I saw this one in the theatre when it came out. When Zilla finally made its appearance my first thought was, "So when will the REAL Godzilla show up and kill this thing?" Final Wars was too little, too late.
Whilst I'd argue that 'Godzilla vs. Biollante', 'Mothra vs. Godzilla', and especially 'Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack' are excellent films in the series, I do agree with all else you've put across here.
@4:05 I should point out that this Godzilla "was not designed by nature", but the result of more than one reptile mutated by the atomic testing by the French.
Fan fact: This movie is canon to the Toho franchise. They renamed the monster to Zilla and had the REAL Godzilla one shot it in 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars in which an alien leader sent it against him. P.S. In Godzilla 2000, two Japanese soldiers were having a conversation about the attack on New York and one of them asked if Godzilla was behind it and the other told him that that was what all the American experts claimed but their guys had doubts.
You have a point. Using the Godzilla name was a box office draw. The catch is making a film that doesn't live up to the name is going to earn many harsh reviews. You can kill an American Kaiju with a couple of anti-ship missiles but a Japanese Kaiju, no way.
Actually, the climax with the baby godzillas reminded me more of Gremlins than Jurassic Park, what with dozens of the reptiles rampaging among the concession stands.
'Zilla' is a mutated iguana. Iguanas nest in burrows. Not hard to believe at all. Also, the babies are more like T-Rexes than raptors. I rather liked the way this movie tried to put a scientific edge on things. Try watching it for itself and not as a Godzilla movie and it's quite fun. More of a homage than a contribution of the genre.
I accidentally stumbled onto that set when I was living in NY and walked out the back door of Brooks Brothers only to find absolute carnage. I started backing up trying to get back into the building when I saw the cranes and the cameras.
As an American myself I always found this to be out of place. In the Japanese films Godzilla could kind of be interpreted as a metaphor not only for Nukes, but also for Japans evolving view of the USA. Evolving from a monster who scourged their cities to a powerful potential ally/lesser of two evils.
I love this movie purely because the monster looks so damn cool. I never found Godzilla's original design to be very aesthetically pleasing, but Zilla's design is WAY cool. The cartoon follow-up was awesome too.
I have a couple of take-aways from "Zilla". The first is its soundtrack. Prior to it coming out, promo videos for Jamiroquai's _Deeper Underground_ and Puff Daddy feat. Jimmy Page with _Come With Me_ were shown on MTV. I know it may sound like sacrilege to butcher Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, but I actually liked it and went out and bought the CD, even before the film came out and looked forward to seeing Godzilla stomping around New York to Page's riffs and Diddy's beats when the film came out. However, the songs on the soundtrack were reduced to snippets being played on the radio in the background. _Come With Me_ played in a scene in which the female lead messed around with a id card. (It's funny, but on seeing it on DVD Come with me played over the end credits, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case in the original theatrical release. I could be wrong)
I loved the 1998 movie. I loved the design, the fact it wasn't indestructible, and a whole lot of fun. It came at a time, too, when my love of the kaiju was really high. Also, when you add up all of the time Godzilla spends in any of those movies, it's surprisingly low. Only a few can say he's featured prominently. Even adding up the screen time of the kaiju is DAM is very minute. Most of the kaiju only show up for a few seconds.
tbh I liked the French guy. Brodrick got away with murder so he's right to have that hunted look in his eyes every film he's in. What I didn't like was that song at end.
It's so weird how people just forget that Matthew Broderick killed / maimed a bunch of people in Ireland with his reckless driving. They'll talk about Ferris Bueller and always mention that the guy that played the principal turned out to be a pedophile, but never what Broderick did.
I had always heard about how great Godzilla movies were, so when this film came out I went to see it. I loved Independence Day, so I thought - if I'm ever going to like Godzilla, this will be a great place to start. I left the theatre thinking, "People love these movies? Really? I seriously don't get it". Glad to know this is representative.
Come on man that flying/gliding tail kick to the chest is one of the greatest tag team moves in wrestling history....uhh giant lizard/giant robot tag team moves anyways.
Fun fact: Actaully it was Americans that changed the look once the rights were available. In fact the appearance almost led to the movie not being made. ToHo had to approve and it took a lot a lot of revisions to finally get the okay. To this day ToHo and Japan don't recognize this creature as Godzilla and have used it in a film calling him simply Zilla.
I remember being SO hyped up to see the 1998 movie, but I spent the entire movie rolling my eyes and making fun of how "Godzilla" kept changing sizes throughout. After the incredible (for the time) FX of the Jurassic Park film a few years earlier, which is an experience still etched into my mind, this crap was such a let-down.
