When I see the fountains, it reminds me of their construction in the Mother Care era reconstruction of the Commercial Hotel, and how they featured in the move "The Family Way" long before pedestrian precincts. I've lived in Canada for over 50 years, yet the images of Bolton in it's glory years surpass memories of visit's in recent years.
Amazing video. Thank God for the people who help make these videos for us all to enjoy a look back at the past. I am a Bury girl. However I had many happy times visiting Bolton with my Mum.
I have an old video with a lot of these shots on, which I bought on a visit to Bolton in 1992. I always imagine the bloke in the raincoat who appears in so many of them must be the father of the photographer!
I went back to visit my home town of Bolton a few years ago. There used to be plenty of public toilets around the town centre but they'd all been closed down, there wasn't even a public toilet at the bus station. I had to go into pubs or the Octagon to relieve myself. Don't town planners consider public toilets essential any more?
This was why I became a fashion designer. The only 'bought' dress I ever possessed was for the Trinity Sunday Walks...along with every other girl in the school! AND I was never chosen to be a train bearer.. scarred for life.
My Bolton used to be beautiful. Look at it now, it's nothing. Party due to the rececion ten years ago. It is equally the fault of the labour council! Just look at Newport St precinct, it looks like a communist nightmare! Thanks for this beautiful video memory, I shall cherrish it
ah my town! not the drab run down Newport St. the open market full of great stalls lost now. folk go to Bury.then we have a labour council that have ruined our once proud town.why vote for them?
Seeing the water fountains on the square brings the memories flooding back.FANTASTIC...BOTTY,,,T.O.B.

My town was the best.
I cried right through the video,
Thank you for the lovely memories.
I must admit I felt emotional watching that too. Born 1962 but still have a huge affinity with the place I grew up in.
@@juliejames8531 Bolton town was a great place to be in with Fred Dibbner and his steamroller, I was in class with his daughter Jane.
Sad to watch ,I so wish it was still like this.

SEND IT TO BOLTON COUNCIL AND TELL EM TO PUT IT BACK TO HOW IT WAS!! IT WAS A "PROPER" TOWN BEFORE THEY GOT THERE GRUBBY LITTLE HANDS ON IT
Oh! My beautiful hometown, what happened to you?❤ My heart is bleeding.

they closed them all, because they attracted heroin enthusiasts and batty boys.
It looks really popular in them times, but now there are hundreds of shops shut down near the bus station in town
Your right there mate more closed the open
One of the most dysfunctional councils in England. They have destroyed the town centre.
Agreed! I visited from overseas and my first impulse was to hoof it to Trinity St and visit Manchester instead!.
The brutalist barbarity of Bolton town planners is depressing. I can't bear to go back there now.

I was here in 1981 till 1984.
I was staying at Leach street then move to beaconfields street.
I like Bolton very very much.

Agree totally Carl. I was there regularly during the 70s & 80's. Can hardly bear to see it now and rarely go. Absolutely ruined.
And BEST COMMENT WAS " When You Could. Park Your Car Anywhere in the Town Centre !!!! Wish CLOWNCELLORS YES CLOWN ARE READING & Watching This ?
Exactly! Another major problem in the Bolton town centre! It’s either paying for a car slot,or finding not a single place to park!
I only miss the dance factory
Scamps was better
unfortunately most ton councilors are only there as they arent fit for proper jobs , boltons done well compared to blackpool and many other towns
Hilarious

In 20 years people will believe the comment that this was filmed in 2017. It clearly wasn't and that was just a joke.

i only remember from mid to late 80s and now it is just a dump
