"A franchise where you're either a pirate, a marine, or f***ed" has to be one of the best written lines lol
Its even better because its 100% true
I mean, the revolutionaries exist
It's so true though. RIP all those poor extras constantly getting beat up or lectured at

"Japanese for 'targeted at young boys' and English for 'beloved by grown men'" is such an accurate description of the shounen genre.

@@patperez1446Sailor Moon
Honest Trailers living up to its name. 😮
The anime has over 1000 episodes. 26 years ago, they were young boys.
I guess that's what happens when:
1- Most of the cast loves the source material
2- The showrunner loves the source material
3- The original author is involved and has overseeing privileges
What's insane is that nobody thought of that before...
They most likely did, the contractual clause about the author supervising the adaptation is a known thing.
The question why One Piece is created under such a clause while other adaptations weren't is too interesting to just write it off like this.
9 times out of 10 absolute shitshows are because of executive meddling wanting to reach "a wider audience" and sacrificing their actual core audience. The other 1 is directors like uwe boll who are arrogant enough to think they can do better than the source material.
If only Game of Thrones and Cowboy Bebop had that........
@@HolyknightVader999 Add Witcher to that
The showrunner does not love source material, they love money. And they would have changed it if they could; of that I can assure you.
“You want to be king of the sailors, not king of the pirates.” To be fair, Luffy’s bizarre conception of what a pirate is supposed to be in his mind is heavily influenced by the impression left upon him by Shanks and his crew. Whom tended to behave like adventurous rebels with hearts of gold (basically Aladdins on water). Whom were also a glorified vigilante militant group of anti-world government anarchists and freedom fighters (think Robin Hood) than typical pirates. With the other pirates in Luffy’s perspective being a bunch of dishonorable sea-faring thugs and bloodthirsty warlords.
Luffy a yonko now so proud of our crew
I was so confused and frustrated by Luffey's open obsession with pirates that I read some manga lore from Wikipedia to realize that "pirate" in One Piece is less about actual piracy and more about social rebellion against authority. I do wish the show would have hinted at that. Even then, it's still weird that in a universe where an entire world government opposes pirates, that Luffey would jump atop a random stranger's dining table and boast such ambitions.
And the Nika Fruir
I think a pirate in this world is any sailor who does not abide by absolute authoritarian rule.
@@BradTheAmerican Yeah it is weird, but that's just because Luffys stupid dawg. He doesn't think before he speaks.

Hey his mom was nice! And his sister was solid. Though his Mother in Law was horrible.
@@aeis3007 Mother in law? The wedding didn't get through...
It's so much worse.
It worked because the creator was deeply involved, the cast loved their character, respected said characters and didn’t talk down to the audience.
You said it all. Is so simple and yet, we can count with 1 hand the good adaptations from anime/comics. Is a good thing that Netflix kept the Sandman´s formula and make the creator be the one who makes the choices.
And I think One Piece works for all ages and is relatable in various ways for everyone. (I have to add - the cast was perfect, their commitment and acting great and involving the creator might've been just what was needed to make a live-adaptation work, like you said.)
curious what did you mean by didn't talk down to the audience?
Give props to the showrruners and script Writers too, they all love the series and it shows
Did it actually work tho? 🤔
"Nami is messed up because her parents died and they one-pieced her guardian." is probably the most tragic yet funniest sentence in this video aside from the Shonen one
Technically "Sanji is messed up because he was abandoned by his parents" is simultaneously:

Right? Bunny wouldn’t like that.
There's actually a good reason why they couldn't just sail into the Grand Line that wasn't covered in this version; the Grand Line is flanked on both sides by the Calm Belt, where the water is always completely still and wind never blows, making navigating it on ships that use sails nearly impossible. What's more, the calm waters attract a highly concentrated number of sea beasts looking for a place to sleep and don't like to be disturbed, so the only safe way to enter the Grand Line is through Reverse Mountain.

