- Today we’re taking a look at my watercolor brushes! There are many more types of brushes out there, but here are the ones I have and use most often. Spoiler alert, my larger round brushes are my favorites to work with as you have probably gathered from my other videos and lack of liners and flats. I should be more adventurous!

I remember as a child watching my grandfather - a retired coach painter / sign writer, painting coach lines on a van with these crazy long liner brushes. Some of them were 6 - 8 inches long made of horse hair and quill. They were very floppy when loaded with paint and were pulled along the surface like wet string. His script or lettering brushes were shorter and had square tips or angled like modern sword liners. I suspect that many of the brush types we have today have been adapted from these traditional trades.
I'm jealous! I would love to watch an old master! Any pics of his work?
I love this. My grandfather was a sign painter in old San Diego. He built and painted the signs. He also detailed pinstriping on all sorts of vehicles including the Spirit of St. Louis.
I still have some of his homemade brushes. What a treasure.
I treasure the many hours I watched him work so beautifully with the strong smell of linseed oil and freshly sawn wood in his shop.
It's great seeing an artist using synthetic over animal hair. Makes it easier for me and others to know what good synthetic brushes are out there too! Now I know that I probably will only want Princeton Neptune as a mop and not as round brushes.

I wish I watched this before I bought brushes because I started watercolor on Neptunes and found it so incredibly difficult. Recently I bought some snappier brushes and excited to try painting with them. Thanks for the review!
I love my Kolinsky natural brushes. I limited my purchases due to harvesting techniques but that makes me treat them like kid gloves so they will last forever. I do not plan on ever replacing them. I also like the Princeton Heritage synthetics. Great video showing the differences in brushes. Thanks
The flop over stage can be used quite well for doing several kinds of strokes. I was amazed when I found this out, because I always preferred a really springy brush. I have big uses for both. Excellent demonstration video, and very informative.
Thanks for this great video. I had just ordered the set of 4 Princeton Neptune brushes and this gave me a good summary of what each one does. I also played around with some of my brushes as I watched you, and it reminded me that this is a great way to warm up before I paint. I've been painting for 3 years, but haven't
really learned how to use the different brushes. This has such valuable information! Will def be watching again!

I got some Neptune brushes for my birthday, I have never tried anything like them before. All my brushes are snappy and synthetic, and I love that about them. So you can imagine I thought something was wrong with the brush or then wrong with me, for not understanding what’s going on with the floppiness! You cant go off any brush sizes as each company has its own size guide which is annoying if you are buying online. Wouldnt it be great if there was a size definition all across the board.

I have been loving my Princeton elite brushes I started out with very cheap water color brushes & when I upgraded to some Princeton elite what a difference . I just ordered a couple Princeton neptunes as well to try .

I know you posted this 4 yrs ago but on the off chance that you see this comment I just wanted to let you know that this was really helpful. I'm very much a beginner and I'm at the stage where I stepping up from cheap supplies to something better and bought my first better quality brush (the same Neptune size 12 as you and I love it btw) and was trying to work out what I should buy next. This video helped me understand much better what I want to try next. Thanks 😀
The Princeton Heritage 4050 Brushes are awesome for me! They feel so good in my hand because the handle is perfectly sized as I prefer a bit of a larger handle. The brush has the perfect amount of snap and just the right amount of point at the end annnnnd they are affordable!
Thank you! Very informative. For some reason, I use daggers almost exclusively. Maybe because I don't like changing brushes and they do pretty much everything I need to do except for the occasional rigger but, more often than not, the tip of the dagger does what the rigger does.
I have yet to own a dagger!
I just ordered three Neptune brushes a few days ago, a size 8 quill, a size 14 round and a size 10 round. Can't wait to play with them!

Hi! Thank you for sharing! I was a watercolorist but now I specialize in fine art on silk. It is SO much like watercolor!
I use the filberts, rounds and at times 00 liners. The mop brushes in sizes 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" I use the most outside of detail.

