You know Fred was happy that he didn't have to sit in the makeup chair for this scene.
For the rest of the Munster family, it was make up, but for Fred Gwane it was more than just makeup. He also had to wear a suit that was incredibly heavy and insulated. The suit had these weird weights in the arms and legs to give Herman Munster that awkward weight movement and I heard once that he had to have this stagehand pass him a cold glass of lemonade between every take.
And he lost a lot of weight I heard from Beverly Owen in an interview that he progressively got thinner and thinner doing the show
@@AmandaYee-yn9dk yeah that was very much true. I don’t know if they still do this today but back in the day Hollywood tour buses would drive around on the back lots of various studios. And I remember seeing this one video where Fred Gwane and Al Lewis walked out of the side and greeted the guests on the tour bus and they were in their makeup but not their costumes and Fred Gwane pretty much look like a Herman Munster pez dispenser.
Yes, I've read about how exhausting it was during the make-up and costume process.
FRED liked doing this episode. it gave him a break from wearing the heavy foam wardrobe/ oversize boots that made him sweat so bad that he needed an air hose to cool off. he also drank lemonade by the gallon, and still lost weight!!!!!. he hated it.
Nobody on earth can play Herman Munster like him.
Yeah, the Rob Zombie remake didn't have the same character (in the broader sense: it still had the Munsters).
Doesn't he look adorable hopefully you can scare more people away😂
@@anthonylaspisa6992 Heyyy! I've been moisturizing!
I love watching Fred act as Herman without makeup. The facial expressions are fun to see without the heavy paint job.
He looks like he could be a judge, in a small southern town🤦♂️
Youts 😃
Are you you drugs😂😂
@@999skipper2 what? What's a yout?
@@johnnyhartdawg6220 The comment about a judge in a small southern town is a reference to the film My Cousin Vinny. Joe Pesci has a broad New York New Jersey accent and refers to the two youths on trial as “youts”. If you haven’t seen the film, I’d highly recommend it. Cheers from Scotland 🏴
@@999skipper yes, I know. I'm referring to when the judge said "2 what" "what" "what is a yout" "excuse me, 2 YOUTHS"
You're right, it was a great movie
Fred Gwynne’s favorite episode. And with good reason. “Hello…sir.” 😂
Even without the heavy makeup, Fred Gwynne's facial expressions are gold 🥇
He was a good person, too. Pro Civil Rights efforts of that time
Very true !
"Mr. Gambini. Didn't I tell you the next time you appear in my courtroom, you dress appropriately ? "
"You was serious about that ? "
Hahaha. The court room scenes are great…
“We have to look at you constantly, you only have to look at you when you are shaving.”
The story of my life. 😂
He's such a handsome man and a great actor but, can we take a moment to talk about the beautiful tailoring of that suit? He looks stunning.
I mean, Gwynne probably had every major designer groveling to outfit him.
What?😂
Herman looks as if he could be a policeman in a New York precinct.
With Grandpa as his partner...
Or a judge in a southern court. “Two yutes?”
An insurance salesman...
@@andrewbesso4257Ooh ooh ooh I don't think so. A colleague married to Edna Garrett on the other hand....
Ooh! Ooh! Francis!
That iconic voice of his would be in every Pixar film ever made had he been born a different year
Absolutely!!!
I too grew up with this show and loved it. While I was walking up 2nd Ave in NYC Al Lewis( Grand Pa) walked bye. I immediately realized it was HIM. When I approached him he was an Absolute Gentleman. I offered to buy him a Beer at OUR lunch spot. He declined the Beer and chose a ginger ale. You should have seen my buddy's faces when I walked into the bar full of electricians with " Grand PA Munster"...he was an ABSOLUTE Gentleman. God Rest His Soul.
I understand he ran an restaurant for many years so he understood the value of making that conversation seem normal.
What a GRAND experience! 😊
@@Robert08010 "Grandpa's" in Greenwich Village. He used to go to every table to make sure everyone was happy with their food.
I read somewhere on the internet that the cast hated Fred doing his prescribed daily Herman Munster outfit and heavy sweating costume. They wanted Fred to get a break from it so the writers wrote the non-makeup/costume script.
I grew up watching the ' Munsters ' and (for me) they were awesome actors and comedians. I'm sure many of you agree with me. 😊 ❤️
Hollywood released dozens of great family shows that were run on prime time TV during the late 50's and thru the 60's. ...how far Hollywood has fallen.
Such attention to detail, too. The way Eddie covers his wolfmann doll's eyes!
Yeah, I agree, but there's one thing I could never figure out, if Lily is a vampire and Herman was made from various humans, how did they have a werewolf child, their daughter I can understand, she takes after her father's human doners, but Eddie? Unless one important fathering part of Herman was from a werewolf and his other fathering part was from a human, then that might explain it, that's the only thing that actually makes sense and explains it.
