Short Circuit scenario yilum MCB trip aavum. It will trip faster than it would 've incase of a normal overcurrent scenario. Now, as you said the difference it makes for a short circuit fault of say 10kA and say 25kA is not much in the trip time. It is the amount of energy the CB has to handle for a fault on its output side. Suppose that a CB with 10kA short time rated for 1 second, it will not be suitable for use with a power source that can pump more than 10 kAkA, or, even which pumps 10kA but for more than say 1sec. What infact happens is that when you try to make the short circuit current flow through the CB contacts even after the designed short time rating ( 1 sec / 3 sec as the case may be), it will heat up very quickly and will take the whole CB mechanical components out of its thermal design values and hence, the whole thing burns out. (Basically, the energy it has to handle will be different in the two cases). Site il kondu varunna CBs can be tested by applying a current through it and verifying that it trips as per the trippping characteristics, be it MCB or a relay operated CB.
