Lost WINTER Survival Challenge (NO Food, NO Water, NO Shelter!) | Knife, Saw, Axe, Wire, Rope

- I test my survival skills in the Canadian forest to survive with just the things I carry in my small backpack. I'll survive with just a knife, saw, axe, rope, and some wire! Ocoopa Hand Warmer: www.amazon.ca/dp/B08GQ34XWW?r....
Ocoopa Website: www.ocoopa.com/
We will make a primitive friction fire with a cedar spindle and a cedar base or hearth board. I'll try to shoot or snare grouse or snowshoe hare and cook it over an open fire and build a shelter with materials I find in the woods. I'll build a simple lean-to shelter with sticks and spruce or balsam bows, and make an epic fire to cook wild edibles I find in the forest.

The winter offers sparse resources generally, as most things have either died off, or been burred by the snow. Deer have moved off to winter yarding areas, and bears are deep asleep in their dense. However, some small game still lurks around trying to stay away from frostbite and carry on with the rest of the living.
Thankfully there is plenty of snow to make water, but first a fire is needed to survive as eating snow cools the body and is difficult on the body's system. Thankfully we have a small billy can or steel water pot for boiling water.
Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools. I will show you how to start a fire using primitive techniques and cook a wild grouse over an open fire. Survival is all about making the best of a bad situation. Staying warm and dry is the key to staying alive. After survival is taken care of, it's all about making your situation even better. Finding food, water, and making a shelter is a must to create ultimate survival comfort. I use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the Canadian forest using materials around us like tree branches and dried grass.
I attempt a friction fire using primitive technology - a cedar spindle, hearth board, and some birch bark and cedar shavings for a tinder bundle. Can I get a fire lite in tough conditions?
Can you eat snow? Find out!

You guys are awesome. Ive said it before and I’ll say it again, I wish I lived close to you guys so I could come along on these adventures. The economy is looking pretty sketchy so I have been going deeper and deeper with my knowledge on survival.
If you're lost in the woods for a couple days and it's a life-threatening situation can you take a deer out of season or some animal that's protected would you get in trouble? Or would you be let off the hook because it was an emergency?

Absolutely love your work and Jeremy too. You guys are AWESOME!
I love how you view being in nature, it's refreshing to see videos other than lighting a fire by a shelter and just sitting there. You provide what could be vital information. I always feel super educated after viewing your videos.
I'd reconsider "eating snow", causes more dehydration and uses up body heat. Pack snow in a water bottle or a plastic bag (zip lock is best) and put it in your pocket to melt don't place it directly on skin though. Then while you work it melts giving you the water you need without robbing core temperature. When your shelter is built, start a fire and hang the water bad near the fire to melt faster, not too close or you may melt the bag...
@@TheSkidds the dehydration part? Because the drain of calories to reheat your body after taking in low temperature water is pretty well know and basic physic isnt it?
@@TheSkidds he talks about two things, which is heat consumption which results in calorie loss and dehydration, that's why I asked to clarify to which you were referring. But hey, just start insulting people online, the only thing that gets hurt in that process is your reputation of a grown and educated and well behaved person.

WILL THEY SURVIVE!!?!?!?
well eating snow for water is going to drain a lot of energy, takes energy for your body to warm up the snow.
Yes. You would litteraly die from hypothermia before you dehydrate.
That's what I was thinking too, It's not worth to eat snow, cuz your body spends more energy to heat it up compared to what you get out of it.
Thats because it takes 4 joules of energy to heat up 1 gram of water 1 degree, while it takes 400 joules to transition 1 gram of ice @ 32 degrees F to 1 gram of liquid water @ 32 degrees F.

When you’re lost with no food, water, and shelter, but you have knives, bow saw, axe, cups, pot, bow and arrows, trap wire and the kitchen sink.
Assuming a go bag from viewers isn’t a hard ask. They’re rich enough to have internet connection, and leisure time to find this vid. Not a big stretch.
You could give a lot of people all of those things you mentioned, and they still wouldn’t service without actually preserved food and fresh water. Their ability to make the most of the tools they have and actually find safe food/water in the environment is what’s interesting.

