This song just shows how cleverly earlier barbie movies were written. There is a very smart plan, and the way the girls solved it too was very clever, and it also showcased their bravery and how smart they were, especially in a time where girls weren't treated very well. This is just such a good movie and it's obvious the writers spent a lot of time on it. It's sad that Barbie movies have degraded so much through the decades..
I really like it how they are strong characters but not forced. They do not actively kick butt, they do not gag at colour pink, they are not vulgar. They are girly and yet so smart and acti e and amazing
This is why I cannot watch Princess and The Popstar. It contradicts everything in this movie. They completely butchered 'To Be a Princess' That song showed that being a Princess isn't all glitz and glam and there is a lot of personal sacrifice involved. Whereas the Princess/Popstar version did the opposite and said how easy it was and how awesome it is. For example: 'Do keep a grip and never crack. Stiff upper lip and arch the back.' A line about keeping your feelings and wants to yourself to be the Princess the people need, turned into 'Pose with a feather in your hat. Stretch on a golden yoga mat.' Like those are the hardest things that she has to do. The entire movie is like that.
This is one of the reasons why the Princess and the Pauper was one of the best Barbie movies ever. The villain is truly conniving and this song adds to that. I prefer the movies where the villain is plotting something truly dastardly, something that makes them worth foiling in the end. Come on, Mattel, get back to something like this!
Iary Smith Well, I wouldn't mind pop music in it so much if they'd just make it more clever and enjoyable. I mean, if they have movie versions with pop versions available, that would be great! Just as long as the writing is good like it used to be.

The older Barbie movies were so well written, and pretty well acted, too. Preminger isn't one of my favorite Barbie villains per se (I prefer Gothel and the Mouse King) --- but while he was comically evil, he wasn't an idiot. I am honestly impressed as an adult by how layered the lyrics and performances are in this film. I don't know if it's just my nostalgia talking, but I've watched a few of the more recent Barbie musicals, and none of them feel this deep, lol.
When you think about it and put aside the fact that it's a Barbie movie, some villains are actually pretty dark. Preminger stole so much gold from the mines that the kingdom was thrown into bankruptcy and surely that must have affected the lives of many people living there (like that family that was shown having to move out of their home when Julian took Anneliese outside the castle, Erika's parents having to borrow so much money from Madam Carp that they also threw her into life-long debt, Julian telling Anneliese how he only lived in one room with his family because they were so poor), and only because he wanted the throne. Keep in mind that Premiger himself was a peasant before (as he admitted in his song) and should have known better what financial difficulty meant. He went so far as to not only risk a conflict between Genevieve's kingdom with Dulcenia (Dominik'a kingdom) when he took advantage of Erika posing as Anneliese (considering the ambassador was very angry thinking they were trying to make fools out of him and Dominik), but to also actually attempt murdering Anneliese, the sole heir to the throne, because, well, she just knew too much.

IKR??? I am stunned. Too bad i grew up with the German dub (which had the positive aspect that Preminger's *talking* voice was the same as the German Robbie Rotten and Iago, but still the gem that is the original was lost)
I just remembered his voice from when I was little and all of a sudden I was like- omg I need to listen to this. I need to. And I DONT REGRET IT WHATSOEVER HOW DID WE GET THIS SHAKESPEARE LEVEL SONG IN A BARBIE MOVIE WE WERE SO SPOILED WITH THIS MASTERPIECE
I legitimately have not heard this song since I was like 5 and it randomly popped into my head like a week ago for no reason at all. The really irritating part was all I could remember was the actual scene from the movie where it's sung and one or two of the words aside from "how can I refuse". I wanted to look it up but I stupidly assumed that the name of the song wouldn't be the one line I could remember Glad I finally did it so I can get the damn song out of my head Loved this movie when I was a kid tho. 10/10 only barbie movie I'll ever watch again
I'm not sure if it's my favourite lyric, but since I haven't seen anyone mention it, I really like the lyric "Raise every glass and rouse every cheer! Praise that the reign of Preminger is here!". The tune of that line is lovely (and it's the only part of the song with that tune), the way he says it is wonderful (this whole song is wonderfully acted), and also I love the instrumental of that part. And the lyric itself is just really good.
Wow, I wouldn't expect a Barbie movie of all things to have such an awesome villain song! If I made a top 10 villain songs list I would include this one! "How can I refuse?"

