- I found this on the BBC Archive Facebook and I thought I would upload it here! I'm not quite sure what year this is from but I'd guess like 1982ish. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Note: I DO NOT OWN ANYTHING USED IN THIS VIDEO.
His soloing on "Mr. X" (Ultravox) still sends the shivers. Great, great musician and artist.
I still remember my parent's strict diet of 1960's sounds, and my sister sitting watching TOTPs. I had no real interest in music until my friend, Steven Louth, passed me an Ultravox cassette one day as we waited for the school bus. That was that.
Billy Currie,,,,, King of the synths!!
And violin
Incredible musician... pure emotion.
His violin/viola was so pioneering.
I loved electronic music as a kid and looked forward to where it was going. Now I turn on commercial radio in the car and warm diahorrea pours out
Mądry i zdolny człowiek 🇵🇱❤️😍
Wow, talk about an unearthed gem...
It's from the BBC series "Riverside" in 1982. Interviewer is Mike Andrews.
Thank you! :D I will be sure to update the description.
This quarter of ultravox played a big part of my childhood
Billy Currie The King!!! =)
such a great artist
Fantastic musician. So much talent!
He's right up there amongst Paul Humphrey's, Eno etc.
Спасибо всем кто организовал интервью и поделился им со всеми поклонниками музыки.
What a great find...thanks for posting.
He's a God of music ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮😮😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Personal Hero
My god, and sitting behind him is an Oberheim OB-X, a Yamaha CS-80, CP-80 and SS-30.
I spotted the Yorkshire accent immediately 😊
I'd guess 1981, as he mentions controlling the sequencing of the synths by VOLTAGE rather than MIDI. The foundations of MIDI were first published in 1981 & first MIDI instruments appeared in 82 ( I think ? )
Midi came out in 1983
I said 1982 based on the fact that Billy talks about making new music and writing. So I think this is early 82 Ultravox were writing Quartet. Also that would explain him talking about voltage control. Since it was early 82 and not 83 when the MIDI came out.
Yes, I had a Sequential circuits P600 from around 1982-83 and it had midi already 😋
no Billy Currie .... no Ultravox!!
Love Ultravox before and after JF
But in different ways.
I feel the same way. Both Midge and John are really talented
Legend.
I didn't know that Billy used a Roland MC-8 (made famous by Hans Zimmer, I think) Microcomposer. Well, it's on the video. I wonder what it was used on? An enormous pain to sequence, apparently.
This band has all my repsect as a musician. They basically spent all their earnings on studio gear.
He's a good ass music genius ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Still it sounds easy. It was way more complicated back in the day programming those synths and sequensers than it is today.
Billy Currie and Jim Kerr. Twins separated at birth.
The good old days of analog. Program the computers for the sounds when playing the synthesizers. Now days it is digital and just program the sounds and and let it play it self.
Underground Warrior now days digital synths just suck
I imagine that no one watching this in 1982 understood what he was talking about :D Kool
Very good point
I did, but nobody else in my school...probably town understood it.
He is actually cool as F*ck
Ultarvox seen 1976 77 seen a lot AFTER WHAT A GREAT BAND
Wow!!! That is amazing!!!!! What was your favorite gig if you don’t mind me asking?
probably 1981 if you see the tech , no ppg in sight but the rage in eden setup , the marshal time modulators in the rack give it away too
It's funny how he sounds like he's talking gobbledygook but I get what he's saying about the programmer. I don't know which computer they were using but I'm guessing he had a programmer writing code (possibly in BASIC) to output the sequence via a CV interface. Electronics and personal computing were the Wild West back then. I made my own MIDI Thru box and switcher (and still use them). It's nice that hardware electronics has bounced-back as a hobby.
Great find. Amazing to see this. 🙏 What year is this? I want to say it’s late ‘70s, but it has to be ‘80s? During the Foxx era, although drum machines were used by Warren, Billy wouldn’t have been using computers, would he?
1982 during the writing for Quartet.
THE BEST
vallance smillie agreed he is the best 💖💖💖
Thank you , someone loves this man
Ultravox heartbeat 💚
I've loved ultravox from the start and still follow midge and co (not ultravox) and always will, because they are a great band
Nice
Could be Jim Kerr's twin brother!
Jim kerr/Liam Brady.
Looks something like Jim kerr
I always thought that Billy Currie would have been better in Tangerine Dream. Higher level of music. His solo work was very nice. In ultravox, those melodies were way too basic for my taste.