Love how they actually have luffy saying "im gonna be king of the pirate" on each and every episodes 😂 so true to the source material and anime..
I'm both extremely happy and irritated beyond belief that they didn't change/alter Luffy much. I never got full invested in the anime because of how irritating Luffy can be and that didn't change for the live action version. However if Luffy wasn't that way the show would have flopped with it's core audience. Because fans came first and the show wasn't catered to me I have hope that a series I'm passionate about will be adapted faithfully. Who am I kidding this was probably lightening in a bottle that will never happen again outside this series.
I hate it...and I don't understand the love for it. It doesn't do OP justice.
@@Legacyartist they changed Luffy. If you have watched the show I don't know why you still think it's the same Luffy. Luffy is the only one they can't translated to LA as it is without making him a brain damaged teen, while other still keep majority of their original personality
The only similarity between both version is that he's still a witty guy full of positivity, but even the way they express and handle it is different

one might say it's almost cartoon-esque, in a show about a guy with cartoon powers
Yeah and it did it without getting too over the top. But with that my one worry is that what they're gonna do when/if the Netflix One Piece gets to the more over the top parts of the manga/anime. But for now I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt because of how good Season 1 was
@darien5186 RUclips asked me to rate your comment. 😅
@@KanohiVahi The plan is to only do about half of the story so far, over six seasons, and then end it there. I don't know enough about the manga or anime to know where it gets too crazy for live action, but they've apparently thought about it and seem to think that's what they should do.
The reason this turned out so well is because Oda has a Morality Clause in his contract. A Morality Clause is unheard of in Hollywood because it means that Oda has the right to approve of every change to source material, and if the studio goes behind his back to do something like, for example, make romance between Straw Hats, he can pull the plug on the entire show. So everything in OPLA S1 had been approved by Oda himself
danngg didnt know that even exists
@@Nopeasaurus Hollywood is really lucky most authors don't know that exists.
@@Nopeasaurus And also because they have a genuine fan producing the show.
Imagine thinking you know the material and fans better than the creator and changing things lol
Of course he could still be pressured into making changes. They could still threaten not to produce the show.
The "Character Development" line was brutal and perfect.
I mean.... it's pretty great character development.
Facts looking forward to it
i am glad he said only the ANIME while the manga they are noticably bigger but not compared tot the lolo ferrari that the anime does
Emily Rudd, needs to literally method act for Nami in upcoming seasons.
She better get the same character development
I like how they didn't sanitize the weirdness and try to make it any less goofy.
I think I was completely won over when Garp started feeding the transponder snail lettuce
@@combogalisI think the part that really convinced me was was when Garp yeeted that cannonball. It just felt like the show knew that was exactly what everyone wanted Garp to do to prove he’s still the crazy badass of the original series
I think the only part they try to be self-aware is when they point out that Luffy and Sanji screams out their moves
I have not seen it yet, but it is refreshing to see. There was too much "normalizing" done to comic book movies, for example. I get why they did it, but it's a nice change of pace to see them choose instead to lean into it, and recognize that that's part of what makes it all work and why we're here. We've had enough of toned down, realistic. We're here for the silliness and a bit of weird.
"When you love being on boats, but not doing crime. That's called sailing. You want to be king of the Sailor's." Haha, that one got me good. This was my thought exactly. Every time Luffy explained "I'm a different kind of pirate."

After thousands of hours watching this series, the line: "You wanted to be the king of sailors" broke me because it never have crossed my mind 😅
I know, right? Cracked me up too.
But even in the real world people need licences and permission from local and governmental authorities to set say and not getting such permission makes you a pirate so technically Luffy is still a pirate.
He's not even much of a sailor. He wants to be the king of fucking around at sea with his buddies.
@@shridharbiju7370 That's still just operating a boat without a permit.
It could be said that Luffy wasn't really a pirate until Water 7 when he attacked government officials. If not he was DEFINITELY a pirate after Enies Lobby. But in the One Piece world all you need to do to qualify is raise a Jolly Roger.
Can we appreciate the line, "Wait, the butler actually did it?" Gets me every time.
I didn't notice until you made a joke about the spinning camera but that's a really big improvement on the rapid quick cuts we get from most actions scenes. It keeps the camera dynamic while actually letting us see the action, but it's still chaotic enough to cover up some less than perfect choreography.
One of the longest running jokes in the manga/anime is that many characters, especially the villains, have their own unique ridiculous laugh. I didn't notice before, but maybe they tried to somewhat adapt that into live action. Really cool attention to detail
Most of the characters in the adaptation don't have a specific laugh. The only noticeable ones are the fishmen.
Luffy was once have one.. it is "shishishi" but idk why, Oda change it to more casual laugh..

