- I had a couple of free days and the weather conditions looked favourable so I decided to take a trip to the stunning Lake District for a quick overnighter and to scout out a possible location to photograph a very intriguing species. The Raven has always fascinated me from being a boy and when walking in the Lakes have always marvelled at their grace and acrobatic prowess. Join me as I pack up the big Shimoda and head into the mountains.

Simply stunning Simon 👌what a pleasure to watch magnificent views 👍keep these coming 👏👏👏
Thanks for watching Paul
Simon Eardley = Perserverance. Good job.
On the technical side, did you use positive exposure comp or (if full manual) overexposure and how much to get the birds right against the lighter backgrounds? In my experience, ravens, crows, magpies, blackbirds etc. are tricky to get right.
PS did it occur to you the circling birds were waiting on fresh “carrion?”
They were probably eyeing me up Brian!!😆 Regarding the exposure I only over exposed a couple of times , either +.7 or 1 stop when the bird were against the sky. Managed to pick up most detail in Lightroom.
Always worry about all the camouflage if on the fells, hows does mountain rescue find you. Oh yeah, I always take a whistle around my neck. Andi
I know what you mean Andi, a couple of flashing head torches should do the job.👍🏼
Fantastic video Simon,I really appreciate the hard work and effort you put in to get to these high places ⛺️⛺️
Cheers Alan, great place to film 🎥
Great stuff Simon, fantastic trip. just spending time up in that environment in the elements is amazing and time with those beautiful birds. Some great footage. Sparrow hawk was a bonus. Remember the first time I heard the Ravens on a zero visibility mountain top in the cloud. very eerie and atmospheric. love em. Might be worth taking a small carcass up there ( Maybe not a sheep carcass lol, the pack was big enough as is lol) . Brilliant film
Rick n Billydog
Cheers Rick, it was your bivvy film that prompted me to get up there. Its a great spot, steep ascent like!! Definitely the way forward with the carcass, i'd get some looks dragging a roadkill deer up there mate !!👀😆 thanks for watching. ATB , Si
great vid Simon. have you tried 'Summit to eat' dried meals, the tikka meal is pretty tasty and they do two sizes which is handy. also, how much did that bag weigh? don't think i would make it up the stairs, let alone those hills, which are beautiful. need to get back there, haven't been for 15 years.
Not tried them Steve, theyre a great idea but theyre expensive for what they are. The bag was about 35kg from what i recall, heavier now i've gone back to Nikon!!
Hello Simor you bag holds quite a lot? May I ask you how is the weight? Cheers.
Hi Luigi, I weighed it a 28kg before this trip. Its heavy but extremely comfortable 👍
These are the best kind of adventures. Something about being miserable that is very enjoyable. lol. Great vlog, Simon.
Cheers Kevin, makes you feel alive up there mate👍🏼
Great stuff, very enjoyable to watch. Did you use any minus compensation ?
Another cracking video thank you Simon. Really put me in the mood for my trip up there next week.
Can you remind me where you got your beanie hat from. If my memory serves I seem to recall they're made by a lady up there in Cumbria.
Cheers Gary, theyre called Buffy hats. Each one is hand made and all different. You can get them through www.benandloisorford.com
Click on STORE and then Buffy hats. They sell out quick!!
@@simoneardley Thanks Simon
Great video as always Simon! Very interesting and inspiring! The OM1 is ideal for people who walks long distances in nature! I bring my in my climbing adventures in South America and Europe! Sometimes with long walks, like 35+Km a Day (Forests and Mountains) under Sun or Rain! The right tool for the pretended adventure!
Absolutely Magnificent area. Beautiful. I love the Ravens and the Crows. I feed the Crows here in NW Florida. They love raw peanuts in the shell. Thanks Simon.
That is real photography, not set up. Glad you are getting on with the OM1 as that is my kit, I have been with Olympus for years and love that I can take them anywhere because of the weather proofing.Keep up the good work, I love your videos and your easy going manner. I have Ravens over the house but never thought to photograph them, silly me as I love their kronking.
Thanks Mel, thats the big winner for me , the weight. Theres no way I could have dragged a big 600 up there without a sherpa!!👍🏼
Great video Simon, if I can go once to UK again, I'd like to have a hike or photo hunt with you! I believe B-Roll in the mountains is a mess, but you still laugh a lot. Thank you for taking us along. Cheers from Germany
Top work Si, great to have you back out on a wild camp too. I loved that first shot of the Raven in flight coming toward the camera at the end.
Really liked that bag too, I'm on the lookout for a new back pack so might look into them. Thanks pal 👍
Cheers Ant, thanks for watching mate. Great place for a camp and not too far from the car park when youre lugging some gear. The Shimoda X70 is a serious bag and big money but more of a specialist photography bag.
👍👍❤❤👌👌
Just found the channel Simon ,great channel it is too, inspiring, thanks m8,Belfast
Thanks Earl and welcome along mate 👊🏼📸
Always inspiring, interesting and educational
Wow… I was up on Red Screes on the first freezing snowy frosty day a week ago and had a close up and personal encounter with a raven. It was no more than 2/3 metres away from me and bobbed about pecking and perching and flitting from rock to rock. I had my Oly 12-100 and got real close shots. It knew I was there and wasn’t bothered. Fantastic!
