    Hi Shraddha,
    I am an old german man and I love to watch your Channel because you´re acting natural and your view of the details in this culture makes sense and is interesting.
    Here are some comments from my perspective:
    To the approach in german Language: I would never ever start a coversation to another person in english here in Germany (unless I hear that they are foreign), because it is regarded as unpolite. We have a lot of people with Immigrant background here. A lot of them are born here, but have certainly not a typical "german look". So if I start a conversation to those people in english, it could be an offense when they are born or living for long time here. I would show them that they are not from here and this is a discrimination. In the end it is a question of politeness and respect to start in german.
    To the loud nose blowing: You are right: it is annoying - and even for germans. It can happen to everyone, if it comes all of the sudden. But even then it´s very embarrassing and seen as disrespectful.
    To the love of paperwork: Nobody loves it, not even germans. But they do it anyway. In the comment to your last video I tried to explain why they do it and have to do it.
    Go on with your lovely videos!!!!
    Dettmar

    Regarding expecting people to speak German - well, folks with non-German looks who speak German or grew up in German feel marginalised and not included if you adress them in English and do not expect them to speak German. It is actually a gesture of inclusion to adress whomever in German, an invitation.

    Hey Shraddha, Nice effort you made i would say.
    However, one correction is that, Most of the Germans know English but they sometime hesitate to talk in English or else they just like to talk in their own language as they feel that feelings can be perfectly expressed in `Muttersprache´.

    • @ShraddhaParashar

  • @dr.penpen

    To clear things up about the German/english speaking thing. There are a lot of foreigners who settled in germany, and they and their children speak german, often being citizens. Talking to them in english first is considerd rude(and racist), because you would basicly tell them that they dont belong here. In India, you might could tell who is a foreigner on first sight, because there are very few who life there and speak hindi so you use english. But just because someone looks asian/african/arabic/indian it dosent automaticly mean they aren not german. So in germany you would always start in german, and then switch to english, because, how should i know if you are born in berlin or in deli, on first sight.
    I laughed so hard on the last one, Id never thougt that anyone anywhere would be ever so disgusted from blowing your nose.
    stay awesome

    How is it weird to assume a person wanting to live here speaks the language of the country? I'm german myself and I did live abroad. I did lern the language. Why would you not ?

    • @ShraddhaParashar
      @ShraddhaParashar  4 года назад +5

      It is weird as an Indian as we have mother language as Hindi but still we speak in English first with foreigners. We never start in our mother tongue language and we do not expect foreigners to learn our languages if they want to live. So as an Indian it is strange that when a German start conversation they always start in German. That was my point.

      @@ShraddhaParashar Well I get that, we don't have a multitude of languages though and for the children of migrants who were born and raised in Germany it would probably be massively offensive if the other person assumed they didn't speak German just because of the way they look, so you just address anyone in German. It's gonna be the same in about every other European country. If you're in Berlin it's a different thing, because more and more people there speak English anyway.

    • @ShraddhaParashar
      @ShraddhaParashar  4 года назад +2

      @@kevse2521 Yeah you are right! It is actually same in every country but India is exception. We always start with English :P Don't know why but yeah living in Germany has made me realise to respect the mother tongue and love for the language. I am sorry if I offended you in any way :)

      @@ShraddhaParashar Oh no you did not offend me at all. Was just curious. The way I see it its fine to not speak french and go on a vacation to Paris, but if I intended on living in France for a prolonged period of time, lets say 10 years, I think not only is it best to lern french but it's also necessary if I want to integrate into french society and become a part of the local community. Also on a different note, some things you say are always lost in translation, so to really understand a people I personally believe you'll have to know their language.

    For the language point, in India we always consider a foreigner to be a guest, always like a tourist or someone here temporarily. Thus, we try to make the guest feel at home by trying to speak the language they are familiar with. But, I understand that germans don't do this. They don't don't consider that you might be temporary, they think you are here to stay or you have been here. That's cute.
    That being said, it's important to learn the language if you are planning to spend atleast 2-3 years in a country with a different language.
    In india I live in a state which is not my origin. Though I was born here and know the language and culture, people don't start the conversation with me in their language. It facilitates communication, but it makes me feel like an outsider sometimes!

