- The famous Canon in D by Pachelbel, performed on 4 violas
When I had the idea to make this video, it was mostly ironic, but I actually loved learning and recording it. It truly exemplifies the simple beauty of instrumental sound and harmony. Why play it on viola? I was curious to hear what it would sound like and in the end I was pleased by the richness and resonance of 4 violas together.
I literally used the violin part for this video, available on IMSLP and probably many other websites. The cello is up an octave to fit the viola's register.

Since I'm not a traumatised cellist, I actually think this piece is beautiful. Not overly harmonically complex (but that would rather be missing the point of a canon). Your rendition of it was wonderful!
This makes us realize viola is so versatile, the cello part sounds great and the violin parts are so rich and beautiful

@@seanwang596 Most people don't even notice and the piece is no less beautiful. Music is not just for pros and experts, it is plenty gorgeous to my ears. I also always appreciate when things don't get too high pitched and squeaky, no shade intended for violinists but the viola is a more comfortable range for me.

@@seanwang596 Everything about the viola being bigger and heavier does indeed make that particular aspect of it harder to master and get good at than violin (not talking difficulty in terms of music pieces or solos, just the raw baseline physics of the instruments). This guy also is not super pro tier, and the piece was not designed for viola to play all the parts. Imperfection is inevitable.
I'm ultra short so a lot of the time I did a lot of my warmup and practice on a student violin that had been restrung with C, G, D, and A strings. Then I'd switch to my gorgeous, resonant concert viola to work on mastering the pieces. I also loved that violas aren't so squeaky and piercing, sensitive ears on that part. It was also nice getting to be 2nd chair violist quickly while we had over 20 violinists just stuck forever jockeying in lower positions. Our 1st chair violist was originally a top-tier violin player who made the team switch ;)
Anyway, repeat that most people will not notice if even the first violinist is not hitting every note exactly the same every time. One can be a music snob about imperfection, but the fact remains most people are not so picky about music.

With all the cello trauma and overplaying at weddings, in ads, and basically in every life situation, it’s easy to forget that this is actually beautiful music. Especially if you dont have the overplayed 2-6 bars but the entire piece.
I am so thankful for this video, as well as all your others, for our young, aspiring violists. They need to both hear and visualize your musicianship. Speaking from a teacher’s perspective, we also shouldn't underestimate the wants of our students by solely utilizing videos of current music or those with fancy dance moves for retention or recruitment. (Although, I will admit I would love to see your fancy footwork sometime, James!!) I am so proud of you, and I loved seeing that exact smile/smirk that you had many years ago.

I thought maybe you would bust into something more snarky or contemporary, but that was actually quite nice all on viola.
It works! And so does the shirt.
I guess you can also wear it over your space suit when the occasion calls for it.
As an alternative, you could put octave strings on the viola and play the Cello part after all. Not sure how well that would sound but I'm all for it, a portable cello that doesn't need its own seat on the plane.

The Viola has a fun note range. Why not get a 5 String Viola tuned CGDAE?
I'm curious which order you recorded the parts in! Bassline/Cello first or one of the melody lines first? I wonder which would be easier.
