    I have one of these. You need to be careful with the angle gauge as lifting the stone arm above parallel like when you were zeroing it with the level can actually knock the needle from the back where it is attached. It can also be bent from shipping so I would recommend getting either a digital angle cube or one of those angle finding phone apps just to check it. I would say it is essential if you want to professionally sharpen knives for others.
    With the way you were spraying water over the clamp and everything behind it there is a good risk of rust since the water will travel down the spinning rod and into the mechanism where it is not easy to get oil.
    Also be careful with the nut on the bar on the front, mine was loose from the factory and it allowed the bar to spin and get off angle so be sure it is tightened and the bar is level.

      any one professionally sharpening knives will be using a motorized setup like a work sharp or some other modified version of a belt sander, not something like this. there are few people out there that are willing to wait more than 10-15 minutes or pay more than $10-15 to have a knife sharpened in my experience and while these systems are incredible and do give you a MUCH better edge, they simply take too long to be used in an actual professional/commercial setting. its kinda sad that the world has become so impatient and willing to sacrifice quality for time these days but still true.

      Smokey, I am in the process of opening a professional knife and tool sharpening business. My plan is to offer sharpening on a system similar to this as a premium service, for those willing to pick up the next day and pay a bit more. Having said that, freehand sharpening with a belt grinder can give you an edge much sharper that what you see in this video in a lot less time. The tradeoff is in they precision of the angle on the bevel- less consistent when freehanding, but that's not essential in a lot of applications.

      @ Chad Lewis: yeah im personally not a fan of motorized sharpening systems of any type (espescially chainsaw chain sharpeners) because of the risk of too much friction overheating a blade and ruining the blade's temper/hardness, but i know things like the worksharp can be turned down to a lower RPM to avoid that. i've heard great things about the convex edge a belt grinder can provide, the problem with that is that you HAVE to either use a belt grinder every time you sharpen (which wont work well in the field) or re-profile the edge which takes quite a bit of time, but i guess a lot of people dont use their knives as much as i do and can go a lot longer without needing a touch up.
      I personally use a Lansky diamond system with Arkansas stones and a strop for finishing, every blade i own is sharp enough to shave with and has a mirror edge. most of my friends come to me to have their knives sharpened and repaired. the only really big drawback to that system is its pretty limited on blade length unless you reclamp longer blades which can throw your edge off and give two separate bevels if you arent careful. I'm seriously considering upgrading to this system when i can afford to, but it has one big drawback of its own that no one seems to mention... blade thickness. most of the blades i have that are over 6 inches are outdoor knives made for hunting, bushcrafting, combat, and all around heavy use, and most of them have 1/4" (6.5mm) thick blades. this system can only do a 5mm thick blade with the single clamp which is intended for use with shorter blades. the clamps for longer blades can only accept a blade 3.5mm thick which is completely backward and makes no sense to me at all. i think the system could be easily modified using spacers between the springs and the attachment point to make it accept thicker blades, but it does seem a lil short-sighted to me that this problem obviously was never considered, and despite the fact that i've talked to several people who claim they've asked for the same modifications and compatibility changes, the creator of the system still hasnt done anything about it.

    • @chadlewis3515
      @chadlewis3515 7 лет назад

      @Smokey420Greenleaf: Some really good points there. Motorized systems can be tough until you practice enough to use them properly. I have a Worksharp 3000 I use to set bevel angles on woodworking plane and chisel blades. It's fairly low speed, but even then it'll burn the blade if you're not careful. And of course any knife that wasn't made in a big factory was made in the maker's shop using a belt grinder, including final finishing after heat treating. All those hundreds (even thousands?) of knife makers are able to use a grinder without ruining the blade. And you don't have to do a convex grind on a belt grinder, although it's probably the most common. Concave and hollow grinds are done using the contact wheel, and flat grinds are done on the platen. With a sharpening business motorized systems are almost a necessity to turn around product fast enough for the business to be profitable, assuming you're running a business and not doing some stuff on the side for a few bucks. I'd love to get out the water stones and sharpen every job that way, but not a lot of folks will pay you what it costs in time to do that. A few will, and that's why I'll offer it but I don't think there'll be a lot of customers for it.
      I have a Lansky system I bought a long time ago and don't like it much. Like you said, blade length is really limited, and the whole system is pretty cheesy. However, it will put a nice edge on a blade if you're willing to put up with it. I'd like a better system than the Lansky for doing what I call "fixed angle" sharpening. I might just end up building my own based on the KO2. I think a fixed angle system is necessary for certain custom knives, where the bevel and how it's set is built into the aesthetic of the knife. Freehand on stones or a power system would ruin the look of such a knife, in my opinion.

