We are in northern canada, been beekeeping over 10 years and never lost a hive - until this year. We lost all 26 in our one yard. I am so sad. 😭 They were full of stores and wrapped up warm with ventilation.

I know I relied very heavily on luck my first year. I got my bees in July with no knowledge, no experience, and not knowing my local beekeeping community. Fortunately they made it through our first winter together in spite of my putting winter patties all over their hive and breaking up the cluster because I was clueless about what bees do in the winter. Devoted last year to learning and gaining experience, and we made it through a second winter this time with much better management. You have been a big part of that journey, David. Thank you for all the work you do to help us!

David, the sun finally came out, bees out foraging, inspected the hive all the way down to the bottom screen board, it was a good 50% covered with dead bees and some food from the WBK boards. Clean it, put the hive back together noticing new eggs in all stages, did not see the queen but I know she is in there. I am lucky to have this hive make it through the winter. THANKS TO YOU AND SHARED KNOWLEDGE PLUS NEVER GIVING UP.

David, I have spent many hours reviewing your videos and then taking your Ultimate Bee Course. Between both I have learned in a few months what might take a few years to experience. I now have the book knowledge to use where my experience is lacking. Over time the experience will prove your words of wisdom to be correct without question. Not everyone agrees with your ideas and wisdom but that's the beauty of diversity. Take something from everyone and build your own collection. Keep what works for my hives and discard that which doesn't. I like your live podcasts on Thursday nights and have been involved in a few of them as well. I am a paid subscriber and support your efforts financially. Keep up the good work David as I know it takes time and effort to produce such great videos for us all to learn from. Your efforts don't go unnoticed sir.

I live in a condo so my bees live at my mom's and she has so much fun helping me the first year, she ordered herself some nucs the second year...
We had both hives die the first spring (they made it through the winter, but moisture issues got them in early spring), the next year we had 6 hives from 3 nucs, two weaker hives got robbed out in fall and 4 hives made it through till the next spring, we did some splits, got some queens in, caught 3 swarms, got up to 9 hives, and went into winter with 3 hives (2 rob-outs of failing hives, and a couple absconds and maybe we overtreated with apivar (I do wish they had instructions that applied to mediums as well as deeps), as we had more absconds and some severe declines in populations by the time we took the strips out), two of which were not looking good, small populations... and only one's still alive now... We DID test, we did treat... we had our biggest most productive hive swarm and successfully re-queen itself, we had some hives that just weren't very productive... but we're learning what we did wrong so hopefully we at least don't make the same mistakes again. We now know what to look for when we should be replacing queens (crappy brood patterns or not enough eggs but then we literally found the queen), and when we went in this spring to start cleaning the deadouts out for use this season, we found two hives where we could see that they'd just frozen to death, and in two cases we found the queen in the dead cluster not much bigger than a tennis ball... The rob-outs were the only ones with no honey, the absconds and freezes left plenty of honey so we're good for resources...
I think when we get our nucs in May, when we set them up in their new hives we're going to stick some leftover full honey frames in the middle where they're going to want to put brood so they use or at least relocate the honey so they can clean out the honey frames... we don' want to just spin out the honey because those frames have been treated with Apivar and I don't want that in my extractor and we don't know what to do with it otherwise. We also want to try making some resource hive nucleus colonies if things are going well.
We are slowly adding to our list of "if this, then that" as we make mistakes and learn from them, and get more equipment (bee vac and spare homes for swarms, and nucleus hives) ... not everything's come up in all the videos we've watched and a few mistakes we've had to make ourselves (ie, just because you see the queen doesn't mean your hive is queen-right).

That was us. This will be our 5th season. Started in 2020 and whether we built up from 4 to 10 hives going into winter, we did the same things and all but one died, so we bought new. That happened 3 years in a row. Now we’ve changed our game and are 6 of 8 this year also live in central Illinois.

Just installed multiple packages in my first bee hives. This helped me as I had to release a queen from a cage that the bees did not release after 7 days now I wait 7 more days to check on the hive.
My question is I released multiple hives at once and opening them up after 7 days I need to even out the rest of the hives as they all seemed to like the one queen I had to release manually any thoughts?

My philosophy is knowledge and experience and some luck.
Which is why I have been learning as much as I can before I got our bees, including classes. And have been making getting the proper equipment needed and making plans on what to do and when to do it. And plans for the the good and bad events that could happen. Making things for the amount of risk as possible.
We get our first two NUCs in a few weeks. I am excited!

Unrelated to this video but I wanted to share this with you. The video you made about finding the queen in a defensive hive helped me greatly!! I took one deep away from the hive to find the queen. They were much calmer and I was able to find her. She has been removed and now I will attempt introducing a caged queen to see if this helps their defensiveness. Thank you for all your hard work and help!! 🙏🏼🙂

you need a shovel to dig a hole, you need a hook to catch a fish, and you better make sure you have a proper swarm box lol.
hey david, been watching a couple of your videos for a couple months now, and just caught my first swarms this year, one with the of my dad, the other 3 because i told my dad to split his hives which he refused to do and i caught his swarms.
i want to add as someone who is extremely passionate about ecology and replicating patterns i see in nature. just like how bees help plants Symbiotically, we as humans need to take on a new culture for the ecosystems we stewart. a basic hypothesis is if we help weed out invasive grasses, and propogate pollinator friendly species it is a basic function of more food for bees. im currently taking a break from a mass weeding on my property where im artificially sellecting all plant species to encourage an explosion of natural recources.
i dont stop there either david, as an individual i artificially predate on species even when im off of my property, helping lazy landscapers, with my botanical knowledge.
i would love to see a research video by you about flowers and just how important the ecology can BEE. if you follow through ill look forward to reading what you cite.
    thanks.
