  • One of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works is 'The Bedroom', which he painted in 1888. In order to preserve it for the future, it is thoroughly examined.
The Van Gogh Museum has been conducting exhaustive technical research into the paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh in its collection for many years now. In this video you'll get a behind the scenes look of the research.

After doing a search on this online it seems the red blanket on the bed is also painted with vermillion. Although we don't know it's exact original appearance, It doesn't however seemed to have darkened from a bright red to a dull purpleish earthy colour common with many darkening vermillions.
What was note worthy with the restoration process is that they were unable to remove the varnish from the red blanket area because the varnish had become part of the paint, possibly because the red blanket was perhaps only barely touch dry when the painting was varnished and the varnish soaked into this portion.
It might be worth while investigating as to whether not the varnish mixed into the oil paint (as opposed to just being applied on top) could have stopped the colour change. Many earlier paintings have used vermillion but not all have darkened. Perhaps there was a lost trick of the trade to avoid this.

I went to Van Gogh museum yesterday and they lent the painting to Tokyo for a few months! hahaha so bad luck. Fortunately i live here and I can go again! Amazing artist with a very sad life! My lovely Vincent

Really well done. I'm always amazed at the VGM's conservation work. Steady hands!

From the test results showing mercury and sulphur I'd assume that the reddish tint of the floor comes from the use of vermillion which is well known to darken in the presence of sunlight.

this is such a problem that artists paints now are given a light-fast rating. One of the major reasons for the price difference between cheaper amateur quality paint and the more expensive professional quality paint is due to expected permanence of colour. When artificial colours were first produced towards the end of the 19century it was not realized how poor the colour permanence actually was.

How many years do you need to study discoloration...2 years before coming to this conclusion?? And how about an apology for preserving it so badly for decades.

***** More than likely, van Gogh would have had no idea that the red paint was not lightfast. Wherever it has been for the past 125 years, more than likely the owners didn't know it wasn't lightfast either - ANY exposure to light would have resulted in fading...

Billy Claire I'm not talking about van Gogh...watch the bloody video. They say it has to do with the continous artificial light in the last couple of decades.

ITS KIND OF INTERESTING TO SEE HOW PAINTINGS ARE INVESTIGATED IM HECTOR OROZCO AND IAM A PAINTER, AND I THINK IS NECESSARY TO BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU OWN AN ORIGINAL MASTERPIECE
