Thanks so much for this. I figured I’d start you out with a radio hit but Grateful Dead has plenty of amazing songs. Estimated Prophet is one of my personal Favorites. 💀✌️💀
These guys were at the centre of the Hippie movement, live from heart of Haight and Ashbury San Francisco …”Cherry Garcia” was lead guitarist for most of their tunes.
The Grateful Dead are so much more than folk.... psychedelic insanity, super funk, and just good old rock. And to answer your question, yes, Jerry Garcia was the lead guitarist. Once you know Jerry's tone, you'll never forget it. Dig deeper into this band for sure - hundreds of songs over a 30 year catalog. Terrapin Station and The Other One are two of my personal favorites for heavier/deeper, and Jack Straw is another great shorter one.
Boys welcome to the dead ... Yes that was Jerry on lead guitar and vocals ... He did that sometimes bobby other times sang .. but Jerry was great .. welcome to what they thought of as a dance band ... And I did love to watch the girls dance to them as they were tripping
Bobby has a daughter that's only like 20 years old. The man is a beast dating a go go girl from the 60's Them marrying the sister of a race car driver and having a model for a daughter.
Oh, man...so much to tell! "The Dead" were not only from SF but they shared a block with The Jefferson Airplane (and others) in the Haight-Ashbury district where it all began, as you said....and, not only were they at Woodstock, but it was singer-lead guitarist Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead that gave Carlos Santana and his band LSD.......Santana thought they had plenty of time to trip and come down, but they were forced to perform hours earlier than they were scheduled to....so the entire band played their set on acid!
Jerry Garcia is the lead guitar player for the Dead, they were at Woodstock. People quit there jobs just to tour the country and the world just to see them. Jerry is the most amazing guitarist on the planet. Check out Grateful Dead ,, Europe 72 playing in the band. Etc.
OMG, The Dead are Rock n' Roll!!!✌✌ They play every genre from country rock to Acid Rock!!! I saw the Dead first play "Touch of Grey" in 1982 and it came out on record in 1987, Jerry passed in 1995 at their 30 year marker. The band never faded, for many years they made more money touring than any other band on the planet, maybe one year the Rolling Stones beat them!!! The Grateful Dead 36,086 songs, 2317 concerts, 298 cities, 11 members, 30 years 👍👍👌👌✌✌😁😁
I was a teen in san Francisco when jerry died. It was a sad day... At ben and Jerry's ice cream on haight and Ashbury st there was a huge totem made of flowers, stuffed animals and pics for him. Deadheads were sitting in a line for blocks on the side walk crying and singing the Grateful dead songs... It was a trip. He was a great musician and they great band!
They were getting older, and Jerry's health was failing slowly while he was trying to cope with serious addiction issues. But it's alright. They will survive.
They had a terrible performance in the middle of a thunderstorm, shocks going on all across the stage. It didn't make the cut for the movie but theres some footage of Jerry backstage.
Their self titled album known informally as Skull and Roses, also refered to as Skullfuck, is a great introduction to the Dead. It shows their versitility. Everything from straight kick ass rock and roll to prog to country ballad and everything in between. My personal favorite is a cover of an old Buddy Hollie tune that jam morphs into a traditional folk tune with a rock twist, "Not Fade Away/Going Down the Road Feeling Bad" . Some of the best music you'll ever hear.
I saw them here at three rivers stadium shortly before he passed. Don’t remember a lot of it except that it started raining… and they covered the Beatles song Rain haha
That was my 23rd and last show. Never had the heart to see later iterations of the band. Did a bit of deadheddin around the midwest summer of 1980, 14 shows in all prior to heading to Great Lakes. Did quite a bit of aisle dancing and met a bunch of great people. Ain't no luck I learned to duck.
They played this live in the early 80s before it was on a record. Jerry sang lead and played lead. Jerry passed in 95. For cool older Dead tunes check out Sugar Magnolia or Uncle John's Band or Truckin.
