하늘로 날을듯이
길게 뽑은 부연 끝 풍경이 운다
처마끝 곱게 느리운
주렴에 반월이 숨어
아른아른 봄 밤이
두견이 소리처럼 깊어 가는 밤
곱아라 고와라 진정 아름다운지고
호장 저고리 하얀 동정이
화안히 밝도소이다
열두폭 긴 치마가
사르르르 물결을 친다
그대는 어느 나라의
고전을 말하는 한 마리 호접 호접인양
사뿌시 춤추라
아미를 숙이고 나는 이 밤에
옛날에 살아 눈 감고
거문곳줄 골라 보리니
가는 버들인양 가락에 맞춰
흰 손을 흔들지어다
As if about to fly up the skies
The edge of the long lean-to roof stretches out,
Wind-bell tinkles
Hanging gently down.
On the edge of the eaves
The half moon is hidden.
Behind blinds.
Spring night slowly
Grows deeper.
Like the sound of a cuckoo
So fine, oh so fine, truly beautiful
The grand jacket and white collar
Are splendidly bright
Twelve-fold long skirt smoothly
Makes waves
Thou as if speaking of
Some country’s classic tale
Like a butterfly, a butterfly
Dance with light steps
Lowering my eyebrows, I,
On this night
Shall live in the past,
Close my eyes and
Shall pick on the
(Korean) six string harp
Like a thin willow,
In accord with the melody
Shall wave my pale hand.

다섯 개의 초기 가곡 (a. 1945)
- 이 음반을 내면서
나는 1950년에 부산에서 ‘달무리’라는 가곡집을 출판한 바 있으나 책이 몇 군데 서울과 부산의 책방에 배부된 직후에 전쟁이 일어나 종적을 잃어버리고 이 곡들의 존재조차 잊혀지고 말았다.
그 뒤에 한 두곡이 종합가곡집에 실린 적도 있으나 40년이 지난 오늘 나는 이 5개의 가곡을 원형 그대로 음반으로 출반하면서 다시 우리 민족앞에 늦으나마 선보이고 싶어진다.
이 곡들은 1945년 전후하여 작곡되었으며 우리 민족의 그 시기의 작곡적인 소재지를 모색 검토하는데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.
이 곡들을 다시 냄에 있어서 내가 바라는 것은 비록 서양발성법을 구사하는 성악가라 할지라도 약간의 우리 전통음악이나 민요의 선적, 율동적, 색채적인 묘미를 연구해서 불러주었으면 하는 것이다.

- On releasing
In 1950, I had published a collection of Korean songs titled “Misty Moon” in Busan; however, right after the book was distributed to a few bookstores in Seoul and Busan, war broke out and there were no traces left of it, and thus the existence of the songs itself was not even known.
Afterwards, one or two songs had been published in collections of Korean songs, but today, after 40 years, on releasing these five songs in its original copy, I wanted to show them again to our people, even though it may seem a little late, These songs were composed around 1945 and will be of help when looking for inspirational subjects to write of about our people during that era.
In republishing these songs what I hope to achieve is for vocalists, although they may command western style vocalization, to be able to sing them out loud keeping in mind some of the meditative, rhythmic, and colourful charm of our traditional music or folk songs.
