account the fact that combo amps are most often open-back, which uses the room to enhance bass response.

How about using ACRYLIC instead of wood? Do you think would it work?
I've got a rivera silent sister inside of a sound proof flight case.... Its great, I can crank at 50w engl thunder on full blast and it's about as loud as my TV on normal levels, get great tones through the mic.
I am trying to do this with my silent sister. Which case do you use? Any links? Any tips?
Can you list the dimensions of the actual box sizes?
Modellers always make a big deal about how different speaker cabinets sound different. What speaker cabinet (Marshall 4x12, Orange, open vs closed back etc...) do you think your isocab sounds like? Hope my question makes sense! Love your videos dude!
He said in the other video he swaps speakers in and out all the time, so it could likely sound like many cabinets
Hi Im about to build an iso cab, your video has given me inspiration, can you help with dimensions, regards Rich
4:38 I'm tempted to run this signal through a cab IR and see if it sounds normal 😂
Not to say you couldn't do it but good call hiring out the tolex job. I did a couple cabs a long time ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever worked on haha
Don't mind me, just here to help out with the algorithm! 😂
p.s. awesome video as always! 🤘
I love my smallbox!

heeey, greetings from chile!
Greetings!

@nimrodian cool, very interesting trick 🙂
A mic between the 2 boxes would hear a muffled sound. The monitor trick described by nimrodian will get you some interesting sounds though and if the monitors are loud and you're playing close enough, this will still allow you to get some cool feedback.
@@AnAmericanGuitarist thanks mate 👍
Sell the plans IF you want to, pretty sure people would buy them and you would then be rewarded for your smart idea! :)
at first i was like that not even sound proof butt after the test i see it does help a tv more loud l0l
Thats like ola englund levels of volume
Would have been helpful to use a dB meter so we could see exactly what the volume differences were.
Two notes captor x and some great IR’s could do the magic to .. just saying 😊
WOW! :)
Everyone! Hear My Words!
...... impulse responses.
Would love to hear a comparison of a clean fender (with strat or Tele) head into iso box versus into a normal small 1x12 In the room
EARPLUGS OR YOU WILL REGRET IT IN THE FUTURE
👍😃🤘😎
Sell it in kit form
😦😦😦😦😦😦
should've mesaured it with Smaart or something similar to have real SPL data