Song came out in 1987, and Jerry died in 1995. Other Grateful Dead songs to check out are "Casey Jones" "Truckin" "Friend of the Devil" "Sugar Magnolia" and "Shakedown Street"
The song hit in 87. Jerry died in august 95. He definitely got to experience the 10,000 people touring every summer plus the filled to the brim stadiums. They were the number 1 touring band through the 90s pulling more people and cash than anyone. Jerry sang lead and played lead guitar. They had the mild hits from the era but this was the breakthrough that put them right back in the game. They did play a lot of folk but were also largely known for their more electric rock and roll sound. The folk was at the smaller venues but the big venues they played the electric jam band sound they’re known for
An absolute classic song, my parents are Deadheads so their music was always around me growing up. As a result I love this band. As for other Grateful Dead songs to check out, react to "Truckin", "Casey Jones" "Uncle John's Band" and "Ripple" for starters. I could go on and on. Like I said their music was mostly what I heard as a was a child growing up.
There was a short hippie revival when this came out in the 80’s. Greatful Dead , Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and the soundtrack for Platoon. I would say it kinda brought the generations together musically. ✌️
my mom was a hippie metalhead, weird but awesome mix, and i grew up listening to the Dead. they’re one of the ultimate cross-generational bands… everyone i know loves them. my mom saw them live in the 60s and my younger cousin saw them live in the 90s 😊 i still remember when i was in like 10th grade i made homemade christmas cards with the dead bears and turtles dancing in christmas hats, and it said “have a Jerry christmas and a happy Bob Weir” that’s how popular they still were 😃
Jerry had influences from folk, bluegrass, country, and rock. Jerry and at least one other member started out in a Jug Band in San Francisco. But as mentioned, their sounds range from folky acoustic songs, to rock n roll, to psychedelia and space-rock, to bluesy and country sounds. All over the place. But their biggest thing is extended jams in their live shows. This song is as good as any studio record to start with. Other good studio songs to check out: Box of Rain Sugar Magnolia Truckin' Eyes of the World Loose Lucy King Solomon's Marbles Hell In a Bucket Estimated Prophet Any Dead fan will tell you that their live stuff is where it's at. Objectively it can be a bit uneven in performance and sound. But a few terrific live performances from early live albums: Bertha Playin' In the Band Me & My Uncle Cumberland Blues China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider (need to do them together, they run together anyway) Jack Straw Tennessee Jed And that's not to get into the absolutely massive collection of concert recordings by the fans....
Probably been said already, but this came out in the mid-'80s, and revitalized The Dead until Jerry passed away in 1995. My favorite of their songs is "Box Of Rain": I remember biking around the back roads of my college town with it on my Walkman.
They have countless classic songs. Please do more, it’s hard to make a list but for me must listens would be, “Deal”, “Jack Straw”, “Terrapin Station”, “Wharf Rat” more of their funk wave would be “China Cat Sunflower” or “Shakedown Street”. There’s just so much
What’s crazy is I was thinking of Pat Patterson the other day his face yelling was for some reason the first thing that came to mind when I thought of pro wrestling
Grateful Dead is Americana which is an smorgasbord of folk, rock, R&b, psychedelia, jazz and calypso. Jerry Garcia was the lead guitarist who had an extremely unique style complimenting Bob Weir's unique rhythm guitar. The band shared singing duties depending on the song. Robert Hunter was the lyricist for "Jerry tunes" and John Perry Barlow was the lyricist for "Bobby tunes", mostly. Grateful Dead was all about the live experience as it was all happening in the moment. They mostly walked out on stage with a blank canvas ( no setlist ) and let the energy of the moment guide them through the show. Shows consisted of two sets mostly, but on very special occasions ( mostly NYE ) they performed three sets. This made the event run around four hours. Grateful Dead are arguably responsible for the evolution of concert sound ( see Owsley Stanley ) and pretty much made it up as they went. They had peaks and valleys during their 30 year run with high points in '67, '69, '71, late '73 into '74, spring '77, '81-83, '87, '89, spring '90, spring '93. You can check all that out on the Live Music Archive and through various official releases. Thanks for this reaction. I love witnessing new folks finding the gem that is Grateful Dead and brings warmth to my soul. Peace ✌️ Edit: Touch of Grey was first performed in 1982. Jerry Garcia passed on August 9th, 1995.
