@Charles Ottoman march we start to get sap best is when -10 at night and warm up in day to plus 10 but its gona be different in different areas of Canada you can tap white birch yellow birch sugar maple and red maple its 40 to 1 so it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup
I loved listening to this. The fathers tone of voice, his beautiful thoughts and words touched my heart , an honor to be gifted. All of this sharing of the "Old Way" is rich with meaning. Thank you for the one who knew the value in telling the truth.
These stories remind me of my grandmother. She was married at 15 in 1907 and moved into a 12x12 sod house in western Nebraska. She could start a fire on SUnday morning and not use a match again until the following SUnday when she cleaned the week's ashes before SUnday Breakfast. SHe took elk and deer with a single shot from an old worn 30-30 with iron sights until she was 84. SHe new wild edibles and medicinal plants. ANimals, hunting...SHe spilt her own stove-wood and cooked on her old iron stove until well into her 70s even though they could afford a modern gas stove at the time. She always said "Once you lose your ways, you have lost your way". Many "modern" people have lost their way because the old ways were never passed on or the ever increasing desire for modern things made old ways too unproductive. I have always felt that I must not really be here and now. It must be a dream because my heart sings when I see movies like this
Since many years i collect birch sap in spring. I tried to make sirup out of it, but it never really worked. It tasted bad, bit burned and like if it would have gone bad. So, i still drink it fresh and put some liters into the freezer, but watching this movie i got curious to try again. This movie made me curious to try once more - and spring is coming slow by slow.
When something is gained other things are surely lost. I would not presume to pass judgement on whether or not the price of progress is too high. But is important, it is essential that we document that which is lost, so that one day we might know the true cost.
There is nothing wrong with birch . It is good wood if you know how to use it .But many people dont know how to use it correctly .It is spring elixir known by many .But there is still fools complaining if they dont know ...
No josh, when they gather no more they close the gash with mud. It will heel under the mud an stop the leak. I do it that way myself and use the same trees for decades.
Josh has no idea what he is saying! His mind is hateful because he does not understand our old ways. We milked the birch and the maple trees as I remember in the 60’s and boy those were the best years. There was a traditional way of life that was simple but fulfilling. Miss those days.
First Nations people are the first conservationists. Josh when u slash and cut nothing remains for the following year. @Mary Kann; Natives don't damage what they live off of, only some white man/woman or other races would! Birch sap is for syrup or you can just drink it!
It doesn't damage the tree, if you do it the right way. There is nothing wrong with "using" nature, if you do it respectfully. You have to live of something, and I think you protect what you live from (usually). I find it beautiful and rewarding, to study and appreciate your surrounding nature, and carefully make use of it, with measure, with love, try to fit in, like animals do.
I tapped a birch tree today. Admittedly I drilled a hole because I read that it heals itself ok in no time at all. Next time il do it different It's also year of the tree Bless all trees

Very moving. We have lost this world to power and greed.
Agreed
That's dumb and vague
We gave it up for technology . And we'll never give that up now. We're controlled by our own greed.
Bless you and your people love to live in a place. Of peaceful out doors

Не правильно! Срубить березу ради 8-10 литров сока, там надреза хватит, чтобы 5 литров собрать за ночь и дерево целое.
За такую подрубку руки им отрубить
Surprisingly this is almost no different from the Russian village of the same time
Boozhoo, Great video
Where all my birches at?
🙏👍🇺🇸
Im leaving this world to the woods. Im all alone though. If anyone in WA state like to live the old way message me
And then the tree bleeds out because they gashed th hello out of the birch.

Разве можно так деревья подрубать!?
Можно, они потом землей эти порезы замазывают, и у дерева раны зарастают. Во все времена так делали люди в тайге и делают сейчас.
Canada really isn’t what it used to be...
no where is what it used to be.
Can someone tell me the song name, at the beginning of the video?
Amazing! I wanted to tap a birch, but... Is it too late now?
What do you do with the tap, just for information. I want to try it.