Don't know how I have missed your channels. You came up in a recommendation and so glad you did. I have been into Bushcraft and survival now for 3 or 4 years. Nothing more satisfying than your first bow drill fire. It indeed does seem like a miracle....such a satisfying accomplishment. Great advice to always have snare wire on hand....always. Legal or not when it comes to survival you just do it. I would have started my fire first which would likely have been a mistake. I would probably spent too much time around it warming my "sensitive hands." I don't know how you guys handle the cold. When my hands get cold, I am done. Its ok to eat snow IF you can keep warm, and have quite a bit of food
Its super risky but it might actually help your body increase the body temperature.
@@notavalible1574
Eating snow lowers your temperature, it doesn't increase it. Lol.
Food, however, does.
It's a matter of alternating between the two, eating first.
@@billyandrew its the same thing like drinking cold water during smmer. Your body has to warm it up. So it expends more energy. In turn. It actually heats up.
Water is needed to make your body work. Energy from food (fat, protein carbs, sugars) won’t warm you if you’re dehydrated. The body is complex, your keeping several spinning plates in the air. Not just one.
Great video (as always), and a lot of respect for the bowdrill fire, but if you don't mind me saying; personally, I'm now even more convinced to make damn sure that the backup to my backup firesteel is next to my 4th lighter and a box of stormproof matches.

I like how you explain things as you go. A lot of differnt channels dont speak. Its agro.
When I go for a walk in the woods I usually don't carry an axe and a bow saw. how about 1 were somebody's really lost in the woods without any tools
In the winter, I always carry what I had here. You don't get far, but fire is a must.
That's called unprepared, and you have no business doing that, especially in winter.
Loggers and firefighters get lost to and need to survive the night. They have tools
Well, without ANY tools you don't belong in the woods. I carry at least a knife, firestarter, 1st aid, cordage and something to boil water in, even on dayhikes... (in fact I carry more, but this is the most basic for any outing) Not only for me, sometimes you happen to stumble across an accident etc. Outdoorrule No.1: Be responsible, expect mishaps and anticipate...
Thank you for demonstrating that relying on a friction fire in an emergency situation is pure idiocy. Carry two bic lighters, a ferro rod and a 30 dollar SAK with a saw. Fire done in 5 minutes, 2 if you're fast.
But knowing how to start a friction fire is good knowledge just in case
How is that Idiotic? Lmao. If your lost in the woods without a lighter you have to find a way to make a fire lol
“Waterish”, my only complaint. Snow is amazing
For water, and that should never be underestimated. But gods you do great showing fella how to make it if need be. Well done.

Full Stop! That fire building is a challenge! I appreciate showing it in detail! It really shows how hard it is!
Great stuff guys with many really useful tips. I always like to complete the ends as well as the back of the shelter to retain heat and block the wind.
I learned to put my ridgepole on the back side of the supporting trees, it supposedly supports the structure better if something lands on the shelter.

I was always curious if you're going to walk into the woods, why not bring a lighter or matches instead of carrying all the extra weight and space of a pre-made bow drill?
Doesn’t look as cool lol
I think the idea is you can’t survive off of only eating snow. The snowflake is formed around a dust particle, which in the long run is only dehydrating you more. Otherwise, once the snow becomes liquid you have no issue.
I love that you showed how difficult it can be to use the bow drill. I get so discouraged. It's nice to see I'm not alone in having to start over multiple times!!
Once you get your set right, you can often bang it off...but the set changes...it gets smooth, your notch is off..etc. I like it when I get it right, and can use the same notch for 3-4 fires even. This one needs to be broken in still!
You mentioned Greg ovens have you used his trick of using a big log to hold down the drill stick instead of your arm? Looks way more effective
I haven't...I think it works pretty good, but it's also one more piece you need to get just right, so makes it a little more complicated.
I watched Brooks and Birches waxing lyrical about some beer he had that was made from "Rocky Mountain Water" the other day. My first thought was, hmm, Greg Ovens undoubtedly passes a lot of Rocky Mountain water, he obviously just does it off camera. No wonder he looks so old, if they're making commercial beer from it ;D

You actually burn more calories when eating snow since it takes your body more to break it down to water.
It actually takes a HUGE amount of energy to melt snow (80 calories per gram/mL). No problem if you have food with you but I think it would have been worth it to start a small fire just to melt snow.
You don't break down water, you only melt it. That;s where the calories go, into melting it, because body heat needs to be kept up. The body simply absorbs water in the small intestine. It's not like digestion, which takes enzymes and acids to break food down into it's component parts. Same happens for certain vitamins and minerals, which are also absorbed rather than digested.
You will still survive longer though, since the body can survive without calories a lot longer than it can survive without water. Not advisable to "eat" snow if hypothermia is a risk, otherwise it makes no difference, certainly not in a one or two day survival vid and not when hypothermia isn't a risk.
@@purpuradraco3747 lol all this long comment but he never said you break water down, he said you break the snow down to water.
