  • Every year, starting with Black Friday, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office anticipates an increase of counterfeit money and credit cards to be used.
This year has proven to be no different.
Deputies have seen a unique set of counterfeit $100 bills appear within the last couple of weeks in Covington and Slidell.
These bills (old style $100s) contain a security strip and watermark of Ben Franklin, which most counterfeit bills do not.
The only real giveaway for someone who is not trained in the security features, is that the paper is a little thicker and has a slick texture. The watermark is lightly printed on as well, and can be seen up close under light. Just be aware of this.
The bills are suspected to be from out of the country and have been passed in businesses from New York to Louisiana.
Retailers are asked to be extra careful when accepting large bills from customers during the busy holiday shopping time.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office has prepared a short video on how to detect counterfeit bills and what to do if you think you may have one.