Ratdog played the club I used to work at 20 years ago, I spent a hour talking to a old dude sitting on the stage during sound check, only later to find out it was Bob Weir, had no clue!!! Ha
this song came out in the mid 80s. I believe it is the only commercial hit they ever had. It broke the top ten and turned the Dead into the most successful touring band in history up to that point in time. They were bringing in 100 million dollars a year just from touring.
and apparently it was just announced that martin scorsese is doing a grateful dead biopic, and jonah hill is going to play jerry garcia 🤭 ngl, that casting is brilliant and i can’t wait to see it 😃
Grateful Dead was at Woodstock, they played when the stage was actually shifting under their feet, because of all the rain. Lead Guitar Player and Vocalist Jerry Garcia is in the movie "Woodstock", holding up a joint and saying "Marijuana, Exhibit A", in a sarcastic, knowing voice. "Touch of Grey" was The Dead's only Top Ten Hit, it made it to Number 9, Number 9, Number 9...
Touch of Gray was released in 1987. But, the Dead started playing it in 1982. The Dead often played songs for a quite a while live before they recorded them in studio.
The Grateful Dead's peak was the 70s, though their 60s stuff is amazing and they were great live in the 80s. Check out live songs from 1977 or 1978, those were great years. Songs like Scarlet Begonias / Fire on the Mountain, China Cat Sunflower / I Know you Rider, Terrapin Station, Eyes of the World, Estimated Prophet.
@@scottlefaivre6889 no…. The song is from 1987. Jerry died in 1995. I was 19 years old in 1995 and I definitely remember watching that video when I was much younger. Hi 😊👋🏽
Some of the guitar riffs in this one were a lot like Mark Knofler (Dire Straights) but the band flows so easily from one rhythm and style to another; a beautiful blending of sounds.
I do love this song, but you gotta check out some Grateful Dead from before the 80s. I recommend Friend Of a the Devil, New Speedway Boogie, or Easy Wind. Love it, y’all, keep it coming. Peace. Also Jerry Garcia is their lead guitarist, but they tended to switch singers on different songs. This is Jerry singing here though.
Great reactions - I always say that a Dead show's a 3-hour grin. You guys would have been right at home at the Fillmore West in 1969 or Red Rocks in 1978.
Touch of Grey was the Grateful Dead's only Top 10 hit in their thirty year run (1965-1995). The song actually came out in 1989, I remember because I was there, sort of. Saw my first Grateful Dead concert 9/6/80 in Lewiston, Maine, an awesome show if you can find a good copy of it. They do exist. Starts with Alabama Getaway and ends with Brokedown Palace, and there is 205 minutes of music along the way. Including: Sugaree, Friend Of The Devil, China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Promised Land, Shakedown Street, Lost Sailor/Saint Of Circumstance, The Wheel, Playin' in The Band and One More Saturday Night. And there's more. Try that. Only got to 50 shows, but they were ALL really good. Some were even great.
Grateful Dead is a long strange trip in itself. A 30 year rabbit hole. Formed in 1965 in San Francisco around the Haight Asbury area. So yes, they were around at the first Woodstock, but if I recall right, they had faulty equipment and didn't release their performance. Touch of Gray was their only #1 song in their career. They defined the jam band mentality and even allowed fans to tape their shows. As far as more songs, Uncle John's Band, Trucking and Scarlett Begonias are some good ones, as is Friend of the Devil. By the way, Touch of Grey was late 80s. Jerry passed in the mid 90s and was only in his 50s.
