i recommend penile implants as treatment for my patients with erectile dysfunction for several reasons
you may have failed oral or injectable medications
you may have tried other treatments that do not work for you
and most importantly i recommend penile implants for my patients because they provide a long lasting spontaneous durable solution for them and their partners
restoring your full erections during a penile implant procedure happens with a few short steps
the first step is making an opening in the scrotal skin this is usually not detectable once you fully heal
we then open up two small areas in your erectile tissue to place the inflatable portion of the penile implant these are what i call your erection chambers
we then place the reservoir behind your pelvic bone through that same opening
and then finally we place the pump in the scrotum and connect the device restoring your erections
almost all of my patients that have penile implant surgery with me have it performed in an outpatient setting meaning you come in for the surgery and you leave just a short time later
if you're traveling from out of town or you have medical conditions that may need to be monitored after the procedure
we can keep you for an overnight stay
i do perform a full preoperative evaluation for any of my patients undergoing penile implant surgery
if you have specialties that we need to consult in terms of clearance for medical conditions perhaps cardiology endocrinology or otherwise we certainly bring those specialists on board inform them of the nature of our procedure and get full clearance to proceed safely
with your procedure because your penile implant procedure is generally performed under general
anesthesia you will need to arrange for a ride home after the surgery
there are a few measures that i will ask you to follow in the days and weeks before your
procedure to help guarantee your best results
these may include things like controlling your blood sugars or stopping smoking
you may also be asked to wash with a special antibiotic wash to prepare your skin for surgery
and i may ask you to exercise your penis for full length and girth maximization with a vacuum erection device before your implant procedure
i recommend that you continue all of your usual or normal medications
the only exception to this may be blood thinners or aspirin
you will receive a full detailed sheet from my office and my surgery scheduler with any of this important information to prepare for surgery we ask that you do not eat or drink anything after
midnight the evening before your procedure
with regards to what you should bring to the facility on the day of your procedure
please bring a driver to help you with transportation on the way home
i will provide you with an ice pack and a scrotal support but you certainly may want to pack comfortable clothes to come home
it is very important that you do not shave any of the procedural area prior to your procedure
we have concerns that should you do this it may implant some bacteria in your skin that may compromise your result and could provide infection during your procedure
on the day of your procedure you will arrive at the registration desk from there you will be taken by a pre-operative nurse into the pre-operative care unit this is where you will put on your hospital gown and an iv will be started
we will then start antibiotics prior to your procedure you will be greeted by the anesthesiologist and their support staff you will see me and my operating room staff
from then you will go into the operative theater you'll be there usually for less than an hour and then you will recover in phase one for about a half an hour and then move back to the pre-operative unit for the remainder of your stay
once it is safe for you to go home we will send you home
it is very normal and very understandable for you to feel nervous about your procedure
understand that you're in the care of excellent health professionals and a proficient trained implant urologist that is looking forward to your best outcome
get excited about this surgery this is a life-changing moment for you and your partner
there are several avenues to provide you with information should you have questions before your surgery you may certainly call me at the office or my surgery scheduler
you may also call the facility and ask any specific questions there for anesthesia or nursing
and finally you may call my patient educator they have been through this before and are happy to help you navigate this process for your best outcome