Regarding burrowing: yes and yes. After only one tunnel dug by a critter this huge, several Manhattan avenues would collapse. And he digs considerably more...
Not serious 'eh? Watch Godzilla's first outing, Gojira. Awesome review though. Every single problem (minus the acting) summed very well. fun fact: Roland later confessed to never liking Godzilla movies in the first place, just wanted the creatur to "run fast" in the movie.
Me again! 2 films for you to consider reviewing. 1981's The House By The Cemetery, a movie with more holes in its plot than a decaying zombie and Congo from 1995, big ambitions but no budget apparently. I think there's plenty to get you teeth into on these 🎃
Actually, I really liked this movie when it premiered in 1998. But I was very confused as to why they called it "Godzilla", when it was obviously, and most decidedly, a revised remake of "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" ? Had they given this title to the movie I'm quite certain the movie would have been more positively received and reviewed.
The best Godzilla films are Gojira (1954), Mothra vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1974), Gojira (1984 aka Return of Godzilla), Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1993), Godzilla vs Destoroyah, Godzilla 2000, GMK, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla and Tokyo SOS, Godzilla (2014), Shin Gojira, Godzilla vs Kong. Now it’s subjective but these are the over all most loved by the fan base.
This type is a mutated Iguana I encountered both varieties in Cuba land and seagoing they do burrow and are aggressive. I think if Emerich would have added that one this critter was female and the testing was done during the mating season then the whole pregnancy thing would have made sense.
I think you're being too hard on this film. It certainly has it's flaws, but I enjoyed all the action, whereas I hated all the old "man-in-a-bad-costume" Godzilla movies. They were entertaining when I was a child, but now that I'm grown-up, they're just really bad, kind of like watching Tellatubbies. Edit: please review The Mermaids of Tiburon.
More like Ferris Bueller vs Godzilla. This Godzilla didn't breathe his trademark radiation flames. It didn't look like Godzilla. I found the Japanese films featuring the big lizard himself far more entertaining than this 1998 lackluster version. I hope 2014's version is an improvement over the first time mainstream cinema did its take on Japan's icon monster.
In retrospect, while a worse movie in several respects, 1998's 'GINO' genuinely entertains me more than 2014's 'Cardboard Man And Occasional Glimpses of Godzilla'. 1998's human cast may be kind of petty, but at least they possess emotions in the first place. The main human character in 2014 really needed to be Walter White instead of Cardboard Man, joining MONARCH to help hunt down the MUTOs that killed his wife and getting vicarious revenge on them by egging on Godzilla to kill them.
In the movie the minute they showed Matthew Broderick in his car singing the showtune song "Singing in the Rain" a nod to his stage musical career, I then hated the movie. Then when I saw their movie version of Godzilla a giant lizard I then despised this long awaited for, anticipated movie even more; my heart just sank in disappointment.
The team that design zilla had a different design that looked like Godzilla but TOHO didn't like that design so zilla was made so it is a little of TOHO's fault too for the design of zilla
Amongst the many other problems with the film was the lighting choices. Who wants to watch a film that occurs entirely in the dark and in the rain? It just makes you feel miserable watching it, and the actors also look miserable. Jean Reno is the only saving grace..
I think the movie is a fun popcorn film but that's not nearly enough to pay tribute and respect to a popular and honest franchise that is very near and dear to Japan as well as fans of Godzilla. This was the film that got me into Godzilla and I loved the film as a kid yet now though I don't hate it as much as a lot of fans it still isn't that great. The original is a classic story of discussing political dilmmeas, nuclear disasters, horror and an anti-war message warning us about the possible future.
I liked this movie, dammit! Yes, the casting is questionable and the writing is dull, but the design of Godzi (YES I WILL CALL HER THAT!) is beautiful. She looks fluid, organic, like something that could really be alive. She's a helluva lot better looking than Slabzilla from 2014. And keep yer arguments for somebody who cares.
No offense to Matthew Broderick, but one of the other leads here is Hank Azaria, a comedy genius from "The Simpsons" and "The Bird Cage". Maybe Emmerich should have taken the hint and just gone for absurd comedy.
There were so many weird choices, besides the obvious stuff they did wrong. Why were Siskel & Ebert characters in the movie? Yeah, I know they're mad that those guys didn't like their movies. But having Roger Ebert as the mayor just takes you right out of the movie and makes you think about why the director put them in there. Why are there so many Simpsons actors? That news reporter is basically just Kent Brockman. It's not a good idea to remind people of things that they'd rather be watching in your movie. (The Simpsons hadn't turned to complete crap when this movie was released.)