Well, Marilyn is their neice, not daughter, as for Eddie I always figured the werewolf genetics are recessive because Lily has younger brother named Lester who is a werewolf and even shows up in one episode.
I don't remember ever seeing this one back then as a child. Great to finally see Fred's real face. 😊
Its hard to believe the Munsters only lasted 2 seasons. Ten times the show the Adams family was.
It was the hours of makeup and that heavy padded suit that Fred Gwynne had to wear that was basically sucking the life out of him.
This was such a great show. So much fun. The actors played it straight, but everyone got it, and was in on the joke. Television gold.
Eddie’s reaction, including covering Woof-woof’s eyes was the best acting Butch Patrick ever did!
Love how even Marilyn is shocked 😂
Now he knows how Marilyn feels when they make remarks about her 'deformity'.
I figure she just takes after one of Herman's organ donors, the doner of the other organ must've been from a wolfman or werewolf judging by how Eddie turned out, at least they have one appealing kid, they must've been worried they would never have an appealing child until Eddie was born.
Marylin is not Lily and Hermans' kid. She's actually their niece.
Am I the only one who thinks that big poofy sleeping cap Lily wears in the beginning scene looks adorable?
At 68, we experienced the best TV programs of all time !!!
And not a single person was taken aside to give a personal opinion about someone else,,, and how such a thing became so popular continues to amaze me, because it is NOT interesting, it is the opposite of interesting, and hurts my brain just hearing it.
Some of them were, sure
as said by every generation ever (since TV was invented)
@@roberts5539Not my mother. She's always thought TV was drivel.
@@zacmumblethunder7466 well, no. Not every person in every generation.
0:48 when Eddie covers up Wolf-Wolfs eyes!
I think the thing most people miss in trying to capture the Herman Munster impressions id that Fred isn’t mugging. There’s class in all of the big expressions. He’s not mugging. He’s playing a character that happens to have big expressions.
Fred Gwynne was such a handsome man. Especially with those sleepy eyes, strong jaw, and straight nose.
Apparently, Herman & Grandpaw came from completely different entertainment backgrounds, but their styles gelled together perfectly in the Munsters.
Fred Gywn and Al Lewis had worked on Broadway together prior to The Munsters. They were good friends who knew how to play off one another and were specifically chosen for these roles.
Al Lewis also played one of the cops on Car 54 @@battlecross8540
@@battlecross8540They also both were in "Car 54, Where are You?" before "The Munsters."
they always had great chemistry
Ya gotta love this show, life was so simple back then
Yeah, white supremacy anti-black racism was on top. Now it's dying, along with your capitalism.
@@carlousmagus5387 💩🤡
Well, they pretended it was on TV. They weren't allowed to show reality.
@@John_Ridley good call. I saw a comic strip version of 'the Andy Griffiths show' once, (Drawn and Quarterly, I think) with a much darker truer take on the 'good ole days'.
I never realized just how much this guy resembles H.P. Lovecraft. A handsome Lovecraft.
If HP Lovecraft wasn’t a complete social failure and scaredy-cat and extreme xenophobe
@@sgtwhisker26 Well, yes, there's that.
They were all brilliant but most especially Fred. Nobody could have been Herman quite like Fred. Just perfect. And such a polar opposite to Gomez Addams so the shows wouldn't seem too alike.
@Robert08010... Fred Gwynne was a Versatile actor he played loveable Herman Munster perfectly another actor that come to mind who could have played the part of Herman Munster is Richard Kiel he played a Monster/Frankenstein on a 1967 episode of the Monkees title "I Was a Teenage Monster" worth checking out.
Lily was smoking hot 😂
Herman came back as Andy from the American Office 😂😂
I didn’t know how handsome Fred was 😮
They missed an opportunity to show that grandpa had no reflection!
I love this show! Never gets old.
Fred in the suit and tie looks like the portrait of "Uncle Zander", from Charles Addams original New Yorker cartoons. Morticia is showing a visitor the family portraits and points out handsome, well dressed, respectable looking Zander as "The black sheep of the family."
I was reading my Addams collection book just yesterday and I saw that exact comic. Serendipitous to say the least.
Hmmmmmm.......🤔🤔🤔
Herman looks like he gives sound advice on where to bury pets.
If only it happened to everybody in the family and not just Herman. Could’ve given us a chance to see everybody out of their make up.
If that happened Marilyn would have been in makeup she was the only normal looking one in the group without makeup.
Definitely the funniest episode it was so clever and if you freeze frame it when Grandpa shows Herman the blueprints of how he was made in Germany that's great you see for just one second a blueprint of the Frankenstein Monster you have to freeze the frame at that moment it's really good.
