Another "beautiful" lesson Rupert...thank you. Intonation and variation in tone is something I've really worked at because, as you said, my language hasn't got those characteristics you've explained. Learning connected speech/discours, linking R, the schwa sound, consonant to vowel sound or consonant to consonant sound etc improve our ability to speak and be understood.
Thanks Fabiana! It's great to hear that you have worked hard on this because you are right - some languages do not share these features of speaking and extra work is required - but it is worth it 💪👍😀
... hi Rupert! ... possibly best fitted to benefit from your lecture are people who have an ear for music, are good singers and, preferably lovers of classical music ...
It's interesting that you should say that, because when I have taught students 1 to 1 on intonation skills, they have often told me they feel like they are singing when they speak English in the way I teach them! It can be a barrier to people who come from countries when the language is spoken in a more monotone manner, as they can feel "silly" when they vary their intonation so much. However, it is quite true that there is an element of music in the way English people speak :)
Hi Rupert, Thank you so much for this lesson. I did not ever think of intonation as you taught today. Now I can relate to why and how native or good English speakers speak in high and low patches. It is interesting, I must learn more about this and earn some proficiency. I am grateful to you.
Hi teacher. Could you please explain in the next video the meaning and use the verb construction past modal+perfect infinitive, specifically "would have had to have been"? Thanks
Wow, what an amazing question! It's a possible combination, but not used very often! I'm thinking to do some "shorts" to cover some of these more specific questions that I'm getting. Keep watching my channel 😉
English is very hardest to study especially in written in sentences and sometimes people in RUclips is making fun at me because I wrote down wrong like preying is for wild animals, but the sentence is preying for people are hurt by hurricanes Milton, but I am tried very hardest to understand.
thank you for your time and efforts ,but these concepts aren't the main concerns of an English learner like me , maybe you say I can't understand its importance ,definitely you are the teacher and it's your channel ,but believe me it's not my concern and my friend's !
Hi Amir! Thanks for your comment. I completely respect your point of view. I hope you find my future videos more relevant to your needs. Best wishes Rupert
The video you made is great but this is not the secret, most teachers explain it very well. If you can help indeed,it would be better if you permit Online learners to download it for free.
However cynical, critical and judgemental it might be, I personally think that asserting outright that there's a "secret" lying beneath English learning which teachers NEVER tell students, -but you do-, denotes an airs-and-graces attitude. What makes you think that other teachers don't tell what you tell? There are countless teachers in every corner of this globe that is going to hell in a handbasket, so that overstatement of yours is grossly pretentious. I hope people come to understand this. I just want to let people know that not everything that emerges on a RUclips channel from apparently gentle and well-learnt and scholarly people is necessary true.
If you go to any English language school in the world and ask the teachers "How do you feel about teaching pronunciation?", most would say they are scared to (not all, but most). I used to be like that, too. There are so many regional variations and it's too subjective. Of all these speaking skills, intonation is the worst served. When I write these RUclips videos, I am always thinking "Can I teach an advanced English speaker something new?" I believe what I have taught in this video will be new to a lot of people who have been learning English even for a long time, and that it could make a positive difference for many. The point of the title is not to put other teachers down, or to say I am better than them, but it is to indicate to viewers that this video might contain teaching that they've not come across before. I hope that helps you understand where I am coming from and I apologize for any offense I may have caused.