"No movie should be devoid of human drama." *Godzilla: King of the Monsters points at itself proudly* "But this isn't drama, this is the petty concerns of self involved characters that wouldn't be interesting in the best of times let alone when the fate of the world is at stake!" *Godzilla King of the Monsters shamefully slinks off into the sunset, to brood and perhaps binge eat*
Godzilla fans refer to this one as G.I.N.O. - Godzilla in name only. Where was the fiery breath? The funny thing is...they made a Saturday morning cartoon out of this
For me the worst thing about it was falsely advertising Jimmy Page playing on P Diddys Kashmir. If he's there you can't hear it, and I bought all the different versions
They could have made his dorsal plates light up & giving him his automatic breath & guess what.....most Godzilla fans might have accepted the NEW LOOK. But as it stands, Godzilla fans don't consider this a Godzilla movie. And I pretty much have to agree. Which means "Godzilla vs Megalon" is still the worst of the series. Or is it "Godzilla vs Gigan"? Maybe "Son Of Godzilla"? I give up. lol
Lets see ... a plant eater turns into a fish/ flesh eater, a monster that lives in the tropics decides to go all the way around the world to go to New York where it freezing cold , the French made him, but no one seems to mad at them about it. To say this movie sucked ass, would be too kind ...
Of all this movie's many, many sins I think by far the worst was the cast. NO ONE was likeable except maybe Jean Reno. The characters were utterly hateful and I wanted them all to die horribly in agony.
I only saw it in the cinema and then the cartoon. Yes, there was a cartoon, in which Godzilla was a kind of pet for the scientist. The 09 year old me loved it!
Glory, the civil war film was the best Matthew Brodrick role he ever had. Most of his films are crap, yes, even Ferris Bullar. I thought it was dumb that the Worm expert came up with all the good idea's while the Palentologist came up with Nothing. It was an insult to female scientists everywhere.
Even if they got Godzilla right, this version would still suck because of the horrible cast. Matthew Broderick as the lead? I know Godzilla is the 'star' but that's still a baffling choice. The rest of the cast is atrocious too. I like the Simpsons as much as the next person but that doesn't mean they are interesting live-action actors. The only decent actor is Jean Reno and they screwed that up too by making him a little too French instead of him just acting normally.
I agree that this was the worst ever! I remember seeing the first commercial trailer on New Years day '98. The movie wasn't released until May! They had to build it up for 5 mo's just to get people to watch it!!!!!
Really, all the Godzilla films are terrible except for the first one? Gee, no wonder you hated this film. No point arguing, you probably loved The Giant Claw.
I was pretty disappointed in this one. I did have fun watching it, the effects were great (save for the main character’s face, which looked like a train in closeup - no eyes even visible) ….. maybe it was not enough, but I have strong views about what I call “licensed Godzilla” or “American Godzilla”. I think every example of this is, sadly, garbage and detestable. Most of the Toho productions from the 1990s, I think, were bad, but they were produced by Toho and were honest efforts, and legit efforts. Licensing and sodomizing the character is not the real thing -
GODZILLA! I don't care what people say about this movie I still like it. I saw it twice at the theater. I have the VHS and the DVD of it too. I do wish I could have bought the action figure long ago. It's better than Fatzilla.
Except that this is NOT a Godzilla movie, it's Godzilla in name only as it could had been called something else and it wouldn't had pissed off fans of the Japanese creature,
Yes, you hit all the necessary points there. That film sucked! It was an utter disgrace to the name and tradition of Godzilla/Gojira. It was bad in so many ways. Well, don't be surprised, because EVERYTHING Roland Emmerich touches turns to absolutely MORONIC OVERBLOWN SHIT! He is the Kiss of Death to anything resembling "art", "moderation", "subtlety" or "good taste". He is the antithesis to all that is worthwhile in film. And that's why I scrupulously avoid his movies now. If he made a movie....forget it! If he even came near it in any way, avoid it at all costs.
This film really was rubbish. The script is terrible, the monster is just wrong, and the lead is completely miscast. The teaser trailer for it was good, though...
