- Jeff delves into the 1911 shooting of Lodi business owner Charles Sollars committed by Lodi Sentinel newspaper owner Samuel Axtell in broad daylight in a downtown alley. The shooting occurred after a decades-long feud, for what reasons are not fully known. The straw that broke the camel's back was when a scandalous story concerning Axtell appeared in print on the pages of the Stockton Evening Mail newspaper.

It’s amazing how much history gets forgotten in the passage of 110 years or so. It’s crazy how stories like this just disappear until people like me did them up. Lol.

Lodi has been hit with multiple murders lately. Around the corner from that shooting was another shooting where a junky realtor shot a homeless man in the same manner. One on south Sacramento st where a man walked into a business and shot a man working in a rubber company. Even a disgruntled man that hired a hitman to kill a doctor that treated his wife and later died from that treatment. So much goes down in that little town, so it's never boring.

Senseless killings- the things people will kill for. Pride and ego. This was a fascinating story, and very well covered as always. We were riveted the whole time.
It brings to mind "The Seven Deadly Sins"......

Very surprising that even back in 1911, a guy could do deliberate cold-blooded murder, and not only not get executed, but be back on the streets in a relatively short amount of time

Thanks Jeff for another great video. Like you I am watch and follow lots of true crime/murder shows and cases online. I love the forensics and seeing how law enforcement catches killers. I am engrossed in the Idaho 4 case and several others. I like to learn about the missing persons cases/mysteries as well. When the 'bad guys' get caught it makes me feel like a little justice is done.

@@jbenziggy Dad told me he was new to the force when he and two other officers came across a young mother who had tried to kill herself and her two children. She and the children were in a parked car and would have bled to death if the officers hadn't found them. The paper printed the photos of everything (something unthinkable today).

I went to grammar school in Kettleman city and graduated in 1958. We lived om a farm about 5 miles away. Their were 4 other students in my class that graduated. It wasn't a one room schoolhouse as you might think the total enrollment was about 350 students but a lot of their parents were seasonal farm hands so in those days not a lot graduated. I am probably the only college graduate from there. I had always wondered who the founder of the community was and now sir you have enlightened me, thank you. 😎👍

@@jbenziggy That's about right Jeff, when we moved there in 1950 about half of the property was desert right up to the hills and Dad and his crew plowed up sage brush to put in crops. Jeff never heard of this story before. Sollars and Axtell’s troubles were awful. I have been shot Jeff. And when happens. You don’t even realize that it happened. Other than seeing the blood. That’s why they used firing squads for years for execution. Thanks for sharing.

Can you do a video on the Hill House (Inn) in Lodi? Jane the trustee could give you info on the Hill family ...idk if she'll give info on the "treatment" of the house since then but that's also interesting.

Interesting. At the top of the building with the advertising on the side, it appears to say Frieberger (sorry if I misspelled it) Motors. I can’t help but think that is some relation of David Frieberger of Engine Masters and Roadkill Garage since the Roadkill Garage appears to be filmed in the Lodi area. Do you have any information on that family history?

Upon further investigation I found that the Roadkill Garage location is in the grape growing area near Earlimart, CA, quite a bit farther south, not near Lodi. Still there may be a connection because of the similarity of geography, climate, and the grape growing enterprise of both areas, and of course, the name on the building associated with “Freiburger Motors”.
I have coffee at the cafe shop where the old bank building use to be. I never knew abut this piece of local history for us Lodians.
Such a sad story. It just goes to show what happens when people let their emotions override their common sense. Better have ALL of the evidence before attempting to pass Judgment from one's own hands, Axtell found that out the hard way & ruined an innocent families lives & livelihood simply because he jumped to the wrong conclusions.

So Axtel was given life in prison but was paroled. How long was he in prison before he was paroled? Maybe he had a sweet deal if he knew prominent people.

I agree. It stinks when “progress” wipes out these interesting buildings. Like for instance the movie theater where my wife and I had our first date? It was a historically important building, having been made for a particular kind of film to be shown, that was short lived? It is now a parking lot.

I gotta say: I m from Scotland and when I was in America in 2003 I just HAD to try Root beer and the Hershey bar.
I found the Root beer to be vile and had to stop myself from vomiting.
Hershey bar was sour and disgusting to my taste.

@@jbenziggy I bought the root beer from a bar in Florida's Disneyworld and the next day I got two Hershey bars from a 24hour gas station just off the freeway. Didn't try them together LOL but maybe they both would have tasted better that way.
Chocolate where I come from is either plain or milk... never sour like the Hershey but if that's what you guys have been eating since childhood then its gonna be a familiar taste to you.

As always I start my Sunday with History Hunters and as always another fascinating piece of history.
Seems Axtel still had 1800’s Wild West mentality. Not only did his actions ruin his life, forever change his wife’s life but caused his sister suicide. For the Sollars they lived of a life of grief and tragedy 🎭. Their home and business long gone and forgotten and all that’s left are their headstones all for pulling over to do the right thing. I found Axtel on Find A Grave with no picture of his grave. I wonder who leaked the information of this inappropriate relationship? Why would the Stockton Newspaper print it wasn’t Charles? Odd don’t you think?

