I first learned about VECTOR DISPLACEMENT MAPS from this video. I am very interested in this new technology because I have always worked with nomalmap!
Hey, normal map is fine for small objects or games, but the big and detailed stuff it's better to have displacement + normal map. The displacement will ad the most details it can(but don't overdo do it because it subdivided the geometry during tender) , but the last fine details can best be added with normal maps
@@phoerens Thank you for teaching me. I didn't study 3D much time. If I had made a character in this video, I would have made all those bumps into polygons. This is a very interesting way. And it seems very difficult...
This is amazing to be honest, your workflow is sooooo superrrrrrr!!!!! It's my humble request that you kindly show a step by step tutorial on how to you use these apps to achieve your final result
@@phoerens Yeah, a slower video or a breakdown of a single app like maya, how you use it to model along with explanations of your step by step process and then a slower video or a breakdown on how you texture in substance painter and maya, and the rest of the apps you use.( What I'm talking about is basically a *tutorial*, explaining how to create a creature and texture it using the 3d apps you use)
Great how you directly address two big "gotcha" catch points that is easily to get hung up on by the first half the the video, switching the base model and switching UV sets. Thanks.
clicked on. Very detailed and to the point, thank you so much for tNice tutorials! I subscribed and I look forward to watcNice tutorialng and learning more about
You did good on your character! I love how we can shape these cool creatures from simple shapes. Mainly why I love 3D modeling. Also, question. Just curious, what kind of material did you use for your creature in maya?
thanks ! Yes sometimes for simple shapes it's better to just model it because in Zbrush you can often go too quickly into the details and the result won't be smooth.. And I used a redshift standard material. Basically for every render engine you use the standard material, it's the one that can handle the most things (sss, specular, refraction..)
@@phoerens So you did the materials in zbrush? Or in maya? I'm asking because I'm having trouble baking my maps from my highpoly mesh to my lowpoly mesh
@@sierracook3343 if you watch the video until the end you can see that I made the maps in substance painter, and plugged them into a redshift material in Maya. In zbrush i just made the highpoly mesh
@@phoerens Yeah I noticed. I've never done it that way before. I actually tried doing the high poly in mudbox. But it wasn't perfect when I tried exporting the high poly textures.
Dude,Your work is stunning!!! Just wonder how you get the facial rigging thing work without eyes...as far as I know, adv face rig won't work without eyeballs...
thanks ! I didn't really did a rig on my face. I added myself some bones for the tongue, but as you saw i modeled my character with it's mout open so his pose was pretty much done
vector displacement is great in that you don't have to manually retopologize his scales. You can have a simple model that you apply a scale map to, but in the video you no longer show how you got the scales into the substance painter. They appear to be there as real geometry, which doesn't make sense.
Yeah I didn't show that, sorry. I actually just took the second or third subdivision from zbrush and used that as my substance painter model. That allowed me to still have the good uv's, and keep a preview of the displaced mesh Because if I textured with the flat mesh I couldn't know where to paint my textures on the extruded parts 😅
Cool artwork, sir!! May I ask if you have tutorials for Substance Painter? I have a model but I don't know how to texture it. I want to learn how to texture a model just like how you are doing. Im a fan 🙂.
Hey, not yet but soon 👍. This weekend I'll post a tutorial about the modeling and sculpting process between Maya & Zbrush, and the weekend after that one I'll release a tutorial about the whole substance painter process and rendering it
thanks a lot^^ Uhm hard to say, I think 2 to 3 hours for the modeling in maya, 1 to 2 in zbrush, same in painter. However I struggled a lot with setting up the vector displacement, I had never used it before so I spent a whole afternoon trying to make it work because at first it didn't lol
@@phoerens So basically .. it should take 1 to 2 days to finish 3D art piece .. or does it depend on the project ? Like .. how do you know that you're taking enough time or too long to finish an art piece ?
@@bara_abudhair it really depends, this one took me a day, but I made other projects that took me weeks or even a month And it's quite simpel, if you want to show it on artstation, make good renders of it and show it on your portfolio, you should spend more time on it. The ones I make for this channel are not over detailed because I want to make one every week, so I basically have the weekend to make one and if I don't finish I work on it in the evening during the week But basically, it's finished when you're satisfied with it that's all that matters
