- Western Meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta) are one of three species of Meadowlark in North America. As the name suggests the species is mostly found in the western part of the continent. The other two Meadowlarks (Eastern Meadowlark and Chihuahuan Meadowlark) are mostly found in the eastern and southern part respectively.
Although quite common in suitable habitat, Western Meadowlarks are often heard before they are seen. The three Meadowlarks are best identified by song, the Western Meadowlark having a more vibrant song, often described as buoyant or flute-like.
Interestingly there are 8 species of Meadowlark in the world and only the three species occuring in North America have a yellow breast. The other five species all occur in South America and all have a red breast. - Животные