+ZoLexa you should listen to"Love is for Peasants"from"Barbie as the Island Princess".The villain Arianna sings about killing the King and using his head for croquet. You don't hear stuff like this in today's movies for children.
+BarbieEverAfterHigh she is psycho
ZoLexa yeag
Animedoll Island Princess is still considered an oldschool barbie movie
And Arianna sung lines intending that she killed her husband
Here 10 years later and this still hits differently. Probably the best villain song for a Barbie movie-
Martin Short didn’t have to go that hard but he did it for us
I watch this and then think of that child from Barbie and the Secret Door and sigh, because Preminger was such a good villain.
Woah that "And the moment that i get back" 1:56 just shows yet again how amazing the vocal range of this guy is
My favourite part is "So get ready with the roses and stand by with the champagne" and I cant tell you why XDDD
EXACTLY. FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WITH TASTE
I KEEO REPLAYING IT
Making a decision without me????!!!
Who does she think she is?!??!?
Uh... The queen
Lol
Preminger is such a magnificent bastard. That's the kind of villain who makes for fun scenes such as this.
Also, the line "All hail me" is gold 😂
This was stuck in my head for 3 months and I just found this. Can I get a high five?
Sierra Johnson *high five*
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
+Sierra Johnson i mean how can i refuse? *high five*
MultiCookiebox lmao
MultiCookiebox Brilliant lol
Martin Short is a GENIUS. You can just tell that he had so much fun singing this 🤣🥰
You can also tell that he was on Broadway!
this song has NO RIGHT slapping this hard
huh actually seeing the lyrics it's weird to realize that Preminger was born a peasant and has worked his whole life to get to the position he's at.
We stan a hardworking king
All hail me!
it's true ... but not in a very legal way ... obviously
Omg I used to watch this movie when I was like 4/5 and now that I'm 15 I still love this movie and I can't Martin short did this movie, he's awesome
We should become best friends
+aydee RAWR yes we should XD
Sick As Frick sameeee I'm 15 this year and I watched this when I was around that age too and I loved it so much I was really obsessed with it (my school bag was the princess and the pauper) and I still love this movie and the songs oh my god its so nostalgic. and surprisingly, the songs are deeper than I thought
I had the whole castle and pieces and outfits and everything lol. The castle would sing. I had all the outfits and Barbies and the little cats and accessories and the movie and schoolbag and all. XD I am 18 and I miss it so bad. Old Barbie move lover forever!
Bruuuh omg you’re 17 now? Time passes so fast
Martin Short is the greatest and it's obvious he had so much fun voicing Preminger
Yeah! Martin Short had an opportunity to be as dramatic and hammy as possible and he took it!
1:45-2:00 is borderline inspiring
LIKE WHY 🤣
“SILENCIO! No! I won’t let go!” please this song goes SO HARD 😭😭😭
How can I refuse to acknowledge this GEM
Anyone eles noticed he called himself "this peasant son"? 1:34
I did
Cyanide Pandemonium Interesting view on his backstory I must say
only a true peasant son bows, scrapes, and lays like a rug.
film theory better get on this
O
this voice actor is amazing omg
Martin Short is a legend
The best movie ever. I remember watching this when I was younger. I loved this movie. Me and my younger sister used to pretend to be Annalise and Erica. I would be Erica, because of my brown hair, and Maggie would be Annalise because of her blonde hair. We would get up and sing and dance along to every song in the movie. BEST BARBIE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!
Me and my sister with downs would do the same!!
I was always Annalise despite my name being Erika..LMFAO
This is my favorite Barbie movie too ^^
me and my sister would eat cotton candy ice cream and dance to the songs lol
Can we all just applaud what a brilliant job this voice actor did 👏
IKR???
I am stunned.
Too bad i grew up with the German dub
(which had the positive aspect that Preminger's *talking* voice was the same as the German Robbie Rotten and Iago, but still the gem that is the original was lost)
@@glanni but i liked Erika in German much better than in English (singing wise) idk why
Mentioning Charlemagne has the history buff inside me very impressed. GOLD.
"even though she treats me coldly, it's a sign of inner fire, for inside she's thinking, 'how can I refuse?'"
R/niceguys in a nutshell.
no literally bc that lyric is actually so scary and shows how evil preminger really is
I legitimately have not heard this song since I was like 5 and it randomly popped into my head like a week ago for no reason at all. The really irritating part was all I could remember was the actual scene from the movie where it's sung and one or two of the words aside from "how can I refuse". I wanted to look it up but I stupidly assumed that the name of the song wouldn't be the one line I could remember
Glad I finally did it so I can get the damn song out of my head
Loved this movie when I was a kid tho. 10/10 only barbie movie I'll ever watch again
okay but 12 dancing princesses
I'm not sure if it's my favourite lyric, but since I haven't seen anyone mention it, I really like the lyric "Raise every glass and rouse every cheer! Praise that the reign of Preminger is here!". The tune of that line is lovely (and it's the only part of the song with that tune), the way he says it is wonderful (this whole song is wonderfully acted), and also I love the instrumental of that part. And the lyric itself is just really good.
I think the same I loved that line
WhAt?! MaKinG a deCiSioN withOuT mEeE?! WHo doEs shE thInk sHe iSssS?!
Uh, the Queen.
I died. Can someone please make this a Broadway musical?
Things I desire:
- a moat
- an ermine coat
- palace views
and last but not least,
- this simple crown
This song alone proves that Preminger is the best Barbie villain of them all.
I mean, how could he refuse such a fitting position on the hierarchy?
This song is hella good and way too underrated.
Preminger: my ego doesn't bruise
Also Preminger: *admires his reflection on every opportunity*
why doesnt barbie make anymore villain songs? this proves that they are really good at it
“Raise every glass and ROUUSE EVERY CHAIR” my fav line tbh
i think this dude is part of the reason i got into theatrics
I love how he sings " I won't let go!"
The fact that Martin cant remember recording this makes the whole movie better.
This movie had one of the best barbie soundtracks i swear
Martin Short was acting his heart out.
I wonder if Martin Short realizes that he's everyone's favorite Barbie villain. He acted the crap out of this part and I love it
the entire princess and the pauper soundtrack is superior
Yesss
Soooooo getttttttt READY 👏WITH 👏THE 👏ROSES 👏ANDSTANDBYWITHTHE CHAMPAGNE! 🍾
I wish this song was on Spotify, I would listen to it non stop
1:38 I always thought he said “because some reckless royal chose another hoe” and I honestly lowkey like that more XD
My fav part is “NO! I WONT LET GO!”😂
his voice goes 📈
Wow, I wouldn't expect a Barbie movie of all things to have such an awesome villain song! If I made a top 10 villain songs list I would include this one! "How can I refuse?"
Best villain song ever. Point blank and period.
