This was one of the last games wayne and I wrote. We were trying to negotiate with Nintendo to allow it to be an official release but that fell thru. By today's standards the graphics and sound are rough but we used what was available. Thanks for posting this.

Hello ! Great, you were one of the authors of that game ? I've bought recently a kaypro 10 to learn the programming on it and to understand how it was made...) Maybe later, will you answer some questions about vintage programming ? )) I think Kaypro and TRS have something in common - as I remember it was too a Z-80/Cp-m machine ?

You did a nice job, given the limitations of the hardware. The play is quite smooth.

Was it flickering much on a real machine?
Any way to avoid videocpu memory access conflict?

I think this is pretty amazing looking. I doubt it could be done better.

Despite using a fully black and white pseudo-graphics mode and only having one sound channel instead of two, this port really gives both the Atari 2600 and Mattel Intellivision ports a run for their money and is a highly respectable effort; it's a damn shame Nintendo didn't license it.

Thank you all for the warm comments and watching my video. I just did a full play through of the game here -> ruclips.net/video/2ZFaZbUvAEU/видео.html for you to enjoy all the levels, with commentary.

Wow, despite the low res graphics, this looks like it plays a surprisingly good game. I expected a really low framrate but it runs really nice. I'm a coco guy but have always been interested in the other TRS computers too.

I LOVED this game and get so nostalgic watching this and hearing the sounds. It may be "rough" but there is something so pure about it. Don't get me wrong, I loved Mario Brothers too, but this is like going home.

This reminds me of a decent port of Space Invaders for the Commodore PET. Huge limitations in the hardware were addressed by smart programmers to make a good game.

Blocky, yes, but it looks extremely playable. That's more than can be said for several of the more mainstream console releases!

Incredible ! A good game on such a primitive computer ! I collect and use vintage computers - and modern people laugh at me, when I say a 486/dx4-100mhz or 286/20mhz is a good gaming machine for me - but TRS-80 model 1.... incredible !

If this game really runs on a model 1 tr80 computer with no upgrades, then i take my head off because in this case, it's amezing since the trs 80 model 1 can only display text, but by combining, upper & lower case letters, symbols, icon's etc,,, with eachother, sami graphics can be generated, for sound, the cpu can send commando signals passtrough a cassette deck to tell your plugged in headphone how te generate sound, that's amezing.

+johneygd Yes, this game is really for TRS-80 Model 1. It uses alternate character set for graphics (also called Pseudographics) that was commonly used in the 1980-ies for having faster graphics modes.

Was this a licensed port? My guess is no, but since the title *is* "Donkey Kong" I thought I'd ask.

    • @Hirudov
      @Hirudov  7 лет назад

Yes, this is unlicensed port of the game. The authors didn't acquire official license from Nintendo and people had it through "unofficial" ways on their TRS-80s. Later it was released into the Public Domain. In this video I didn't manage to get to all the levels. Check out this video - ruclips.net/video/2ZFaZbUvAEU/видео.html for the missing level.

Sure, this is a pretty good port of an 80's game for a system made in the 70's.
But for modern day standards, this port is absolute bullshit in comparison to the arcade version.