    Concerning the body and bodily funcions: if it's natural then you do not have to be shy or ashamed of... it's natural!
    Practicality over everything else!! This explains why there are so many rules & laws. As a guideline: If something is worth doing, it's worth to be done the right way! Much thought effort was put into finding the right (practical) way so everything makes sense (except when traditions are involved). Being orderly, punctual and bureacratic derived from this guideline.
    Hope this explains the basic mindset. :)

    • @Aldo_Regozzani

      Additionally: Being blunt, direct, truthful and literal also can be derived from the above. And as always: Rule 55: No rule without exception!

    I would definitely recommend you to look for other businesses to interact with. You can definitely get your car washed without an appointment. Same holds for a haircut, while this is indeed much easier for men than for women. And many shops will definitely try to provide you with alternatives or order missing items. However, if you choose the discounters, limited service is part of their concept which allows for low prices.

    I dunno which was my favorite here. But, I was definitely shocked after listening to the 10th one. I have always heard people saying that Germans usually don't entertain any sort of noise. Like even if one is slurping tea, that noise would annoy them. Then how come in the middle of a lecture they are sneezing loudly. That's really strange and weird. Also ironic after knowing all other ethics of Germans.
    Anyways a good video. Thanks for sharing. :)

      Its because sneezing is a noise, which its bad and unhealthy, if you have to repress it. We have "horror stories" passed down from each generation of kids to the next, that if you snooz with your nose shut down, your eyes will plop out 🤣
      And if you have to blow your nose, is there even a way, to do it silent? 🤔😅

  • @furzkram
    @furzkram 3 года назад +2

    It's simple - you're in Germany here.
    However, only the older generation lacks knowledge of the English language. The younger generation usually speaks English.
    Older people from the eastern parts, formerly the German democratic Republic (DDR) had to learn Russian instead of English.
    There's many English speaking expats who want to train their German who complain that Germans quickly switch to English, to do them a favour when they realize their German isn't too well - which annoys those who would like to stick to German so they could practise their German.

  • @mandyt7010

    The video was quite informative…i think one important aspect which you might add is that they are very particular about time. They respect their own time as well as yours. Work related meetings always start on time. They ensure that in case they are not able to attend they decline and inform you in advance. Same is the case with work life balance. They dnt expect you to work after office hours nor do they work. You will never ever get a phone call frm a german colleague after office hours or on a holiday. You can have a seperate video on work culture in case you havent made one.

    Hi Shradda, you sound genuinely puzzled about the fact that "Germans expect someone in Germany speaking German with them". Almost like "how dare they, expecting someone they meet in their home country to use the native language". I know that many, if not most, Germans (at least the younger generations) will be able and willing to talk to strangers in english. Many of my non german friends even complain about the fact that Germans love to train their english on them, even if the try to speak in german. Nevertheless, I would find it very rude from someone to expect me to not even try to start a conversation in german. When traveling other countries I would never take it for granted that the people I'm visiting have to adapt to my preferences. And I don't think thats part of the german culture. The native laguage(s) of every culture is/are integral parts of that culture and people all over the world should have the right to expect someone to respect their culture in their own country.

    One reason why Germans liston often to english music is because after WWII it was very fashionable to listen to the englisch and american Music. German music was rated as backward and the music of the old Nazis. Who was young and listened to Bill Haley was "cool" and who listened to German Music was seen as an old fashion or even Nazi guy.
    And the next decades till today english music was always rated as modern. But after 2000 there are more and more bands that making german music but most of the singers have no nice voice… ;-)

      You‘re really wondering why an Indian might find that odd? Just remember how many different languages India has (different as the difference between German and Turkish or Hungarian). Most likely it’s normal for Shraddha to switch between languages, without giving it much thought. And when in doubt, she will switch to English.
      And publicly blowing your nose is actually considered rude in many parts of the world. You are obviously sick, and need to be avoided. It’s just some europeans who don’t mind.