I've been a Deadhead for almost 30 years, and I really enjoyed this video. This song is actually from the 80s, I remember seeing the video on MTV when I was a little kid, early 80s. I was 18 and just graduated when Jerry died, it broke my heart. I was fortunate enough see the band a few times with Jerry when I was 16/17. I've seen the newer manifestation, Dead & Co, countless times. Please react to The Music Never Stopped by Grateful Dead, 70s Era, with Donba Jean. You won't be sorry😍
This band is realy great and this song is good ! Bro's do know the band Brotherhood of man and the song i love is "Kisses for me " if you find this song can play it for cause i hear this when i was a little kid, every time i lisent it i for feel lucky ! Greatings from germany ❤ ❤ ❤
A few suggestions for ya: - The ENTIRE Workingman's Dead album (1970) - Scarlet Begonias/Fire On The Mountain from their 5/8/77 show at Cornell University - Jack Straw, Row Jimmy, Tennessee Jed, and He's Gone from Europe '72 (1972) - Eyes Of The World from Without A Net (1990) - The ENTIRE Grateful Dead album (otherwise known as Skull & Roses or Skullfuck, 1971) - Box Of Rain, Ripple, Sugar Magnolia, and Brokedown Palace from American Beauty (1970) - Dark Star from Live Dead (1970) - Hell In A Bucket from In The Dark (1987) - Althea from Go To Heaven (1980) - Cold Rain & Snow from Grateful Dead (yes, two of their albums are self-titled, which is why most of us refer to the other one as 'Skull And Roses,' 1967) - That's It For The Other One from Anthem of the sun (1968) - Cassidy from Reckoning (1981) You guys could start a new channel just listening to their music, tbh ✌🤘
This video is hilarious. I love the fact that you guys don't have much of a clue about the Dead, which is totally cool. Apprecitate the effort. So funny how one dude seems curious, the other dude just drops one piece of misinformation after another. No offense intended, us Dead fans are a little compulsive. I enjoyed this a lot and hope you guys review some more Dead and learn about them.
Sorry I'm not a patron member right now, I've been having so much in the way of financial struggle, but I'd love to hear y'all to play a couple songs I've been trying to request
If you can get the trash talk in army behind the songs you want to hear you don't have to be a patreon member I'm sure all you have to do is pretty much ask for that song every video they do and ask for some help from some big dogs like Morris Uncle Mark or Shan 5 or either of the Tiffany's or Christina
@@metalguru85 hi sorry I'm late to answer in this, I was trying to get them to play this while it was still Halloween, I thought it would be a very appropriate (Skynd- Richard Ramirez) The Kottonmouth Kings- new destinations (my all time favorite) Cradle of filth- Queen of winter, throned, and bathory Aria I figured they would appreciate some of these
The dead is folk 100% rosemary and morning dew is my favorite but trucking and friend of the devil are there most popular tunes. Sublime did a cover of scarlet begonias that is friggin awesome
The Guitarist singer that your thinking is so awesome is Jerry Garcia. The main lyric writer Robert Hunter. Some of the more popular songs are at least the more popular Dead head songs that are worth checking out are , Ripple, China Doll, Warf Rat, Truckin'(that one most people have heard), and my own favorite cause my daughter was named after the song, Cassidy. BUT I would encourage you both to check out Billy Strings doing another Robert Hunter lyrical master piece " Thunder". That one was just debut in July when Bill Krutsmann the drummer for the dead handed the lyrics over the Billy and asked him to put music to the lyrics. This was the result, and it is mind blowing ruclips.net/video/hC5bUipLGds/видео.html.
No worries Hollywood, I was not prepared for them to sound how they sound when I first heard them either. Keep on rockin' in the free world! Devildriver - The Mountain Unearth - Endless
Touch of Grey ,,was the only top 10 song 1987 . He died in 1995. They were the uptown jug champion s then the warlocks then changed there name to The Grateful Dead in 1965 .
Thanks so much for this. I figured I’d start you out with a radio hit but Grateful Dead has plenty of amazing songs. Estimated Prophet is one of my personal Favorites. 💀✌️💀

Welcome to the world of the Dead. 🌹
fy, Jerry played lead and Bob Weir played rythym guitar. Jerry's guitar prowess should never go unnoticed, he was a fantastic guitarist!!
I wonder why they didn't think Jerry was the lead guitarist.