The funniest part about both the live action and this video is how, without context, people somehow think Coby is like Sasuke and Luffy's rival, or that Garp is evil.
He even implied Roger was evil
Clearly, the channel didn't do their research.
I'm pretty sure Coby will be the one arresting Luffy in the end. From the start Oda established parallels between Luffy and Roger. Coby being trained by the man who captured Roger isn't a coincidence I think. So in a way, he's the closest thing to a rival for Luffy (unless of course I missed something, I'm a little behind on the manga, only starting Wano now - please don't spoil haha)
@@misterwhyte calling garp the man who captured roger is a bit of a stretch tho.
@@matejmatkovic7712 It's very likely that Roger let himself be captured because he was dying, yes. It's been established that gear 2 hurts Luffy's health significantly, so I think Oda is already setting up for Luffy getting terminally ill and letting himself be captured by Koby.

I would like to note that Coby being a _rival to Luffy_ is definitely new to the live action series, and is surprisingly awesome.
It... _sort of_ happens in the manga. Sort of.
It's just a slow, slow, slow, slow, slow burn.
in the manga, Koby (and Helmeppo) stories are covered in the weekly manga cover page, the Live action just adapted it while the anime pretty much just ignored it completely
It's really not new to the live-action series at all. It's in the manga, just spread out over literally 20 years real-time.

The secret to live action anime is the same secret used for most anime adaptations of manga.
Don't change anything. We already like the story, the characters, and the tone. JUST USE GOOD ACTORS, GOOD SPECIAL EFFECTS, AND TELL THE STORY.

But he does do crime. He just doesn't like screwing over decent people. He's chaotic good, not lawful good. You've also got to remember that this is written for a Japanese audience, where obeying rules and those socially above you is much much more important than in the US.
@@Phanthief95 yeah, luffy assaulted a celestial dragon, stole gold in skypeia, kidnapped rebecca and shirahoshi, destroyed properties in every arc, ran away from restaurant bills, shot down the world govt flag and declared war against anyone who will take his friends, prison break from Impel down..
These are just the ones that are on top of my head, there are a lot more.
Luffy is a good person but he is still a legitimate pirate.

