Loved the JAM as a kid in late 70s/early 80s frim Cork Ireland bought every lp and single as 16 year old got to see them @ Wembley Arena London December 1982 great memory if a great band .... "The butterfly collector" one of many classics 👍✌️😎 ......
and you're starting to look much older, and your fashion sense is second rate like your perfume - lyrics that stuck with me since the first time I heard them :D
there needs to be a Complete Jam dvd part 2 that includes all the other live and tv performances that werent on the the complete jam- or a dvd set of just the live material- there seems to be a great amount of material like this and a mountain of other great stuff people have posted- thanks to all the weller and Jam fans who post all this rare stuff!!!
The Butterfly Collector along with Liza Ridley which I think were released as b sides on singles are probably lyrically the 2 most underrated songs of all time.
I was at this gig in Paris. After some rather nasty violence at the beginning of the concert it settled into a great performance. I was standing right in the front of Paul Weller and saw the flag that got chucked onto the stage and Weller tying it to the mike stand and making a somewhat regrettably nationalistic chant but it rallied the British lads from being a bit bullied and the rest of the gig then went off reasonably calmly. I was always a little grateful for the slower songs at Jam gigs as you could take a break and light up a Benson and relax a bit. I was way too young to be in Paris but it was the early 1980s and parents didn't give a toss.
I had this on an Lp when it first came out. When this album was released on cd, "The Butterfly Collector" wasn't included for some reason. Unless I happen upon a digital version of this song, I would consider it a rare collectors edition... Thanks for posting it...
Hang on mate, I love this band as much as the next man, however most Jam songs were driven by Bruce and his innovative, creative and punchy bass lines. If you listen to the majority of Jam songs and hum along, you'll nearly be always humming Bruce's bass riffs. That guy's also a legend
Actually her name was Soo Catwoman, real name Soo Lucus. Often misspelt as Sue. She was one of the most visible icons of the early punk movement in london in the mid 70's. Her name came from the 'catwoman' haircut she wore.
I want to play for anyone who's willing and open to whatever I have to say, musically. I couldn't care less for their clothing or ethos, as a musician I am hounoured that anyone gives me 5 minutes of their time. Mister Weller was very talented. He also knew it. Not an attractive quality. And if I was a boy, in 1981..I'd have the same haircut. It's very cool.
Weller always struck me as a priviledged upper class dork. Arrogance was the least of his problems. I wouldn't be having a pint with him, in other words. But he and The Jam sure as hell made really affecting music, and, nonetheless, my haircut was just like his, back in the day.
like the jam anyway only heard this one recently learnt to play it its a great song thats the sign of a great band, even their more obscure songs are strikingly good - like EARLY oasis b sides
Any clue what the song was about? Paul said it was about a punk groupie at the time. hardly someone you'd really want to be long term, eh? Maybe Weller just wanted a woman who wouldn't mess him around, wihc is the least anyone could want Anyway, I like the line; "And I don't care about morals, 'cause the world's insane and we're all to blame anyway."
@TheBleech Not at all. My statement identifies the obvious shortcomings of that line-up in doing justice to some of Weller's compositions then. I saw the Jam three times in their early days, once on their debut tour, they were raw, visceral, but one dimensional - which is why Weller moved on, and why Foxton and Butler have been unable to do anything other than trade on long lost glory.
@spikepedestal Obviously its just opinion and there is no quetion that Buckler and Foxtom were an integral part of the Jam sound. But I think that Weller realised that the format limited him and musically neither of his bandmates have done anything of note in theor own right.
Not sure what all the grief is about? I love the Jam for being the Jam. They were a punk /turned Mod Revival band. Weller's lyrics were current, clever and gritty. Bruce and Rick complemented perfectly. There's a lot of latter day breakdown analysis that is simply wrong. It's also unnecessary because there's no changing what the band were or did. Theorising is great but being in it was better.
@garylongden. I SO disagree with you. I really don't believe Weller has ever been the same since the Jam. Buckler and Foxton have it over any of the bloody journeymen he has used since. EG check out any live version of Town Called Malice by the Jam then a solo version with say Minchella and White on bass and drums and you might get an idea what I mean.....on record, Bruce in particular, make any of Weller's songs swing....check out Dreamtime or When You're Young.
there is only 1 god! His name is Weller! Id start a new religion dedicated to him but he would kick my ass cuz he is a simple man! God bow down to the true messiah!
Celluloid proof of why he needed to split the Jam. The more recent solo acoustic versions of this are so superior, bruce Foxton only has one gear, doesnt he?
P.S., Has anyone else noticed the absolutely sexist lyrics to this song? "you can't light a fire, you can't cook or sew." Give me a break. All Paul wanted was a nice little woman who'd stay home and cook all his meals. Sheesh.
@DaMnMeSsEdUpKeYbOaRd yeah a mate of mine met him before a gig a few years ago and said how nice he was. i can imagine if you act like a twat he might have it, but so what? he's a musician not a fucking celebrity blesss you weller
Oasis tried to be like the Jam and failed miserably, they had two good albums and the rest is crap, the Jam ruled the charts when you needed to sell a million singles to get to no 1. Oasis = Jam imitations
Loved the JAM as a kid in late 70s/early 80s frim Cork Ireland bought every lp and single as 16 year old got to see them @ Wembley Arena London December 1982 great memory if a great band .... "The butterfly collector" one of many classics 👍✌️😎 ......
The greatest group ever ❤️
Best front man,bar none.thanks Paul for the concerts of my youth,Thanks The Jam.
The best band ever 😊😊😊
Superb - agree this is a classic song!
never confuse te art with the artist, to be honest i couldn't give two fucks what he's like, his music is incredible.
and you're starting to look much older, and your fashion sense is second rate like your perfume - lyrics that stuck with me since the first time I heard them :D

