I like having practice runs! They encourage you to play harder levels that otherwise would be skiped, which makes things more interesting! However, ideally skips are a more valuable resource that you'd rather conserve for when you really need them, and practice runs are more readily available but can't be used willy nilly either. As is, skips are more readily available than practice runs (with giving up lives or getting 3 coins you can get more skips, but practice runs are finite), and if your priority is safety and continuing the run for a better chance at finding easy/free levels then skips straight up better (which isn't a bad thing, unless you have more skips than practice runs). I think making practice runs more available than skips would make these runs even more interesting, you'd be encouraged to try to practice levels to save skips for later levels, even if you'd rather just skip it.
