I'm so glad I found your vlog. I'm a doctor and I'm doing a Pediatric residency. I've been dreaming about going to mercy ships for so many years... It still seems far aways but your videos gave a lot of material to inspire myself. Thanks!
Jéssica de Oliveira Silveira wow how awesome-and a wonderful dream to have, i hope it comes true someday! Thank you so much for watching and don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions or want to see something in particular on the ship-I️ keep a list of running vlog ideas that I will slowly but surely get to :)
I found you through Jay, and I think you will go far in the vlogging world. You are so upbeat and obviously love what your life has been like growing up and now serving as an adult on a Mercy ship. Thank you for what you are doing for so many people who don't have the means to receive care!
Hi Carys, I am so glad that I found your vlog. I am going to join the Africa Mercy this August in Senegal, and starting to plan what to bring with me. Thank you so much for these super helpful information! Maybe I will see you on the ship soon!
I am so glad you found my vlogs too! I am going to make a what to pack part II specifically designed for the Senegal field service so make sure to check that out before you go! I am planning on coming back to visit the ship in November so if you are still aboard we will definitely meet! Can't wait!
Thanks so much for this (and all your VLOGs) I used this as my guide for packing, and it was on point! I’m in the middle of my 3 weeks of service and you’ve helped me stay comfortable and organized aboard. Thanks again, and keep it up. Oh and good luck in your studies!
Mark Jones haha hey thanks! It’s funny because people really do come prepared for an apocalypse like event 😁 thanks for watching and commenting! You’re awesome!
Hi Carys, I'm coming to the ship in about 4 weeks and super excited. I wanted to know how many times have you served on the ship and also what department do you serve in? Can't wait to join and meet some pretty incredible caring people. Jess
Hi Jessica! That's so awesome, I'm excited to meet you in 4 weeks! I lived my first 18 years aboard the ship and am now coming back after being away at college the last 4 years. So although I have lived aboard awhile and came back to visit almost every year I was at college, this is my first time coming back as a volunteer. I'm going to be serving as a chaplain onboard :) The ship is such a unique and life changing experience, I can't wait for you to get there!
I have a question! Is it ok to bring an extension cord with multiple American outlets so I can just use that with my one adaptor? Or would plugging in too many things at once in the one outlet be an issue? Also, do you have any suggestions for what kinds of shoes to bring? Thanks! :)
Those are some great questions, you can definitely bring that kind of extension cord so long as the things you plug into it are 220 (in the volt system) so for example you would be able to plug in your lap top, phone, camera (most likely), but things like straight irons and curlers tend to be 110 and so they would be fried unless they are duel voltage. And when it comes to shoes, yes! I like to have a pair of sturdy flip flops of some type, a pair of dress flats and sturdy trainers that can double as hiking shoes (if you're into that thing). Anything else is just a bonus :)
@@CarysParker Thank you for answering these questions that I was about to ask! :) I am wondering if I am in a room of 4,6 or 10 people, would I have plug in close to my bed so that I can charge my phone etc. easily? Thanks in advance!!
So fun to watch! I'm thinking about one day volunteering but was also curious Considering your parents have volunteered for almost 30 years, how do they earn money to make a living? Such admirable people.
Hi from UAE! Great vlog, thanks for sharing. I have several questions 1. how to join the ship? 2. Are there any requirements to be fullfilled regarding age, education, money, time?
Hi Maner, you can apply to join the ship by visiting our website: www.mercyships.org/ and yes there you will find how much it costs to join, what jobs are available etc. I hope you find a job opening that interests you! and thanks for watching! :)
It’s feels odd to me for much needed volunteers to be worried about changing their own personal behavior to fit in to local customs. But I guess one exception could be if there are a lot of local crew that work on the boat then I could understand doing it for them. I'm just not sure if that's the case or not. IDK. But anyway, I’m enjoying your videos and appreciate your videos.

I grew up on the ship for 18 years and now am back for a year after finishing at University :)

Thanks so much for watching! We have approximately 200-250 local crew who work on board with us and lots and lots of patients in our hospital wards!