If it hadn't been called Godzilla but given a title like The Giant Amphibious Monster That Attacked New York then it would probably have gotten better reviews as, on that level, it's quite entertaining and Jean Reno is terrific
Ah, yes, THAT Godzilla... 1998's Godzilla has a lot of the bad and none of the charm of the Toho movies -- and it adds a few pounds of its own badness. It's a Hollywood action film with the typical kind of Hollywood stupid you see in many films: bloated budget, lots of explosions, but with a dumb and nonsensical story, and no charisma. (Note that I am NOT saying every action film from Hollywood is stupid, it's just that the ones that are this stupid seem to drink from the same pool of stupidity.)
translation: This Hollywood version of Godzilla is not recognized as a Godzilla movie in Japan. Is it Godzilla eating fish? Even a child-pafe-like Godzilla movie made in Japan is highly evaluated. Even when it ’s bad
NONE(?!!) of the other GODZILLA movies are GOOD but the first one? WHAT?!! Have you not seen Godzilla -vs- Mothra (or the Thing)? It's a GREAT movie!!!!
I saw this one in the theatre when it came out. When Zilla finally made its appearance my first thought was, "So when will the REAL Godzilla show up and kill this thing?"
Final Wars was too little, too late.
:)
Yeah. Calling all Godzilla sequels bad is just mean.
Godzilla vs Biollante was a total slog.......
I know, this was bad. But I was happy. I just like to see giant lizards. You know? I'm a simple creature. 🐉
The animated version gave us the Godzilla we should have had, it made sense.
IMHO, if it had not been Godzilla and just an American Kaiju film I think this film would have been better received.
Indeed. It's not a bad example of American giant-monster movies.
You have a point. Using the Godzilla name was a box office draw. The catch is making a film that doesn't live up to the name is going to earn many harsh reviews. You can kill an American Kaiju with a couple of anti-ship missiles but a Japanese Kaiju, no way.
I think you could CGI Allison Hayes from Attack of the 50ft Woman in instead of Zilla and this film still doesn't work
Actually, the climax with the baby godzillas reminded me more of Gremlins than Jurassic Park, what with dozens of the reptiles rampaging among the concession stands.
'Zilla' is a mutated iguana. Iguanas nest in burrows. Not hard to believe at all. Also, the babies are more like T-Rexes than raptors. I only watch these thing for the commentary this guy is awesome
I accidentally stumbled onto that set when I was living in NY and walked out the back door of Brooks Brothers only to find absolute carnage. I started backing up trying to get back into the building when I saw the cranes and the cameras.
I live near the Hudson River in NYC when they were filming this. I was excited to see this. I was devastated.
In spite of the great special effects, sooooo disappointing. I had forgotten it was the French's fault, how American.
The French do have a history of......
Heretic! 🙃
I am missing 5 godzilla movies.. six now that the new one came out. And
I love all of them to pieces.
I could be wrong)

tbh I liked the French guy. Brodrick got away with murder so he's right to have that hunted look in his eyes every film he's in. What I didn't like was that song at end.
Screws up Zepplin
It's so weird how people just forget that Matthew Broderick killed / maimed a bunch of people in Ireland with his reckless driving. They'll talk about Ferris Bueller and always mention that the guy that played the principal turned out to be a pedophile, but never what Broderick did.

Come on man that flying/gliding tail kick to the chest is one of the greatest tag team moves in wrestling history....uhh giant lizard/giant robot tag team moves anyways.
You’ve got to love the fact that the cast includes nearly half the characters from The Simpsons with just two actors!
I never saw this film, I just remember the Taco Bell dog riding on Godzilla's tail going through the drive thru in a commercial.
Review Anaconda if you haven't already. Love you're channel so far.
''Anaconda'' would be such a good movie withOUT J. Lo.
LOL I don't recognize him as our Godzilla neither. Hate his design I had waited for so long for this movie and my inner child was s disappointed :(
I remember being SO hyped up to see the 1998 movie, but I spent the entire movie rolling my eyes and making fun of how "Godzilla" kept changing sizes throughout.
The director who made this movie said he did not like Godzilla , and it shows
2:46 You say Gorosaurus and Baragon, but both the clips are of Gorosaurus.
Roland Emmerich's Godzilla has one major problem: it was made...
''Gojira'' (1954) came one year after the American-made ''The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms'',
but came out much better for its human side.
Me again! 2 films for you to consider reviewing. 1981's The House By The Cemetery, a movie with more holes in its plot than a decaying zombie and Congo from 1995, big ambitions but no budget apparently. I think there's plenty to get you teeth into on these 🎃

Could not make a normal review on the film.
Why'd he cross out the prefix "God" in "Godzilla?
most Godzilla fans call this monster "Zilla''.
