    These stories remind me of my grandmother. She was married at 15 in 1907 and moved into a 12x12 sod house in western Nebraska. She could start a fire on SUnday morning and not use a match again until the following SUnday when she cleaned the week's ashes before SUnday Breakfast. SHe took elk and deer with a single shot from an old worn 30-30 with iron sights until she was 84. SHe new wild edibles and medicinal plants. ANimals, hunting...SHe spilt her own stove-wood and cooked on her old iron stove until well into her 70s even though they could afford a modern gas stove at the time. She always said "Once you lose your ways, you have lost your way". Many "modern" people have lost their way because the old ways were never passed on or the ever increasing desire for modern things made old ways too unproductive. I have always felt that I must not really be here and now. It must be a dream because my heart sings when I see movies like this

    Since many years i collect birch sap in spring. I tried to make sirup out of it, but it never really worked. It tasted bad, bit burned and like if it would have gone bad.
    So, i still drink it fresh and put some liters into the freezer, but watching this movie i got curious to try again.
    This movie made me curious to try once more - and spring is coming slow by slow.

    When something is gained other things are surely lost. I would not presume to pass judgement on whether or not the price of progress is too high. But is important, it is essential that we document that which is lost, so that one day we might know the true cost.

      First Nations people are the first conservationists. Josh when u slash and cut nothing remains for the following year. Mother Earth provides and one should always treat it with respect. “Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.”- Cree Indian Proverb.

      @Mary Kann; Natives don't damage what they live off of, only some white man/woman or other races would! Birch sap is for syrup or you can just drink it!

    • @waslias
      @waslias 4 года назад +4

      It doesn't damage the tree, if you do it the right way. There is nothing wrong with "using" nature, if you do it respectfully. You have to live of something, and I think you protect what you live from (usually). I find it beautiful and rewarding, to study and appreciate your surrounding nature, and carefully make use of it, with measure, with love, try to fit in, like animals do.