I enjoyed seeing the comparisons on all of these! The Princeton elite brush looks like a great investment. I had a ton of fun getting a good quality brush collection together last summer--love my Silver Blacks :)
I've been using the Elite on a commission today and I really like it in application!
i actually sawed down all my brush handles to a comfortable short size so i can put em in a strap in pencil case, protected when on the go

Thank you for the review! I ordered the Silver Black Velvet set - 3/4 Oval Wash, 8 round, and rigger. I love them. Holds so much water and pigment, but you have to get used to the floppiness. I always used stiff brushes. Now Silvers are my favorite. I'd love to get the 6 Quill. That will be next on the wish list. Keep up the good work!
Vicki George thanks Vicki! The quill is so much fun :) I love my size 6 black velvet and would love a larger one like a 10 or 12, however if my new elite works well I'll refrain to try to keep my contribution to the fur trade at a minimum. Darn those brushes for being so wonderful to work with!

I love pure Sable & Kolinsky brushes & have the full set of Winsor & Newton series 7 that I have used for years, as these give the best results and hold lots of water/pigment. However; as someone who now hates using animal products, I find that todays synthetic brushes give just as good if not (in some brushes) better results. So for me, I will only buy synthetic brushes in future. I love the big fat pointy brushes that can be used for details as well as washes & one brush can do me well for a complete painting. Thank you for your information about your brushes & keep up the good work. 🌈 Happy painting out there to you all 🌈

This video was very helpful. I own the Princeton Neptune brush 4, 8, and 12. At first I didn't like them because they are so soft but now that doesn't bother me, but I'm not in love with them because my 8 and 12 do not come to a point. I I have come to think that Princeton may have a few quality control issues after hearing your brush was similar. I actually thought that was how they were supposed to be. Then later I made a decision to try the Silver Black Velvet brushes and am glad I did. They are currently my go to brushes.
I agree about the quality control from what I've heard from you guys. Even thought my 12 comes to a point though, it doesn't paint a fine line and from what I was told it's not support to be super fine like a kolinsky. Still sad to hear about so many blunt ones! Im glad you like your SBVs. They're so dreamy to paint with!

What a wealth of information. Thank you for your video; it helped me choose my next three brushes and I'm confident that they're going to be exactly what I was looking for. Also saved me some money because I was going to go for the 6 and the 8 squirrel quill but with your video decided that the 6 is going to be ample. And I have barcode labels still on most all my brushes and, oddly, they seem to paint just fine. :D

I just got the Silver B.V. size 8 and 4. I haven't used the 4 yet, but I imagine its pretty fine. I sketched out a mountain scape with the 8. I definitely like how it does the wash better than the Princeton velvettouch filbert size 6. I want to get a quill for the washes. However, since Im still extremely new to watercolor, I want to learn more techniques to get what's in my mind onto the paper.
What are some things I can do to build my skill level?
I have the same problem with the exact same Neptune brush. Same size, also came from Jerry's. Crap point and mine has tweaky, slightly longer bristles at the sides of the tip that are bent. The very tippy tip bristles are actually shorter that weird bent ones. It's hard to explain. My number 6 is the same way although not as bad. I dislike them. Should have returned them. Anyway, very informative video. Thank you.
Wow! How weird - thank you for letting me know. The 12 is nice but doesn't even look like the same model due to how blunt the 8 is. I'm sorry yours has given you trouble as well! I'd try contacting them direct. The owner replied himself right away and seemed happy to help.
You have a lot of size 12 brushes. My to-go brushes are all size 8. Is there any advantage to painting with larger brushes?

What do you mean “dried pre-loaded”? Do you mean dry on the pallet vs fresh from a tube? If that is what you mean then there isn’t any trick to it, you just add water, if you want it more pigmented then you are getting allow some water to soak into it for a few minutes to break down the binding.
If you could have just 8 colours,which would you choose?

Hey Denise, I'm looking for synthetic brushes (cruelty free) which hold a good point. I have a few brushes which are great for washes etc. but I'm struggling to find a brush that holds its point well...
It's unfortunately so hard to find this information Cathy - I wish I had a better answer for you! I could give you synthetics, but it's hard to now about the cruelty free or ecologically friendly aspects.
Thank you for the demo! Incidentally Iactually find the cat's tongue to be much easier to control than the round. It's actually all I use today :)