I still find it fun, despite all the problems. I just wish they made the monster look more like Godzilla
0:33
Careful Mr. Bailes !
It's not laughing at you calling it ''desperately stupid hilariously badly made''
Lol! I always feel sorry for the actors. Have you seen Kalltiki? Or Calltiki?
Yes! ruclips.net/video/nLcjwi-PvBc/видео.html
I like the movie. The trick is to totally forget that it supposed to be a Godzilla movie. It's a good monsterflick otherwise.
This type is a mutated Iguana I encountered both varieties in Cuba land and seagoing they do burrow and are aggressive. I think if Emerich would have added that one this critter was female and the testing was done during the mating season then the whole pregnancy thing would have made sense.
Kinda hysterical that the American Godzilla blames the careless use of Nukes in South Asia on... France.
French nuclear testing was topical in the late 90's.
There's no such thing as a bad Godzilla movie save for the recent U.S remakes.
invasion of the bee girlls could be a fun review
I think you're being too hard on this film. It certainly has it's flaws, but I enjoyed all the action, whereas I hated all the old "man-in-a-bad-costume" Godzilla movies. My mothers favourite movie. Say what you want about it, I’m sure like me, it introduced us to the Godzilla franchise.

Do the last air-bender
That's not very nice. What's 'The Last Air'?
It was an insult people , an insult .

Or is it "Godzilla vs Gigan"? Maybe "Son Of Godzilla"? I give up. lol
If they didn’t call it Godzilla it would have been a fun entertaining film
You mis-spelled GINO
Review any Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer they did most of the worst Parody (should be called reference) movies
Lets see ... a plant eater turns into a fish/ flesh eater, a monster that lives in the tropics decides to go all the way around the world to go to New York where it freezing cold , the French made him, but no one seems to mad at them about it. To say this movie sucked ass, would be too kind ...
Saw it in the theatre. Hated IT. Well disappointed
How do say "Godzilla" in French? That would have made a better title.
Dieuzilla?
Yeah godzilla 1998 is don't real godzilla movie houses call just monster movie
The biggest difference between the Japanese Godzilla and the American one is the music. I love the Japanese music can't stand the American music. 👍
Those damn French.
Calling Gorosaurus Baragon... you're as bad as... the people actually in the movie...
Of all this movie's many, many sins I think by far the worst was the cast. NO ONE was likeable except maybe Jean Reno. The characters were utterly hateful and I wanted them all to die horribly in agony.
It remains one of my favorite awful and insipid films. I even own a copy on VUDU. So, who is more pathetic? Emmerich or me...?
I only saw it in the cinema and then the cartoon. Yes, there was a cartoon, in which Godzilla was a kind of pet for the scientist.
The 09 year old me loved it!
I'd forgotten about the cartoon, with the awful baby Godsuki!
It’s a bad Godzilla movie but a great disaster movie
i pure hate the zilla 1998 remake the worst ever made
I was pretty disappointed in this one.
I was just joking about the Fatzilla remark. The new Godzilla movie was alright. My nephews liked it.
Except that this is NOT a Godzilla movie, it's Godzilla in name only as it could had been called something else and it wouldn't had pissed off fans of the Japanese creature,
I bought the battery operated action figures of this Godzilla just because I liked the Godzilla roar. The toys stopped working within a year.
I hated this the first time I saw it. But taken as silly entertainment, It's not so bad.
This movie was my childhood bro :v
This is an insult to all Kaiju movies.
My God, this film was dumpster material. The only Godzilla on par with its stupidity is Godzilla's Revenge. That one was dreadful.
It's Rhedosaurus part deux!
Yes, this one sucks and yet manages to be better than any of the other Godzilla movies. They all suck.
translation: This Hollywood version of Godzilla is not recognized as a Godzilla movie in Japan. Is it Godzilla eating fish? Even a child-pafe-like Godzilla movie made in Japan is highly evaluated. Even when it ’s bad
@@DarkCornersReviews 確かファイナルウオーズで「ジラ」とかいう名前でゴジラに瞬殺されてましたね。この後「シンゴジラ」と言う傑作が生まれたおかげでメンツは保ってますね
How the heck would it reproduce asexually?! 😂😂🤣🤣☠️
NONE(?!!) of the other GODZILLA movies are GOOD but the first one? WHAT?!!
Have you not seen Godzilla -vs- Mothra (or the Thing)? It's a GREAT movie!!!!
as many times and characters refer to godzilla as a giant lizard ....this is the only time its true