0:38 was such a accurate depiction of shounen you had me laughing so hard 😂
This show has a 10/10 soundtrack
Zoro constantly napping is recurring thing in the anime series so they got that down perfectly. It pays off when they Whiskey Peak in season 2 😂
he keeps the night watch on the ship that is why he sleeps during the day
But they forgot him losing his way
@@prathapcharanhe mentions that he got lost when trying to find his way back Kaya's mansion. That's how he ran into Luffy.
@@TheRockerX and even then, the getting lost gimmick wasn't all that prominent at that point of the Manga.
@@prathapcharan got lost 2/3 times in Syrup village arc
"That's sailing you want to be king of the sailors" 😂😂😂😂
“This girl is poisoned!” Haha watch out for smooth admiral 😂
I want more Buggy! Jeff Ward killed it in the role.
Can't wait to see Impel Down Buggy xD
You actually can't enter by going simply to the east or west, you need to head south-west from the east blue, while also avoiding getting stranded in the calm belt or other spots.
To be fair, that sounded like he miss-spoke. You likely sail right past the equator if your focus is traveling purely East to West. I presume he meant the Red Line with regards to finding it by sailing East to West. Possible he's just not familiar enough with the show to know the difference ;)
So the entire world is divided in half by this area, and there's only one place on the entire planet where you can travel through it? That must suck for shipping companies who need to deliver anything to the opposite hemisphere.
@@EpicNerdsWithCameras that's why most of the blues are rather isolated from the rest of the world.
Though SPOILER the World government has figured out ways to get ships through the calmbelt easily.
One piece world is obviously flat
@@EpicNerdsWithCameras it worse, the entire world is split is 1/4, that's why there's east/west/south/north blue. And there's only one way to go forth between safely, So each 1/4 is pretty much isolated.
Each part is self sustained and looking at how dangerous the sea is, it's doubtful shipping company would go very far from each islands.
the "ah so desuka" punch line had layers 🤣
MY FAVORITE PART LMAO💀
In all seriousness, this was the most entertaining show I’ve seen in years.
It didn't have to be perfect, it just had to be One Piece... and it succeeds in that goal.
ayee we upgrade from "anime for kids" to "live action for tweens" now 👏👏👏
How funny you mentioned "King of the Sailers". In Taiwan, the original title was "King of the Pirates" (海賊王) first introduced, but due to some licensing issues and disputes, they had to switch to another publisher but couldn't use the original title. So the new publisher changed the title to "King of the Sailers" (航海王).
Please say "YO! Gotta go, gotta gooooooo....!" That theme song didn't get enough recognition.
It's honestly a better theme than it gets credit for. It was a GOOD opening rap in a sea of really awful opening raps.
3:32 I love that they included that part. 😂 I was literally like Oda must have hated that character, that's like the biggest letdown I've heard of in a anime for a side character lol. Especially when they built her up.
5:10 wow. 😂
The guy playing Arlong stole EVERY scene that he was in. Get that man his award NOW
fans were criticizing the choice not making fishmen (especially Arlong) cgi to make them absolutely tall like in the anime. then they forgot all about it because the acting was top notch
Fully agree! The actor gave Arlong some serious presence!
Villainous Charisma was off the charts. Arlong and Mihawk were *Chef's Kiss- Flawless.
@@3RayfireDon’t forget Buggy too. Jeff Ward nailed him!
Yes, Arlong is way more appealing in live action than in the anime.
When you said "Literally punch God in the face" I was expecting a clip with Enel. It's been a while, but I think Luffy punched him in the face.
The folks who wrote this video didn't know about the calm belt, so I don't think they watched the anime
@@glitchedgirI
To be fair I think they were joking about how the live action doesn't explain that
@@jasonjones3328 maybe? That would be funny, though I'm not sure they were actually going for that, lol
@@jasonjones3328
It's also not the equator though, and this much is shown by the clip they were showing here depicting the grand line... If you look at the N, S, E, W signs it's clear that the Grand Line isn't the equator.
Though it doesn't contradict his point... You could still find it by simply sailing in one direction.
That makes sense because Enel is the Rap God
Just feel the need to point this out, Sanji **did not get abandoned by his parents** it was the opposite in fact, he abandoned them because they were crazy.
Uhhhh technically it's a bit of both. His dad saw him on the way out and basically said "Get out, don't come back and don't ever say you're related to me, you're a disgrace and an embarrassment to my name "
spoiler:
Only his dad was Batshit bananas. His mom was a sweet but ill gal who died trying to give Sanji a normal childhood when he was born.
Technically, he escaped and his older sister convinced him to go.
@@margarethmichelina5146 And broke him out and gave him the opening to actually escape.
@@nousername191Indeed shout out to Baeju.
NAH, calling Coby the "overly serious rival" is too funny
"You want to be king of the sailors."
That hits different once you remember there's a big difference between sailors and pirates.
I guess someone in this universe has to go in for honest trade.
It's just that we never get to see them.
Technically, Luffy and his crew are just adventures. 😂
@@supersizesenpai But specifically adventurers who refuse to be bound by laws. You could maybe call them outlaws I guess?
@@Keated how about outlaw adventurers.. LOL
@@Keated Yes, outlaws who sail on ships! Why, you could probably call them... pirates! :O
I can't tell if the epic voice guy calling Buggy "Buddy" was on purpose or not😂

That king of the sailors one really got to me!❤😂
From the studio behind the Cowboy Bebop live action series comes a show that exceeded all expectations!
*defies all expectations. if it exceeded them. it would be godawful instead of good
@@InfernosReaperSorry. I meant defies.
@@InfernosReaper I don't know. I think most people's expectations were insanely low already.
Not to nitpick the nitpickers, but OP was right. The bar was REALLY low, easily exceeded. But no one was expecting it to pole vault over a bar set on the ground 😂
Cowboy bepop wasn’t even that bad idk why ppl hated it. Resident evil was so much worse. Witcher has turned to garbage thanks to the idiot in charge wanting to bring “modern problems” into the story and forcing cavil to quit was beyond stupid. Hopefully bioshock show isn’t a massive letdown
3:38 - it feels ironic that Ussop’s dad was on Shanks’ crew and raised Luffy like a son with them.
Also, Luffy's dad spends more time with his supposed to be dead "brother" than Luffy.
@@margarethmichelina5146Luffy also spends more time with his mom (croc) than his dad!