Fantastic Ian, yeh ive found that. Theyre a lot more confident when the weather is a bit bad and theyre struggling for food. I'll be back up there this Winter!! ATB, Si
Watching that opening sequence thinking…”he’s gonna have to negotiate this then come back for the B roll camera”…once seemed hard enough and then the slip. Sorry mate but I had a chuckle, we’ve all been there 😂
Oh I had a chuckle myself when I watched it back!!😆👀🎥
I was up there today but not as high as snow and ice, it was bloody baltic, took some landscape shots but even though filmed in colour they look B&W, took shots of highland coos, and after 30 mins had to shelter as hands were numb.
Its a top spot Andi but its tough once them digits start to freeze!!🥶🥶
Nice photos, where in the world is this mountain range? Beautiful scenery
Thanks Hector, this was Red Screes area in the Lake District. North West England.
Great little adventure Simon , you missed the Fig Rolls in the essential item😂
Haha, no room for figs on this one Laurence 🤣
Simon,
Your real and share great insight on your camera gear as long with your other gear .
Cheers Basil, glad you enjoyed it mate👍🏼
really nice to watch, learn & amazing photos!!
Many thanks Louise 👍🏼📷
I use mountain house meals also. My favorite is the chicken and potatoes
Cheers John, I'll take a look 👀👍🏼
Hi Simon, been a little while. Enjoyed this, but it is now straying into areas that we will not physically choose to follow, so best wishes if this is where you want to progress. Best to al, J&A&B&T
some good sound advise and tips nice one
Thanks for watching Michael👍🏼👀
Sound video and some nice pics👍
Thanks Mark
Morning Simon mate hope all is well and okay hopefully you had a decent birthday mate, brilliant video as all ways it looked rather cool up thar take care of yourself stay safe mate
Not into watching strictly. So it's prime time TV again, with Simon Eardley 👍. Love the gadgets, also about taking all your litter with you, top guy👍 And it's like you said, it's great just to be out. Cheers Simon 👍
Aye, love getting up in the hills Michael. No better place to be 👍🏼👊🏼
Nice to see you back, welcome to my county .. didnt need to be told where you were, Recognised The Kirkstone Inn within first minute, think Id of been camping bit closer to pub. Didnt realise we had ravens around there, done landscapes there. Great advice about safety telling folk to learn to use maps and compass. Git thee sell t'yon pub marra, thoos earned it, cummerlan sausage, egg an t'chips
Haha, it'd have been better than those dehydrated meals mate!! Its a lovely spot up there for sure.👍🏼👌🏼
Fantastic. Thank you. Absolutely stunning landscape. Appreciate the effort it took to make this film. Been looking at the shimoda bags, trying to decide which size between the 50 and 70, I will be going for the 70 after seeing this. Thanks again. All the best. 👍📷😎
Totally agree the 70 gives you massive options and if you don't need the extra space just roll up the top part👍
Brilliant Vlog again Simon , I suppose its Better falling at the bottom than at the top. crackin viewing
Cheers Chris, it probably gave a few people a laugh 🤣🤣 It doesn't always go to plan!!
Thanks for the video Simon really enjoyed it and thanks for the Bean Bag it came on Thursday.
Nice one Paul, thanks for watching the film and supporting the shop👍
I commented on your last vlog that link to Etsy shop is not working. It’s still not working so you will be losing Christmas ordered mate!
Thanks Jim, sorted now mate. Cheers for the headsup!!👍🏼
Size of that pack I thought there was a cow carcass in it 😀 amazing bag but as you said the essentials ! great photos you did get but its a long time since I enjoyed solitude and peace like that thanks a mil for bringing us along !
Youre welcome Pat, its surprising what you need just for a night out.😆
Great video as always, love ravens too, always give themselves away with their croaking calls. I have some local to me, 10 minutes up the road 😊
Good stuff Michael, I'm looking forward to getting some proper pics of them soon. Cracking looking birds.
Brilliant Simon,I always find it's the been out there in the natural environment and experiencing and absorbing it all in.In welsh the raven is called cigfran which translates to meat crow.Loved the stills worth every bit of effort 👌 well done simon.
Thanks Aneurin, ive unfinished business with those Ravens. it was a good little scouting trip though👍🏼
what a landscape, love your trip. The shimoda backpack is amazing to store all of your trekking + photo gears, amazing. Is there any built-in frame under that backpack ? thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, the Shimoda has a very discreet aluminium tubular frame to give the bag some form but the main stiffness comes from the various sized inserts.
Home from home for me Martin up in the mountains and the wilderness !!! Loved it as always mate and a very enjoyable watch 👌👍
Thanks Paul, makes you feel alive mate thats for sure 👍🏼👊🏼
Really great video as always. Keep em coming mucka 👍
Will do Gary, thanks for watching 👍🏼
Another nice outing, Simon. Thanks for taking me along.
Thanks, you're welcome Clifton 👍
Belle aventure et belles photos, Merci.
This is some quality stuff!! Thanks Simon 👍🏼
Glad you think so!
Great video! Cheers!
Thanks for the visit
What make is that shirt Simon?
The fleece hoodie and the base layer are both Jack Pyke available from Military 1st.
It seems so odd you putting so much effort into Ravens when they fly over our house daily. But that’s the interesting thing about birding full stop, one man’s weekly tick is another one’s year tick.
It's all about the journey 👍
Great video Simon, really like the overnight videos & plan to do a few myself over the next few weeks.
I’m surprised there wasn’t much going on in & around that lake to be honest as all wildlife needs the water?
Keep em coming.
Mark🇬🇧
Cheers Mark, yeh the overnighters add another dynamic. Scandale Tarn is only a small body of water to be honest. Thanks for watching 👍🏼👀