      Mine too...box was busted but sharpener was intact. Only issue I found is that the adhesive on back of stones does not seem to hold up well. I am using simple green as my wetting solution for stones and after sharpening 3 or 4 knives, all the stones have fallen off the aluminum backing plate. Any ideas on a better adhesive to keep stones on the plates?

    This may be a stupid question but my KO2 kit (Wranglerstar) arrived but the angle needle is loose. Is there a trick to resetting it bc I have no clue what angle its at. I did set the set up sharpener on flat surface, then put a level on the arm about where the stone attaches. With help we leveled the arm and then set the angle needle at zero. I then spun the angle adjustment til it stopped and it only went to about 25degrees, even though the indicator goes to 40 degrees. Any help is greatly appreciated

      +The Beaten Paths fair question. The build on the TSProf is more robust - almost industrial. I really predict it to last for quite a long time. The speed of sharpening is better here due to the flipping mechanism. The clamp system is expandable and very precise. The edge pro could certainly do for most.

    why such a fine edge on a pocket knife? 15-17 degrees is more for straight razors and sushi knives... 20 is more for kitchen knives, and 25-30 is what you would generally want on a pocket knife. a 17 degree edge on a pocket knife is simply too fragile to tackle most tasks you would use a pocket knife on, and will either dull or chip much faster.

    • @bloodgain
      @bloodgain 7 лет назад +1

      JA Henckels now sharpens their Western style kitchen knives to 15 degrees and their Eastern/Japanese style knives to 10 degrees, according to one of their reps. The reason was that advancements in their steel and hardening process supported the steeper angles and higher performance.
      Point being, traditionally, you're right, but modern high-end knives are more flexible in this regard. It's mostly the steels, but also more commitment to good hardening and tempering in consumer-grade knives. At this point, it depends a lot on the particular knife and what you plan to use it for. If you're batoning wood, you should probably go higher. If you're just slicing tape or other odd EDC tasks or skinning game, you might like something a little more razor-like. But if it's just a 440 steel, stick with higher angles; I always used ~22 1/2 degrees, which is easy to eyeball (half 90 then half again) and was widely recommended by knife and sharpener manufacturers.

    • @Smokey420Greenleaf
      @Smokey420Greenleaf 7 лет назад +2

      yeah i use a 30 degree angle on most of my edc folders and can still shave with every single one of them, but i tend to cut a lot of plastic, rope, cardboard, and paper on a daily basis you do have a good point though. thank you man :-)

    • @b-radg916
      @b-radg916 6 лет назад

      I agree with bloodgain… how you sharpen a knife depends on the intended use. My German kitchen knife is somewhere around 15 degrees (I don't measure), and my various Japanese knives are anywhere between 8 and 15 degrees. But, if I'm sharpening for a friend or family member, I will increase the angle depending on my belief in how hard they will be on the knife.

      Saw another vid on the TSPROF, an 'Unboxing'. The ropes were on the outside of the box. I figured it was shipped that way... 🤷‍♂️

      Ducati Dude I ordered the new K03 and I’ve been checking the tracking. It finally left Russia and made it through US customs. Can’t wait to get it !! Just bustin’ your balls regarding the rope handles.

    Anything below a Rockwell hardness of 62 I would put an edge of 22 degrees.

    Mhe... that's not a razor sharp nor,obviously, a mirror edge.
    I can archieve better results going free hand on waterstones.
    that being said, the system itself looks intresting.... but u need to use a very lager variety of stones .. and leather...

    Yeah, Russia via China, that is. Looks pretty much like an overpriced KME sharpener. Now if it could do two sides of the blade at once, it would be a good alternative to the Wicked Edge.

      I'd be very very surprised if that were the case. Don't know how he could do each one by hand and sell it for the price he does, including shipping. He probably SHOULD outsource to China. That way he could leverage a marketing program for it.

    Wonder what the liberals have to say about your really awesome knife sharpening system from Russia. My take on Russian made stuff is that it is very innovative, practical, well made, and durable as I buy a lot of oil field equipment from there.

      Unnecessary comment. I don't understand how politics comes into this at all to be honest. You don't need to be conservative to know this is a good system.

    You can buy an exact copy of a KME from China for $20...tack on another $15 for a full set of diamond stones. Lol

    Be careful if you intend to sharpen other people's knives! You appear to have marred the handle scales. Easily done with a "bull in a china shop" approach.