A late question: Durability, or more to the point-how long ought we expect a synthetic brush to last if we paint daily? And a tip for budget minded people: Princeton also makes the “Snap” brushes which sproing right back to a tip for less money and the quality is comparable to their Elite line, not quite as good, of course, but very decent. Thank you!
I really can't say. It depends a lot on how the brushes are used, washed and stored. If you're really gentle with them and paint daily, I'd expect to go through several each year?
I like having a round brush without a fine point too. I love my Silver Black Velvet jumbo round.
Thank you so much for this. I'm new to watercolor and don't want to use natural hair if I can avoid it, so it's very helpful to see these two very popular alternatives compared. Did they hold up similarly over time? I planning to get a mix of the Neptune and Aqua Elite, but some of the Silver Brush Black Velvet brushes look very promising as well.
Silver Black Velvets are part synthetic and part squirrel, so don't get them if you want to avoid natural hair. I use them almost exclusively now for watercolor, so I can't really attest to how the others perform long term. I do know the tips on my Escodas wore out quickly.

I sign mine with an archival fine liner rather than a brush.
I too sign mine with fine liners however if you want to use a brush then I'd recommend liner brushes specifically synthetic ones cause natural hair would probably be pretty hard to control.

Very informative. Most natural hair brushes are a byproduct, the animals aren't killed just for paint brushes, but the companies do make a lot of money from them. I respect people who don't use natural hair brushes as a mater of principles.
richard keller thank you Richard! I'm definitely in favor of the "use the whole animal" methodology if you already hunting them for their meat but just not a fan of it when their primary use is their fur to begin with, or ivory, bones, etc :) hopefully that makes sense.
richard keller and In Liquid Color, thank you for lifting this up. i think that if more people were aware of what happens (some methods are horrific), many would choose differently. More brush manufacturers are developing substitutes now, which is great! I hope we'll encourage them, by asking and surely with our dollars.
i have done lots of searching ....and i couldnt find any good resource to draw accurate conclusions. I would definitely not want an animal to die for the primary purpose of being my beautiful brush . But i would have no problem if it comes as a by product of other industries (fur/leather/meat) . I have heard that sable hair brushes are made from the scraps of the fur industry . But i dont know anything about the squirrel hair brushes. I dont think artists produce enough demand for it to survive as an industry . Can anyone confirm ? I really would like to have squirrel hair mops ...but i dont have enough information .
That's not really true. The large majority aren't byproducts. They are animals killed for brushes & other fur products. It's a little misleading to imply that they are killed for food & THEN they harvest the fur, because unfortunately, that is rarely the case.
But in the right circumstances, I do completely agree about the "not wasting/using entire animal." ❤️🙂

Great thanks for this video!! any idea why the princeton neptune quill brushes are so much larger? As a watercolorist myself, it was nice to see the kuretake reviewed also as I occasionally use ink ink my work as well- and I have brushes set aside specifically for ink because you need a brush that will hold up to the density of the liquid. Now as for that silver black velvet 3/4 in. brush- do you know if that is also known as a cats tongue? Like riggers are also called liners or script? Does that make sense? Sorry for all the questions. To answer your question I primarily use a variety of round brushes 4-12. Sometimes I will use an angular flat brush as well. I prefer to use flats and filberts for acrylic but do much less work in that media. My favorite brush in the whole world is a size 6 kolinsky sable da vinci travel brush, but don't use it often because it stays in my travel bag. I have been using a an old grumbacher set they don't make anymore since I was in high school. Its quite a shame because the set has held up for 20 years and I think it was an academy/student set. But its time for an upgrade now which is why I was watching your video. I really like how the silverbrushes act but Im not so sure about the true animal hair. I used to work for the forest service documenting threatened and endangered species so that aspect makes me sad. I will keep looking!
Quills in general are large for their numbers. I'm not sure why, but quills across most brands should be roughly equivalent. And yes, I think you can call that shape a cats tongue on the oval wash. I'm not an expert in that type of brush, but I believe that Steve over at the mind of watercolor has a video on that type of brush :) I am a former zoo educator as well so it hurts my soul a bit to use the animal hair brushes. I didn't know the silver blacks were half hair when I originally bought them and shucks, I wish they weren't so great! The kuratake is the only full animal hair brush I have and I got it as a gift. No in a hurry to get others, especially with the synthetics are so great. I especially like my Neptunes and Elites from Princeton. Thanks for commenting and I'm glad the video was helpful! Plastic handles have the advantage of not swelling causing eventual loosening at the ferrule.