was my inspiration at 17 and still are at 50 enough said!!!!!
Headfookin blowing, all these year's later... Weller's voice make's my spine tingle :)
Brilliant song 🎵 listen to it everyday awesome 👌 👏 👍

Great talent coupled with pure passion - magic
the greatest band for honesty in there lyrics ever
The Jam........forever!
learning a jam song to play at my friends bday party on saturday
thanks for some great tunes weller, you're one of the greats mate
I had this on an Lp when it first came out. When this album was released on cd, "The Butterfly Collector" wasn't included for some reason. Unless I happen upon a digital version of this song, I would consider it a rare collectors edition...

good tune and lyrics

I love the jam, but it was weller, Rick and Bruce did bring things to the table but not a great thing
I agree!
Had this on a yellow promo 45 rpm decades ago.
LITTLE BOY SOLDIERS!!! Best Jam song..
Ex mod/ punk nee1962.
And when you can't make your point with facts..it's always good to regurgitate names.
Very good. Maybe I should stick to commenting about the mix.
THE power trio...
LITTLE BOY SOLDIERS!!!

B sides are sometimes the best.

I feel like the little kid watching everyone cheer the emperor parading through the streets
without clothes and thinking "this guy can't sing on key".
like the jam anyway only heard this one recently learnt to play it
its a great song thats the sign of a great band, even their more obscure songs are strikingly good - like EARLY oasis b sides
To me Paul Weller is as good a songrwriter as PeteTownsend or Ray Davies. Saw them at Barbarella's in Brum in 1977, great memories
Someone nudged Bruce Foxton's mic volume...?
It's buckler and he's the brilliant drummer
@DaMnMeSsEdUpKeYbOaRd thrilled to hear it! It sucks when your heroes turn out to be dicks. Glad to hear he isn't. Wow 12 thumbs up! Nice to see.
@garylongden intresting that the two best tracks on Weller's new album have Foxton back on bass to give them a kick up the ass
who is the other guy on the right? what's his name?
mint
Any clue what the song was about? Paul said it was about a punk groupie at the time. hardly someone you'd really want to be long term, eh?
Maybe Weller just wanted a woman who wouldn't mess him around, wihc is the least anyone could want
Anyway, I like the line;

@garylongden The Jam were, Wellar, Foxton, Butler. At that time, your statement would have meant FUCK ALL.
Foxton's mic is too loud
@garylongden. I SO disagree with you. I really don't believe Weller has ever been the same since the Jam. Buckler and Foxton have it over any of the bloody journeymen he has used since. So, how low does that make the musician who avails him/herself of the groupie's services?
Great song, though.
Actually, Foxton's mic was perfect, IMO.
Noel?
@ashingtoon Noel undoubtedly stuck with oasis for too long, i have high hopes for his musical contributions post-oasis.
@ashingtoon too true dude,paul never needed NO L then :D
@TheBleech who,s butler
there is only 1 god! His name is Weller! Id start a new religion dedicated to him but he would kick my ass cuz he is a simple man! God bow down to the true messiah!
Weller always struck me as a bloke from a crappy working class area, dunno about you
Fuckin amazon,werent they?Decent backin fae Foxton oan this!
Spare us the cheesy Scottishness,you`re just advertising your own inferiority complex.
@ShAdOw116789

little boy soldiers is BETTER than Imagine by Lennon-well close-but ignored anyway.

Sue Catwoman, a famous Sex Pistols groupie.

@DaMnMeSsEdUpKeYbOaRd