Maybe it was Axtels sister who committed suicide over her brother’s conviction.

As a current employee of the News-Sentinel, I can assure y'all that we don't get into feuds like that these days. I did once have a publisher in a different town that liked to say "Never get into a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel," but that was a while ago, and I don't think we have the relevance anymore.
Fun facts about the bear atop the Lodi Arch: the original was papier-mâché, made for a parade float by the Stockton parlor of the Sons of the Golden West for a parade. After the parade it was stolen by the Lodi branch of the organization and hauled up to the top of the arch. It's been effectively replaced over the years after many refurbishments, and is now made of plaster. It was most recently repaired this year, but its paint was replaced with gold leaf in 2002. It originally faced south, intentionally facing its rear end toward Sacramento as a symbolic display of disrespect toward the state leaders, but faced north after a mid-century facelift. There were plenty of comments when they put it back up a few months ago about how shameful it is that it now faces north.

"... thought he was a great man." Delusions of grandeur (narcissism), obsessive-compulsive (neckties), and no remorse (lack of empathy). A textbook psychopath. Those are born, not made. A bash to the head as a kid isn't going to cause it but a dysfunctional upbringing can exacerbate it because they are easily triggered by minor events of which others would not think much, if anything. Another great episode, Jeff! I love this channel!

I especially liked this video. Axtell was a typical Liberal of his time, being a newspaper owner with an agenda -- and pushing to close saloons for one thing. Being easily angered and intolerant was another common trait of this Lib. Would like to see more videos on topics like this in the future. It relates so well to current times. And was thoroughly researched in every aspect.

Great video. Lodi Memorial also contains the gravesites of James and Juliet Brier. They are my first cousins albeit 4x removed. James and Juliet were members of the Jayhawker Party who elected to cross, and give name to, Death Valley in the 1850's. There is a publication called Death Valley Heroine that documents the ill fated adventure. James Brier went on to develop Protestant churches and is credited as one of the UOP founders. His Brother William Wallace Brier is also an early day pioneer in Alameda County.
"Protestant churches"; that's a pretty broad field. Does that mean sometimes 18:24 he would found Methodist Churches, and sometimes Presbyterian Churches, and then later some Congregational Churches? Do you know which specific churches were founded by him, and if they are still in operation today?
@@kirkmacarthur80030:00 I am not sure which Methodist churches James Brier founded. He is credited with delivering the first Protestant Sermon in California. It took place in late 1849 or early 1850 in SoCal. The family was recovering from the Death Valley hardships before moving North.
His Brother William founded multiple Presbyterian Churches. One of his churches is the original church in Livermore. William was also one, if not the first, of the Superintendents of Education in Alameda County. There is a William Wallace Brier school in Fremont, CA

It amazes me the Stories you come across. I love that you dig to d your Homework. I really appreciate that about you. Stories that we would probably Never know. And that Story would be Lost Forever. We were going through Texas & my Husband says, anything anyone want to do in Particular??? My Matthew pipes up & Says...i wanna see the Book Depositary & the Grassy knoll...he was maybe 10 years old. So we Headed to Dallas. I Loved those days of my Life. & Really Miss it. The kids are all grown & my Husband Gone to soon. I know sometimes i rattle on. I guess that's what an ol woman does?? My next door neighbour who moved in 5 yrs ago, is very self entitled. He made that know with 3 months of moving in. On top of that he is a policeman 👮♂️ who obviously should know better.
He is the same age as my son 35, he has zero respect. It’s his first home, and he and his wife think they are the greatest. Thanks for this story Jeff. If you post next Sunday, that will be Monday ( Christmas Day here) I will have to watch the following day.

My great ,great grandfather was murdered by some railroad hobos in Lodi way back and I think is buried in Lodi cemetery someplace.. was suppose to catch a bus back to Oklahoma ..they robbed him and chopped his body in pieces . His name was Alexander Henry .If your ever back there again.
Behind the sollars grave marker was Jahant, identified be intrested knowing about that family. A road in acampo is named after them. David Kettleman at the end of video was nice too
The fear...adrenaline alone kept him alive long enough to reach help. Truly tragic. (Is Kettleman City associated with that family? It's one of my stopping off points on the way to/from Tahoe!)
Yes it’s the same family. You must have not watched all the way to the end. There’s also a street in Lodi named after the Kettlemans.

Cooler heads prevail indeed. If only that were the case in this tragedy. If only people would talk about their problems, so many deaths wouldn't have happened. Sad. And, I got to say, if people had the Lord in their lives, stuff like this wouldn't happen.
On a happier subject, in response to what you said (and showed) about the advertising lettering on the sides of buildings, I used to see so many of those on the buildings in my hometown of Morristown Tennessee. Wouldn't be surprised if some were still there. Have you been to East Tennessee, Jeff?