Super interesting! I'm at a loss when I try to use the really good imitation brushes; they hold too much water and paint for what I'm used to. I need more practice I guess :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I'm glad it was interesting! The synthetic sable I do okay with but the squirrels are very hard to control. I really only use the big ones for backgrounds even though I know other artists can do a whole painting with them. I need practice as well!

The uneven paint distribution is due to your use of cellulose paper. If you were to repeat this test on 100% cotton rag paper (Arches, Fabriano, Kilimanjaro, etc) you would get different results.

I have the same experience with the point or the lack thereof on the Princeton "Aqua Elite" and "Neptune" brushes that I bought and never use, because having a brush without a good point just isn't fun and didn't help me want to spend more time painting.
I didn't really expect a fine tip on the "Neptune" (since it's the artificial squirrel) brush but it was ok (not great) but still better than the "Aqua Elite"...
Oops I recently bought one, it came today. I haven’t had time to use it yet. Perhaps I should have just bought a good quality round.
@@sidilicious11 l *love* my Princeton Elites, and have no trouble getting a good point on the tips, although there are some that "point" better than others. They're my favourites.

ColoringKaria all synthetic except the silver black velvet are a blend and the kuratake brush.
I would adore any brush that holds its tip for more than 3 weeks. Suggestions for 2022? Btw I take care of my brushes but they seem so cheaply made. Like the 3 washing machines I have replaced in 14 years.
Silver Black Velvet! They're nearly the only round brushes I use these days (this topic is on the list of videos I need to get to). Excellent points, and they hold a great amount of water. You'll see them in all of my current videos.

Holy crap, you packed a ton of useful information into this video! I'm glad to know about the composition of the Silver Black Velvet brushes, because even though I don't have particularly strong opinions about real critter hair in my brushes, this will be good to know if I'm giving them as gifts. Your presentation is a perfect amalgam of fun and professional, and I love your little floating footnotes for when you realize later that things could use clarification.

OMG I need to do an entire video on why not waste money on Silver black velvet brushes. I can't figure out why so many people use them when they are just junk compared to Princeton rounds. Is it somehow cheaper somewhere? I paid 80 for a set of 3 and my Princeton Elite 4 set was only 10 more for Way better brush quality and brand.
Denise, were your chicks done with a triple loaded brush, single stroke? So sweet and so not fussy. I have that brush and love using it. I tend to over work as I come from an acrylic painting background. Maybe you could demonstrate how to handle that with watercolor?

These brushes are fairly difficult to get in Austria, where I live, or in Europe generally, so I haven't tried any of them and appreciate your thoughts. Have you used many brushes from Winsor & Newton and Da Vinci. The German company, Da Vinci, makes the very best watercolour brushes I have ever used. I use a Winsor & Newton series 7 sable, number 6 round, a Da Vinci number 12 round sable, a W&N number 3 rigger, a Da Vinci number 1 rigger and a Da Vinci number 10 squirrel mop, all of which are wonderful brushes. The number 12 from Da Vinci is my favourite; you really can do anything with this brush.

It was great seeing brushes available in the United States. Jackson's Art does stock the Princeton brushes and I considered buying one of their large flat brushes a while back, however they seem to be fairly expensive so I am sticking with my hake brush as a large flat for now. As Jackson's is based in the United Kingdom, there is often an unfavourable exchange rate for us using the Euro and their shipping costs are kind of high as well. All that combined, plus the fact I could get a similar Da Vinci brush here in the German speaking world for a fraction of the price means I have not yet had the chance to try them.
I found the Silver Black Velvet brushes are stocked by a brush seller in France, however they have not answered any of my emails, which is a pity. Perhaps my French is not as good as it once was!
Aw, I hope they get back to you soon! But alas, no need to buy brushes if you have ones that suit your needs I have to keep reminding myself of that! At the moment, my current obsession of want is one of those large 30-well porcelain palettes (I've only seen them at Jackson's and our American store Cheap Joe's). I tell myself EVERY day that is not a need, it's just a want and I have to wait for more lucrative times or a birthday or something ;)