What Season/Episode is this from?
I grew up with this show and the Adams Family they were fantastic
Too bad they could not have a crossover episode with the two shows that would have been great
“Hello sir” would be devastating to every man.
Love the way he can cantors his face in that Rubbery way!
Fred Gwynne a national treasure.
Such an incredible expressive actor!
This has always been my favorite episode. 😂😂😂
Herman's 👖 should have fallen down, lol. He was a good-looking man. It's such a good thing we have these jewels to watch. I heard Rob Zombies Munsters movie wasn't very good. It would be so hard to match the chemistry ⚗️ that all these actors had, so i don't think we will ever see a worthy remake. Such good childhood memories when i watch this.
I have a similar reaction every time I see a mirror!
Boy, we sure did enjoy rank silliness back in the day. They were competing with The Addams Family - remember??
Two of my favorites!
Marilyn's response is hilarious!
Oh my, its Judge Chamberlain Haller from My Cousin Vinney.
I grew up watching The Munsters and this episode gave me a crush on Fred Gwynne
I've been watching the Munsters since the 1970s
The Munsters and The Beverley Hillbillies were great shows even for a UK audience
Still one of the best sit coms ever to have exploited the airwaves. 👻🧟♂️🧛🏻♂️
What a wonderful actor he was.
Oh no! It turned him into a Fred!
Love the way Eddie covers his dolls eyes
Dang he was a good looking guy. I wouldn't have guessed.
Gwynne is such a yewt here. Very yewtful.
Brilliantly written and acted episode with an especially funny appearance by Paul Lynde.
I can’t believe how young he looks in This scene
He was a good looking man without the makeup
This goes to show how little the makeup and prosthetics have to do with Fred's portrayal of Herman.
5:25 that reaction was hilarious shocking but it was priceless
Best comedy ❤
I had forgotten how handsome Mr. Gwynne was as a young man
He's less terrifying as Herman than he is as the caretaker of a pet semetary.
Love this show so much ❤
Herman looks like his character, Francis Muldoon.
Fred Gwynne is the equivalent of what Jim Carrey later became with his ability to distort his face to make so many expressions. He's like a living caricature. It's amazing how he can change so many features so quickly, and that also includes the art of knowing how to move his eyes and lips to follow each expression to enhance it even more.
Herman looks like he writes childrens books.
This is one of my favorite episodes ❤.
Loved The Munsters. So much more funnier than The Addams Family. But I cant recall seeing this one on Australian TV.
I wish they wrote better dialog for Marilyn, would have been cool if she was like "YOU LOOK LIKE ME NOW UNCLE HERMAN!"
I love this show!
this was such a great show, this and Beverley hillbillies are my favorite old TV shows.
This is my favourite episode 😂
It's funny how in real life Grandpa was only 3 years older than him. They were both in their 40s at the time.
My wife of 42 years is from Los Angeles a long time ago she dated Eddie Munster
He must have loved this episode. The one week he didn't have to wear 19 pounds of makup.
Humor. The Irony of it. 😳
So adorable…love this!
With his new looks,Herman went on to law school, became a lawyer and eventually a judge.
It was good to see Fred play his real self.
Fred is just a natural for this part…
Fred Gwynne was way underrated. He was so incredible in his role as Hermann Monster that is typecast him on the spot. THis is a double edge sword.
On one side it shows how talented you are, but on the other side, people think you can only do that type or characters.
Love this show enjoyed very much as a kid from the UK
Little known fact: Fred Gwynne actually was the first to summit Mt. Everest with Tenzing Norgay in 1953
Im sure this entire episode shoot was a massive reprieve for him after reading about how terrible it was to be in all that make up and prosthetics.
This was the easiest day Fred Gwynn ever had playing on The Munsters. The Herman suit he had to wear all day was very hot and cumbersome. After he complained, they put air hoses into it, but they didn't help. So they shot little jets of cold water through it and they just made the heat and humidity worse, particularly during outdoor filming.
He quit over the unbearable conditions, and Al Lewis, a longtime labor activist, quit in solidarity with him, ending any hopes of keeping the show going.
Hotel Transylvania did the same thing.
The lightning made him look normal wow😂😅
Interesting being struck by lightning again brought him back to life.
Hey, that’s Francis Muldoon!
They are still searching for Car 54.
Many people still go through this same treatment by their family/friends
Absolutely Hilarious 😆
Loved this asa kid ❤❤❤❤
Wow. He almost looks like a Yoot.
he looks like a driver... of a car... car 54, maybe. I remember this episode.
My favorite show
Seriously and profoundly silly. But fun.
So goodlooking