They're much more the than folk music and yes they were at the original Woodstock
They deserve our utmost respect...Bobby is still touring at 75 years old...the drummers are in their late 70s. I've been seeing them since 89

I'm almost sure Smokey was right that it was 95. I could be wrong though... Hi Shan 5 or better known as 🖐️ lol.. Again happy birthday Tiffany
@@scottlefaivre6889 no…. The song is from 1987. Jerry died in 1995. I was 19 years old in 1995 and I definitely remember watching that video when I was much younger. Hi 😊👋🏽
Pure folk: Ripple,Morning Dew, Uncle Johns Band
Da funk: Shakedown Street
Prog Rock: Terrapin Station
Some of the guitar riffs in this one were a lot like Mark Knofler (Dire Straights) but the band flows so easily from one rhythm and style to another; a beautiful blending of sounds.
The Dead are their own genre.
They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones who do what they do." ~ Bill Graham
The word your looking for is Blues
Casey Jones. Is my all time fav of the dead
Such a delightful song! So catchy!
Touch of Grey debuted live in 1982, was recorded and released in 1987. Jerry died in 1995.
Fire on the Mountain is a badass Grateful Dead song
A few suggestions for ya:
- The ENTIRE Workingman's Dead album (1970)
- Scarlet Begonias/Fire On The Mountain from their 5/8/77 show at Cornell University
- Jack Straw, Row Jimmy, Tennessee Jed, and He's Gone from Europe '72 (1972)
- Eyes Of The World from Without A Net (1990)
- The ENTIRE Grateful Dead album (otherwise known as Skull & Roses or Skullfuck, 1971)
- Box Of Rain, Ripple, Sugar Magnolia, and Brokedown Palace from American Beauty (1970)
- Dark Star from Live Dead (1970)
- Hell In A Bucket from In The Dark (1987)
- Althea from Go To Heaven (1980)
- Cold Rain & Snow from Grateful Dead (yes, two of their albums are self-titled, which is why most of us refer to the other one as 'Skull And Roses,' 1967)
- That's It For The Other One from Anthem of the sun (1968)
- Cassidy from Reckoning (1981)
You guys could start a new channel just listening to their music, tbh ✌🤘
They did play at woodstock but had major equipment issues because of rain there is a interview of Garcia talking about being electricuited
Jerry Garcia was the lead vocalist and lead rhythm guitar for the Dead. You should do a deep dive into the Grateful Dead
Some friends used to have a wrestling/metal podcast called Neckbreaker that was rad. I'd check yours out, for sure.
What songs you looking for Robert?
@@metalguru85 hi sorry I'm late to answer in this, I was trying to get them to play this while it was still Halloween, I thought it would be a very appropriate (Skynd- Richard Ramirez)
The Kottonmouth Kings- new destinations (my all time favorite)
Cradle of filth- Queen of winter, throned, and bathory Aria
I figured they would appreciate some of these
@@scottlefaivre6889 thank you guys so much, I appreciate it I'm sorry for the late reply
@Marissa North talk text got me again..I'm sure one exists though 😁
Great reaction love your energy
The dead is folk 100% rosemary and morning dew is my favorite but trucking and friend of the devil are there most popular tunes. Sublime did a cover of scarlet begonias that is friggin awesome
Check out. Uncle John's Band and ST Stephen from the Dead
Chlorine and Wine by Baroness
We covered this one and boy was it an interesting one e
No worries Hollywood, I was not prepared for them to sound how they sound when I first heard them either.
Keep on rockin' in the free world!
Devildriver - The Mountain
Unearth - Endless
You have to listen to some live dead to fully appreciate their talent. Shows from 77 are some of their best IMO.
Your killing me on this one im just gonna leave this one alone.. great vid guys
For a couple fellas like you I would suggest "West LA Fade Away" "Shakedown Street" or "Jack Straw"
Touch of Grey ,,was the only top 10 song 1987 . He died in 1995. They were the uptown jug champion s then the warlocks then changed there name to The Grateful Dead in 1965 .
Have you ever gone roller skating? Trucking was a playlist at most skating rinks
Check them out from '77. Listen to Estimated Prophet, an absolutely amazing track!