I like my #18 and #14 Neptune rounds, but they do seem to require a fair amount of water or they get very floppy. Unless they're wet, it's hard to paint detail, despite the nice points. (BTW -- your #8 Neptune was clearly defective.)
I do like Neptune's 1.5" mottler, the 1/2" wash and the #6 Script (which is a very fun brush). They're awfully affordable too, which makes this cheapskate's heart soar.
My Black Velvets are wonderful; I own the #14 and #8 which are great, and two Jumbo Rounds (which I didn't buy and have yet to find a use for). They seem to have a touch more spring than the Neptunes. I believe the Black Velvet's bellies are a little shorter, and I can see why so many people like them.
I admit to a little schizophrenia about brushes; sometimes I want to own one of each, but other moments I crave a Peter Sheeler kind of minimalism (he seems to use only bargain-priced 1/2" wash brushes).
And I have to admit your video made me think I should try one of the Princeton 4850 brushes in a large size just to see how the other half lives.

Hahaha Tom! I'm sorry ;) Thanks for all of the other tips on brushes. I'm really glad to have gotten a replacement for the 8 round I had. I've been using the Elite on a commission today and I really like it in application!
Nice to know. I gather the Elite is a new line since a lot of retailers don't list it. Something a teensy bit stiffer than the squirrel brushes appeals to the control freak in me.
I have a few of the Princeton Heritage brushes. They don’t keep their shape.
I'm sorry to hear, I don't have too much of an issue with them, though I don't love the shape of the larger rounds from them in general. I use their small ones all the time though!
Wow. That Princeton Neptune #12 round is only $10??? Crazy low price for a brush that size and quality...
Do you ever use those big flat wash brushes?
Nick Doe I don't own one but would use one if I had them. I think they're most useful for landscape painters working with large washes.

Oh and there are brush manufacturers that have backed their sable or squirrel brushes to be as earth friendly as possible. Squirrel hair is a byproduct and would this be thrown in the garbage if brush companies did not get the hairs to make their brushes. From there even then the hairs are tracked where it came from what the treatment of animals were before they got to the brush makers and that is also tracked when exporting. A few of the better brand I think that do this are davinci and Raphael.
Erin S. that's great to hear about the companies. I've honestly tried to find info on this subject and haven't been successful. I'll try to find more on DaVinci brushes :) Thank you for your offer on the sable brushes - that is very very kind of you but I think I have enough to keep my hands full for a while! I can't take too much credit for the chickadees. It was from a Mind of Watercolor tutorial and I was just practicing brush strokes :)

I tried to find the video for you but failed! :( If I come across it I will link it as well. I also JUST found my temporarily lost Escoda Versatil brush which is a synthetic kolinsky. It was hiding and I couldn't find it for this video. I like it a lot, but I think I still like the Elite more in that range of brushes :)

I actually bought some of these brushes because on this video. 😁I had written them in my TN on my wishlist. But, I don't know 🤔 what happened, I swore I left a comment the first time I watched this??? I had come back to add to my comment about my purchase and couldn't find it. Rewatching videos: now 2019
I heard the Princeton Aqua Elite is the best sable imitation. Would like to compare them to Raphael's precision (imitation sable) as well as Escoda's. As much as I want to go vegan, I'm also environmentally conscious, if i keep replacing synthetics, it's more unrecycled waste :( whereas natural hairs can last a lifetime (so I heard older artists say)
I'm on the fence about brushes too. I am very anti-cheap brushes these days because it does produce more waste. I prefer synthetics or blends in general, but I would have to agree that natural hair brushes can last longer. There's VERY little transparency on natural hair brushes, perhaps that should be my next big project ;) It's a difficult battle!
Silver Brush is known to have very bad customer service. They don’t honour the guarantee or exchange a unit that has a manufacturing defect. Some people also report that their customer service department doesn’t even respond to requests. I think it’s best to buy from a different brand.

What if the animal was already dead?? I mean really.. I see dead animal all the time, I dont think there is anything wrong with using the fir in the situation.. breeding or hunting animal for art is different. Tank you so much for your videos!!

In Liquid Color it was throughout the entire video. The sound would go real low and then go back to normal.
TNLoving Gal I'm really sorry! I don't have the issue on my end so I'm not sure how to help. Regardless, I got a new camera yesterday so the sound will hopefully be better in general on future videos :)
